Use a Rune when its matching storage has room and you have a worthwhile way to spend the refill. A Rune of Gold, Rune of Elixir, or Rune of Dark Elixir fills that resource’s Home Village storage; it does not buy an upgrade or finish its timer. Check your storage, choose a ready purchase, then activate the Rune.
What a Rune does—and what it does not do
Supercell says Runes completely fill their matching resource storages. A Rune of Gold fills Gold storage, a Rune of Elixir fills Elixir storage, and a Rune of Dark Elixir fills Dark Elixir storage. Runes for Builder Base resources fill Builder Base storages instead. Supercell Support’s Magic Items & The Trader guide also states: “You can’t use a Rune if the respective Storages are full.”

A Rune is a refill, not an upgrade-completion item. You still need to select and pay for an eligible upgrade or other purchase, and its timer remains unless you use a different item that affects completion. Supercell lists Books and Hammers separately among Magic Items because they have different effects.
Before you activate a Rune
- Identify the resource and village. Match the Rune to the storage and progression plan you intend to fund. Home Village and Builder Base resources are separate.
- Check storage capacity. If the matching storage is full, spend some of that resource first; Supercell says the Rune cannot be used while that storage is full.
- Choose a useful purchase in advance. Have an eligible upgrade, building, defense, wall, or other resource expense ready so the refill has a purpose.
- Check your actual bottleneck. If the upgrade you most want is blocked by a different resource, a Rune for the resource you already have plenty of may not help much.
Storage capacity and upgrade costs depend on account progression, so there is no fixed amount or universal best time that applies to every player. The full-storage restriction is an official mechanic; matching a Rune to a ready upgrade and a current bottleneck is practical planning based on that mechanic.

How to prioritize each Rune

Choose upgrades around how you play
There is no official universal troop, hero, or defense upgrade order tied to Rune use. A reviewed independent upgrade guide advises prioritizing troops and spells used by your main army, keeping heroes broadly caught up, and weighing defenses more heavily for war than for farming or pushing. Treat that as a flexible framework, not a rule: your army, hero levels, goals, and play frequency affect which upgrade is worthwhile.
For a resource choice, ask which upgrade would make a meaningful difference to your play and whether it is actually affordable with the Rune’s resource. If your army upgrades consume Elixir but your immediate goal is a defense for war, Gold may be the more useful choice—provided there is a ready Gold expense and storage room.

When farming or another reward may be the better option
Runes are convenient, but they are not the only way to obtain resources. Supercell’s loot guidance describes earning Gold, Elixir, and Dark Elixir through attacks, with loot limited and partly dependent on the opponent’s Town Hall. Star Bonus rewards can also include these resources. Compare those options against your current needs without assuming a Rune has a fixed numeric or gem value.
If a Rune is offered as a reward choice, decide based on your upgrade plan and storage situation rather than assuming one resource is always best. In its February 16, 2026 announcement, the Clash of Clans team described Gold Pass Choice Nodes that include Rune of Gold versus Rune of Elixir, with rewards scaling to Town Hall and Builder Hall levels at season start. The announcement describes aligning choices with “your current Town Hall level & upgrade plans”; check the live season track because reward contents can change.

Common Rune-spending mistakes
- Trying to use a Rune on full storage: spend some of the matching resource first; the game does not allow activation while that storage is full.
- Activating before choosing what it funds: the Rune only refills storage. It does not complete the upgrade or remove its timer.
- Assuming every Rune is equally useful: the resource you need depends on your ready upgrades, storage room, and current bottleneck.
- Calling a Rune automatically better than farming: attacks and Star Bonuses are also resource sources, though loot is limited and varies in part with the opponent’s Town Hall.
- Copying a rigid upgrade order: a sequence designed around someone else’s army, hero levels, or play frequency may not suit your account.
- Assuming reward tracks stay fixed: seasonal rewards and choices can change, so consult the current in-game track before planning around a particular Rune.
