If you want a free-to-play battle royale, consider Fortnite; for cartoon-styled platform fighting, try Brawlhalla. Each changes the combat format, so the right pick depends on what you like most about Ninjala.

These are alternatives by mood and audience, not one-to-one replacements for Ninjala. The game’s official site describes it as “Ninja Gum Battle Action” and lists Nintendo Switch as its platform, with one to eight players overall and two to eight online; the page does not state the year for that player-count specification. Choose by what you like about Ninjala
If you want colorful team action on Switch: Splatoon 3
Splatoon 3 is the most natural pick if bright visuals and team-based online play matter more to you than matching Ninjala’s exact fighting style. Its core combat is ink-based shooting, so expect a different feel from close-range arena action. Nintendo’s official site says online features require a Nintendo Account and a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo
If you want battle royale: Fortnite
Choose Fortnite if the free-for-all battle royale side of Ninjala is what you want to keep. The 2026 GamesRadar+ guide describes Fortnite as a colorful, cross-platform battle royale and a free Switch option. Its large-scale shooter format is a substantial change from Ninjala’s close-combat battles. The guide does not establish current availability in every region or account requirements, so check those for your location. GamesRadar+

If you want a cartoon fighter: Brawlhalla
Brawlhalla is a farther-reaching alternative if you want a colorful, free fighting game more than a similar arena format. The same 2026 guide lists it among free Switch games, but its platform-fighting format differs from Ninjala. Check regional availability and account requirements before playing. GamesRadar+
Why Splatoon 3 looks similar but plays differently
The resemblance in color and style can make Splatoon seem like an obvious match, but the combat distinction matters. In a 2020 interview, GungHo CEO Kazuki Morishita said, “Splatoon’s more a shooting game, and this is more close combat – it is team battles with 4 players on each side, but there’s also battle royale which is a free-for-all.” He also said that players often found Ninjala was not actually like Splatoon after trying it. Those launch-period remarks describe the intended design difference; they are not evidence about current modes or service health. Nintendo Life’s 2020 interview

Know the cost and online-access trade-off
Ninjala’s download version is free-to-play, and GungHo says a Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required for online play. The game offers additional content and in-app purchases; its official FAQ says Story Packs can be bought separately for single-player story content, and avatar items change appearance rather than battle performance. Official site · Official FAQ
Do not assume that another free-to-play game uses the same online-access terms. Nintendo specifies that Splatoon 3 online features require Switch Online, while the cited 2026 guide describes Fortnite and Brawlhalla as free options but does not settle their current regional availability or account requirements. What to expect from Ninjala’s own multiplayer
If you are comparing alternatives because you want a particular kind of match, Ninjala itself supports both team battles and battle royale. Its official manual says standard battles take place over the internet, with customizable rules, matching methods and stages; it also describes room battles with friends and a visual lobby. The official site lists one to eight players overall and two to eight online, but does not date that player-count specification. Official multiplayer manual · Official site
No comparable current player-population figures are established for these alternatives here, so there is no reliable basis to rank them by active players, queue times or regional matchmaking health.
