Yes—you can run a private, persistent server for many of 2026’s most popular survival, sandbox and multiplayer games. The safest choices are games with an official dedicated-server package or well-established standalone tooling: Valheim, Palworld, ARK: Survival Evolved, ARK: Survival Ascended, and Source-engine games are documented examples. Minecraft, Rust, Terraria, Project Zomboid, V Rising and Satisfactory are also common candidates, but you should verify the exact edition, server branch, mod loader and current requirements before installing.
Godlike.Host hosts servers for Minecraft and more than 40 other games, with free DDoS protection and 24/7 support.
Self-hosting gives you control over saves, mods, access rules and when the world stays online. It also makes you responsible for the machine, networking, updates, backups and security. This guide shows which games are realistic to host, how their requirements differ, and when a home server, VPS or managed host makes the most sense.

Which games support self-hosting in 2026?
A game is a strong self-hosting candidate when its developer publishes dedicated-server software, SteamCMD files or clear standalone-server instructions. The following groups have the clearest evidence or the strongest current ecosystem.
Games with first-party dedicated-server documentation
| Game or group | What is documented | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Valheim | Steam installation, persistent worlds, router configuration, ports 2456–2457, Linux dependencies and a Docker fallback when the required GLIBC version is unavailable. | Use the current Iron Gate instructions for the server build you install. |
| Palworld | Dedicated-server requirements and an official Docker image/example from Pocketpair. | CPU, memory and operating-system requirements are version-sensitive; check Palworld’s current requirements page. |
| ARK: Survival Evolved | Dedicated-server app IDs, 64-bit requirements, supported Windows versions and Linux startup examples. | Memory use changes by map and configuration. |
| ARK: Survival Ascended | Dedicated-server tooling and platform-specific startup information are documented alongside the ARK server ecosystem. | Confirm the current branch, map and platform before choosing hardware. |
| Source-engine games | Steam’s setup documentation covers Half-Life 2: Deathmatch, Counter-Strike: Source and Day of Defeat: Source. | The documented default is UDP port 27015 and 1–32 players; individual games can impose additional settings. |
Additional 2026 candidates
Current 2026 roundups commonly include Minecraft, Rust, Terraria, Project Zomboid, V Rising and Satisfactory, in addition to Valheim, Palworld and ARK. Treat that list as a starting point rather than a guarantee that every edition is interchangeable. Java and Bedrock editions of Minecraft, for example, use different server software; a modded Project Zomboid or V Rising installation can require a different loader and update process than an unmodified server.

What makes one game easier to host than another?
Player count alone does not determine difficulty. Compare the following operational factors before you commit to a machine or hosting plan.
Persistence and uptime
A dedicated process can keep a world available when the owner is not playing. Iron Gate describes Valheim’s dedicated server as “a great way to provide a persistent world in which you and your friends can play anytime.” A home server only delivers that benefit while the computer, power and internet connection remain available.

Requirements are game-specific. ARK’s memory use varies by map; the ARK Official Community Wiki gives a current Valguero example of 3–4 GiB. That figure is not a universal ARK minimum and should not be applied to another map or game. Palworld publishes its own versioned requirements, while no authoritative source establishes one universal 2026 hardware minimum for all self-hosted games.

Storage growth and backups
Persistent worlds accumulate save files, logs, maps and mod content. Plan for more disk space than the initial download requires, and keep backups on a different physical device or location. A backup that lives only on the server will not help after disk failure, ransomware or an accidental deletion.
Mods and configuration
Mods can change memory use, startup arguments and update timing. Record the mod list and versions, keep configuration files with your backup set, and test updates on a copy of the world before applying them to the live instance.
Networking complexity
Each game can use a different protocol and port range. Valheim documents ports 2456–2457; Source’s Steam setup uses UDP 27015 by default. Opening the wrong port, or forwarding a port to the wrong internal address, makes an otherwise healthy server unreachable.

Game-by-game hosting notes
Valheim
Valheim is one of the clearest home-server choices because its official guide covers installation through Steam, router configuration and Linux operation. Forward the documented 2456–2457 range to the server’s local address, allow the same traffic through the host firewall, and keep the world files in a directory included in your backup schedule.
Linux hosts need the libraries specified by Iron Gate. If the operating system cannot meet the required GLIBC level, the guide provides Docker as a fallback. That approach isolates the server’s dependencies, but it adds container administration and its own update and backup considerations.
Palworld
Pocketpair publishes dedicated-server requirements and an official Docker image/example. Because Palworld’s requirements change with versions, use the game’s current requirements page for the final CPU, memory and operating-system decision rather than copying a specification from an older guide. Verify that the server branch and client build match after every major update.

ARK: Survival Evolved and ARK: Survival Ascended
ARK servers are flexible but comparatively demanding to maintain. The ARK Official Community Wiki documents app IDs, 64-bit requirements, supported Windows versions and Linux startup examples. Map choice matters: the documented 3–4 GiB Valguero example demonstrates why a single blanket RAM number is misleading. Leave headroom for players, mods and world activity, and check the current map-specific guidance before deployment.

Steam identifies Half-Life 2: Deathmatch, Counter-Strike: Source and Day of Defeat: Source as examples of Source dedicated servers. Its setup flow lets you choose Internet or LAN play, uses UDP 27015 by default and documents a capacity range of 1–32 players. Source servers are often lighter than large survival worlds, but you still need to keep the server files and client version aligned.
Minecraft, Rust, Terraria, Project Zomboid, V Rising and Satisfactory
These games are widely cited as self-hosting candidates in 2026. Their practical requirements depend on edition, branch, player count, mods and world size. Before buying hardware, locate the current official server download or SteamCMD instructions for the exact version you intend to run. Confirm whether the game expects Java, a native binary, a container image or a platform-specific tool.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
How to set up a dedicated server
- Choose the exact edition and branch. Write down the game version, platform, map and mod loader. Do not assume a server for one edition can accept clients from another.
- Install the official server package. Use the publisher’s dedicated-server download or SteamCMD distribution where applicable. Steam’s standalone-server FAQ states: “All Steam game servers now use SteamCMD to download and update game server files.”
- Check resources and dependencies. Confirm CPU, RAM, storage, 64-bit support, operating-system version and required libraries. For Valheim on Linux, check the documented dependencies; for Palworld, use Pocketpair’s current versioned table; for ARK, account for the selected map.
- Create a service account and data directory. Run the server without unnecessary administrator privileges, keep saves and configuration in a known directory, and separate live data from downloaded installers.
- Configure the server. Set the world name, password or access list, administrator credentials, player limit, save interval and mods through the game’s documented configuration files or startup arguments.
- Open only the required firewall ports. Allow the documented protocol and port for the selected game. Valheim’s range is 2456–2457; Source’s default is UDP 27015. These values are examples, not universal settings.
- Forward the router port if hosting at home. Give the server a stable local IP, forward the game’s port from the router to that address, and check whether your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT. If inbound connections are unavailable, a home port-forward will not work without another networking solution.
- Start and test locally. Join from the same network first, inspect the console for errors, confirm that saves are written, and test a clean shutdown and restart.
- Test from outside your network. Have a trusted player connect over the internet. Check latency, authentication, port reachability and whether the advertised server name appears correctly.
- Automate maintenance. Schedule backups, log rotation, restart windows and update checks. Test restoring a world on a separate directory before relying on the backup.
Home server, VPS or managed hosting?
| Option | Best when | You handle |
|---|---|---|
| Home computer | You already own suitable hardware and want maximum control over saves, mods and access. | Electricity, cooling, router exposure, firewall, updates, backups and uptime. |
| VPS | You want an always-on machine without maintaining physical hardware, and the game runs within virtualized resources. | Operating-system administration, security, resource sizing, backups and game updates. |
| Managed game host | You prefer a control panel, preinstalled server software and outsourced uptime work. | Plan limits, supported games, mod compatibility, backups, locations, DDoS policy, cancellation and data export. |
A VPS sits between a home PC and a dedicated bare-metal machine: resources can be scaled for persistent worlds, but you still administer the operating system and game process. A managed host reduces routine operations and may provide preinstalled servers, backups, DDoS controls and multiple locations, but those features and player limits vary by provider and plan. Compare the live terms rather than relying on a generic 2026 roundup.
Security, updates and recovery
Reduce exposure
- Expose only the game port and administration interface you actually need.
- Use a strong, unique server password and separate administrator credentials.
- Keep the operating system, server binary, SteamCMD and mods patched.
- Do not run unrelated services on the same publicly reachable machine.
Use a real backup rotation
Keep multiple dated copies, including at least one copy away from the live machine. Back up world saves, server configuration, whitelist or ban files, mod manifests and startup scripts. A restore test proves that the files are usable; merely copying them does not.
Plan for updates
Stop the process cleanly, back up the world, update the server files, review configuration changes, then start and test before inviting everyone back. If a client update arrives first, keep players on the compatible version or provide a separate test instance.
Common failure branches
- Players cannot see the server: verify the process is listening, the local firewall rule, router forwarding and the correct public address. Check for carrier-grade NAT.
- Clients receive a version mismatch: update the server and clients to the same branch, or roll back using the game’s supported method.
- Linux startup fails: read the missing-library message, install the documented dependencies, or use the game’s supported container fallback where available.
- World saves disappear: stop the server, inspect the configured save path and permissions, then restore the newest verified backup to a separate test directory before replacing live data.
- Performance degrades as the world grows: inspect CPU, memory, disk I/O and logs; reduce expensive mods or simulation settings before simply increasing player slots.
A practical decision checklist
- Choose self-hosting if you want control, have reliable power and internet, and are willing to maintain the service.
- Choose a VPS if you need a remote always-on machine and can administer Linux or Windows.
- Choose managed hosting if predictable uptime and a control panel matter more than low operating cost and full system control.
- For any option, verify the game’s current server branch, ports, dependencies, player limits, mod support, backup tools and cancellation or data-export terms.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I host a dedicated server on a normal home PC?
Usually, yes, if the game supplies compatible server software and your PC, connection, router and power can keep it online. The required CPU, RAM and storage are game-specific, so there is no single universal 2026 minimum.
Do all self-hosted games use the same port?
No. Valheim documents ports 2456–2457, while Source’s Steam setup uses UDP 27015 by default. Always follow the selected game’s current networking instructions.
Is a VPS easier than hosting at home?
A VPS removes physical hardware and home-router maintenance, but you still manage the operating system, security, game updates and backups. A managed game host outsources more of that work.
