The right alternative depends on what you want to replace: Apple Arcade is the clearest dedicated mobile substitute on Apple devices, Google Play Pass fits Android households, and PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium is the closest console-catalog alternative to Xbox Game Pass. For cloud gaming, first decide whether you want a catalog included or to stream games you already own. If you already pay for Netflix, its games cost nothing extra; Steam purchases and Humble Choice are better fits if keeping games matters more than renting a rotating catalog.

Which subscription alternative fits what I play?
There is no single “Netflix of games.” Game Pass is the closest catalog-rental model for console and PC; Apple Arcade and Google Play Pass are purpose-built mobile catalogs; PlayStation Plus is Sony’s console equivalent; and GeForce NOW streams select games linked to stores you already use rather than supplying its own rental library.
If you mostly play on a phone or tablet
Choose Apple Arcade for an Apple household that values a curated shelf, family sharing, controller support, and no ads or in-app purchases. Choose Google Play Pass for Android breadth, particularly if access to non-game apps is useful alongside games. Netflix remains a sensible zero-extra-cost option for casual play if the household already pays for video, but it is not the strongest choice for a stable premium mobile catalog.

If you want a console catalog
PlayStation Plus Extra is the nearest alternative to Game Pass’s rotating catalog, with Premium adding classic games, trials, and cloud streaming. Nintendo Switch Online is a different, cheaper proposition: its strongest reasons to subscribe are online multiplayer and access to retro libraries, not a steady stream of new blockbuster releases.
If you want cloud play or games to keep
For included-catalog streaming, compare Xbox Cloud Gaming, PlayStation Plus Premium, and Amazon Luna. For streaming supported purchases from your existing PC-game accounts, compare GeForce NOW and Boosteroid. If you would rather own games outright, Steam sales or Humble Choice keys avoid the basic subscription trade-off: access to a rental catalog ends when your eligibility ends.
What does Game Pass cost in the United States, and what do the tiers include?
Xbox’s US monthly plans range from $9.99 to $22.99, and none has an annual plan. The right step down depends on whether you need cloud time, console multiplayer, day-one releases, or the included partner services—not simply on the number of games.
| Plan | US price | Catalog (Xbox figure) | Day-one access | Cloud hours/month | Notable extras |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | $9.99/month after $1 for 14 days | 50+ | No | 5 | Online console multiplayer; Rewards |
| Premium | $14.99/month after intro offer | 200+ | Xbox-published games within 12 months | 10 | 2x Rewards |
| Ultimate | $22.99/month after intro offer | 500+ | Yes, for select games; Call of Duty titles excluded | 15 | EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, 4x Rewards |
| PC Game Pass | $13.99/month after intro offer | 300+ PC games | Yes, with the same Call of Duty caveat | Not included | EA Play; 2x Rewards |
Xbox’s published day-one footnote says, “Select games. Excludes Call of Duty titles.” Microsoft lowered Ultimate from $29.99 to $22.99 per month and PC Game Pass from $16.49 to $13.99 on 21 April 2026, according to Xbox Wire as quoted by FutureTweets. Older pages showing the former rates are out of date. Ultimate costs $275.88 over 12 months at the current monthly rate, based on Microsoft’s US price; that is a recurring monthly bill, not a discounted annual SKU.
Should I step down from Ultimate?
Premium is the in-house step-down if you still want a substantial Xbox catalog and some cloud access. It has 10 monthly cloud hours and 200+ games, but does not include EA Play, Fortnite Crew, or Ubisoft+ Classics. Essential is aimed more at online play and a smaller included catalog than at replacing Ultimate’s new-release access.
PC Game Pass makes more sense than Ultimate when the player uses a PC and does not need console access or Xbox Cloud Gaming. It costs $13.99 monthly, includes 300+ PC games and EA Play, and includes day-one Xbox-published games subject to the Call of Duty exclusion. For future Call of Duty releases, Xbox has said access is planned about a year after launch rather than on day one.

Is Game Pass Ultimate worth $22.99?
It can be good value if you play several included releases, use its bundled services, or would otherwise buy multiple new games; it is poor value if you rarely launch the catalog or mainly play games you already own. The decision is about your likely purchases and play time, not the headline count of 500+ games.
Tech Insider’s model, using a $70 new-release price and official US subscription prices, puts Ultimate’s break-even point at four games a year. Hunter Vault’s 2026 illustration puts Ultimate at about $1.15 per hour if you play 20 hours in a month, but about $4.60 per hour at five hours. Those are calculations under stated assumptions, not a promise that a subscriber will find four games they want.
US consumer spending on game subscription services grew 20% in 2025, according to the Entertainment Software Association using Circana data, as cited by Hunter Vault. That growth does not make every subscription worthwhile for an individual. Hunter Vault’s rule of thumb is to review a subscription if you have launched fewer than two catalog games in 60 days. One practical approach is to subscribe for one to three months when a specific wave of games arrives, then cancel if the next wave does not justify another charge; three months of Ultimate at $22.99 totals $68.97.

What is the best mobile alternative to Netflix Games?
Apple Arcade is the strongest dedicated option for Apple devices; Google Play Pass is the broad Android alternative. If you already have Netflix, opening its Games row costs no extra and may be enough for occasional party, kids, or tie-in play.

Apple lists hundreds of games, playable online or offline across Apple devices. Its official description says, “No ads. No in-app purchases. No interruptions.” Apple also says, “Share your membership with up to five people.” The US prices reported by Hunter Vault in October 2026 and PCMag in July 2026 are $6.99 per month or $49.99 per year. Virtwave describes the catalog as roughly 200+ curated titles and says Arcade is also included in every Apple One tier.
Arcade is the better fit when the household already uses iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV and wants a relatively controlled library for short sessions or kids. Games can be played offline, and controller support is available through Apple’s Games app. Its trade-off is platform lock-in: it does not serve as one shared catalog across Android, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
Google Play Pass: breadth on Android
Virtwave counts more than 1,000 apps and games for Android phones, tablets, and Chromebooks. Play Pass removes ads and unlocks in-app purchases where participating developers have opted in; the treatment is not universal across every title. Family Library sharing supports up to six people.
A confirmed US dollar list price was not established in the October 2026 pricing details. European and UK roundups report €4.99 monthly or €29.99 yearly and £4.99 monthly, respectively, but those regional prices should not be converted into or presented as a US price.

When is staying with Netflix the sensible choice?
Netflix Games is included with every Netflix membership, including the ads tier; it cannot be purchased as a standalone games subscription. Netflix Help Center describes it as “Unlimited access to more than 80 exclusive mobile games. Included with your Netflix membership,” and says, “No ads. No extra fees. No in-app purchases.” Those are official mobile-catalog figures and terms. Independent trackers put the combined mobile-and-cloud selection at roughly 100 titles in late 2026, with estimates varying from about 100 to 120; treat “more than 80” as Netflix’s stated floor rather than an exact total for every type of play.
Netflix is most compelling when the household already pays for video and wants an occasional game without another bill. In 2026, the company also emphasized party and kids titles streamed through the Netflix TV app in supported countries, often using a phone as a controller. The TV selection is region- and device-limited; it is not the same as a broad console streaming service. Titles cited in What’s on Netflix’s June 2026 list include Unhinged, The Jackbox Party Essentials, Overcooked! All You Can Eat, WWE 2K25, LEGO Party!, and Tetris Time Warp. The list also includes Red Dead Redemption as a mobile release from December 2025.
There are signs the catalog should be treated as rotating rather than steadily expanding. What’s on Netflix reported that more than 50 games had been removed since December 2024, including a 20-plus-title removal in July 2025. It counted 15 new mobile releases in 2025 and two by 30 June 2026. Its estimate that Farming Simulator 23 passed 5.8 million downloads comes from Appmagic; that is an estimate, not a Netflix-reported player count.
What’s on Netflix reported Farming Simulator 23 leaving Netflix on 20 November 2026, with 19 November as its last play day. Shadow and Bone: Enter the Fold was scheduled to shut down on 9 November 2026. Those dates matter if a specific game is the reason to use the service: check the game’s own availability notice before planning around it.

The strategic direction has also changed. The Verge reported on 13 August 2026 that Netflix was shutting Night School Studio and Moonloot Games and focusing on four areas: kids, party, narrative, and mainstream games, with TV party play central. The Verge quoted Netflix spokesperson Chrissy Kelleher: “As we continue to prioritize these areas, we see an opportunity to be more focused in our execution, so we are making organizational changes to the business to match those priorities.” GameSpot reported from an internal Netflix memo that 3.5% of subscribers played games monthly, 10 percentage points below the company’s 2026 reach-and-engagement target; it also restated that fewer than 1% played Netflix games in 2022. These engagement figures explain why an included games row should not be mistaken for Netflix building the broadest dedicated gaming catalog.
Is PlayStation Plus a good Game Pass replacement?
PlayStation Plus Extra is the closest Sony-side catalog rental, and Premium is the tier to consider if classic games and streaming matter. Its annual plans lower the effective monthly cost substantially compared with paying month to month, while Game Pass has no annual SKU.
| Tier | US monthly | US 12-month | What it adds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | $10.99 | $79.99 | Monthly games, online multiplayer, discounts, cloud storage, Share Play |
| Extra | $16.99 | $134.99 | Essential benefits plus Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics |
| Premium | $19.99 | $159.99; $54.99 for three months | Extra benefits plus Classics Catalog, game trials, PS5 cloud streaming, Sony Pictures Catalog |
Prices are US figures compiled from operator pages in October 2026 by Hunter Vault, Tech Insider, and FutureTweets. The 12-month Extra price is about $11.25 per month effective and saves roughly $69 versus 12 monthly payments. Premium’s annual price is about $13.33 per month effective and saves roughly $80. Tech Insider’s model says Premium’s annual plan breaks even at three $70 games, under its stated new-release-price assumption.
For October 2026, examples on the official catalog included Mafia: The Old Country, Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, Cyberpunk 2077, Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut, God of War Ragnarök, Hogwarts Legacy, Silent Hill 2, and Horizon Forbidden West. Classics examples included Dino Crisis 2 and RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 Complete Edition. A catalog example is not a guarantee of permanent availability: Extra and Premium rotate titles, and Tech Insider reported Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 among 11 games leaving on 17 November 2026.

Cloudplay.now reported 4K at 60 fps and no published hour cap on 4 September 2026, compared with Xbox’s defined monthly cloud-hour allowances. This is a published service specification, not an independent latency or frame-rate comparison. Sony’s PS Plus footnote also says that from January 2026 PS4 games are added to the Game Catalog only intermittently, which matters if you expect regular PS4 additions.
Is Nintendo Switch Online cheaper than Game Pass?
Yes, especially if the main goal is online Switch play and classic Nintendo libraries rather than current blockbuster releases. The individual base plan is $19.99 for 12 months; the Expansion Pack costs more but adds additional retro systems and selected downloadable content.
| Plan | US price | What is included |
|---|---|---|
| Individual base | $3.99/month, $7.99/3 months, or $19.99/12 months | Online multiplayer, cloud saves, NES, SNES, and Game Boy libraries |
| Family base | $34.99/12 months, up to eight people | Base-plan benefits for a family group |
| Individual Expansion Pack | $49.99/12 months; no monthly Expansion Pack option | Base benefits plus GBA, N64, GameCube on Switch 2, Virtual Boy, Sega Genesis, and selected DLC |
| Family Expansion Pack | $79.99/12 months | Expansion Pack benefits for a family group |
There is a published-price disagreement about monthly billing for the base plan: Hunter Vault and PCMag list $3.99 per month, while FutureTweets describes the base plan as annual-only. The annual individual price of $19.99 and Expansion Pack annual price of $49.99 are consistent across the cited accounts. A PCMag line that calls the Expansion Pack $49.99 per month conflicts with Nintendo’s published $49.99 annual price and should not be used.
Nintendo’s October 2026 marketing, quoted by FutureTweets, says: “Looking for the best value? With a Family Membership, up to eight people can share a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, costing only about $10 per person per year.” The roughly $10 figure assumes eight people sharing the $79.99 annual family tier; it is not the individual price. Switch Online is a budget and family-retro pick, not a day-one AAA rental service.

For a PC-only rental catalog, PC Game Pass is the simple Microsoft option. For ownership, Steam purchases and Humble Choice keys offer a different value proposition: access to a purchased game can remain after a subscription ends.

Publisher subscriptions are narrower than a general catalog
EA Play costs $5.99 monthly or $39.99 yearly; EA Play Pro, on PC, costs $16.99 monthly or $119.99 yearly, according to Hunter Vault in October 2026. The basic tier offers a back catalog and 10-hour trials, while Pro is the day-one EA option. An Ultimate subscriber already gets EA Play, and PC Game Pass also includes EA Play, so a separate subscription would duplicate that benefit.
Ubisoft+ Classics is $7.99 monthly or $79.99 yearly, while Ubisoft+ Premium is $17.99 monthly or $179.99 yearly. Classics is bundled with Game Pass Ultimate and PS Plus Extra/Premium; Sony values the benefit at $7.99 a month. Premium is the day-one Ubisoft lane on PC. PCMag said console versions were on the way, so do not assume they are live in a particular region without checking the operator’s current offer.
Humble Choice and Steam favor keeping access
PCMag listed Humble Choice starting at $14.99 per month in July 2026; GoCancelIt listed $11.99. With no current Humble plan page established among the cited prices, $14.99 is the more cautious published figure, not a guarantee of the live checkout price. Its distinction from Game Pass is that the monthly games are delivered as Steam keys that you keep after cancellation.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | Included catalog | Available with Game Pass plans, from $9.99/month | 5, 10, or 15 hours/month on Essential, Premium, or Ultimate; quality commonly cited at 1440p/60 fps | Cloud hours are capped by tier |

| Boosteroid | Bring your own library | About €7.49/month when paid annually | No monthly hour cap; up to 4K/120 fps | Smaller library than GeForce NOW; stronger in Europe |
These are published specifications and service descriptions, not results from independent latency or frame-rate testing. Network quality, distance to a server, device, and game can affect the experience, and the listed resolutions or frame rates should not be read as a guarantee for every session.
Xbox Cloud Gaming: convenient, but not unlimited
Cloud access is included across Game Pass tiers, but the 2026 cap is central to choosing a plan: Essential allows five hours per month, Premium 10, and Ultimate 15. Xbox’s plan footnote says a supported device is sold separately. A person who streams heavily should compare that allowance with the service’s actual use pattern rather than assuming the top tier means unlimited play.

PlayStation Plus Premium and Amazon Luna
PS Plus Premium combines its catalog with cloud streaming of PS5 games and offers the strongest published resolution figure among the included-catalog services here. Amazon Luna’s reported offers are less settled: Cloudplay.now and GeekAnswers described a Prime-included Standard tier and $9.99 Premium in October 2026, while PCMag’s 23 July 2026 roundup listed $5.99 monthly. Because these accounts conflict, confirm the price and tier features at Amazon’s current Luna offer before subscribing. PCMag says Luna’s lowest-latency path requires the Amazon Luna controller; that is a hardware dependency to factor into the total setup.
GeForce NOW: stream eligible games you already have
GeForce NOW links Steam, Epic, Ubisoft, Battle.net, EA, GOG, and Xbox accounts, but the presence of a game in one of those stores does not guarantee it can be streamed: publishers must opt in. The service’s paid plans have allowed 100 hours per month since 1 January 2026, with 15 unused hours carried over. Additional 15-hour packs cost $2.99 on Performance or $5.99 on Ultimate. Sessions are limited to one hour on Free, six on Performance, and eight on Ultimate.

NVIDIA advertises RTX 5080 servers and up to 5K/120 fps for Ultimate. Annual plans are advertised as two months free. The headline hardware and resolution are vendor specifications, not evidence that every game or device will reach them. GeForce NOW is a better fit for a player whose desired titles are supported and who wants to stream an existing PC library than for someone seeking one all-inclusive catalog.
When does a hybrid subscription make sense?
GeekAnswers estimated that PC Game Pass at $13.99 plus GeForce NOW Performance at $9.99 totals about $24 per month, close to Ultimate’s $22.99. The hybrid gives access to PC Game Pass games alongside NVIDIA’s streaming pipeline rather than Xbox Cloud’s 15-hour Ultimate allowance, but it only works for titles that are both in PC Game Pass and enabled on GeForce NOW. It is not automatically a cheaper or broader option.
Boosteroid is another bring-your-own-library service, listed at about €7.49 per month when paid annually, with no monthly hour cap and up to 4K/120 fps. The cited comparison describes its library as smaller than GeForce NOW’s and its footprint as stronger in Europe. Shadow PC, at about $29.99–$30 a month, is a full Windows PC in the cloud rather than a game catalog. Antstream Arcade is a separate retro/arcade niche rather than a general Game Pass substitute.
What is leaving Game Pass, PS Plus, and Netflix Games this month?
Catalog memberships are rentals, so a game’s leaving date can matter more than a service’s headline catalog size. The cited late-October and November 2026 notices identify the following departures; verify the in-app leaving-soon list before making a purchase or subscription decision because availability changes.
- Game Pass, 31 October 2026: Day of the Tentacle Remastered, Dead Static Drive, Deep Rock Galactic, Full Throttle Remastered, Grim Fandango Remastered, Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, Wartales, and Wildgate. Pure Xbox cited the official app’s leaving-soon list. Discounts of at least 20% typically apply before a catalog game drops, though the displayed offer should be checked in the store.
- Netflix Games: Shadow and Bone: Enter the Fold is scheduled to shut down on 9 November 2026. Farming Simulator 23 is scheduled to leave on 20 November, with 19 November as its last play day, according to What’s on Netflix.
- PS Plus Extra/Premium, 17 November 2026: 11 titles are scheduled to leave, including Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2, as reported by Tech Insider.
Game Pass also added titles during October: Tech Insider’s account of Xbox Wave 1 lists Echo Weaver, Forever Ago, and Neon Abyss 2 for 8 October, and Battlefield 6 for 13 October on Ultimate and PC. It also listed Gears of War: E-Day as a day-one release for Series X|S, handheld, PC, and cloud. Additions and removals are useful timing signals, but they are not a reason to keep paying during months when the catalog has nothing you intend to play.
How should I compare subscriptions before paying?
Match the service to the device, games, and billing pattern you actually use. A lower monthly sticker price can be poor value if it does not include your platform or titles, while a discounted annual plan can cost more than a short subscription timed to a particular release.
- Start with hardware you own. Apple Arcade is for Apple devices, Play Pass for Android/Chromebooks, and console catalogs are tied to their respective ecosystems. Confirm that the TV, phone, controller, or console you plan to use is supported.
- Distinguish renting from ownership. A catalog subscription grants access while eligible; cancellation does not turn catalog games into purchases. Humble Choice Steam keys and direct Steam purchases are different.
- Check whether the title is included and for how long. Catalog counts do not mean every game is available in every region or stays indefinitely. Check the service’s catalog and leaving notices for the specific title before subscribing.
- Count cloud time, not just cloud access. Xbox tiers have explicit hour limits. Other services may publish no cap, but that is not the same as guaranteed latency, resolution, or a friction-free session on every connection.
- Compare annual commitments with your play calendar. Game Pass has no annual plan; PlayStation Plus, Switch Online, Arcade, and EA Play offer annual pricing in the cited US options. An annual discount helps only if you expect to use it across the year.
- Account for household sharing. Arcade supports sharing with up to five others, Play Pass Family Library up to six, and Switch Online family memberships up to eight. Do not assume that services without those stated sharing terms include equivalent household access.
- Review included extras before buying publisher passes separately. EA Play is included in Ultimate and PC Game Pass; Ubisoft+ Classics is included in Ultimate and PS Plus Extra/Premium.
Hunter Vault’s 2026 estimate puts two or three major subscriptions at about $38–$44 a month on monthly billing. Its fully loaded example—Game Pass Ultimate, PS Plus Extra, Switch Online Expansion Pack, and Apple Arcade—totals $613.63 a year with monthly billing, about $51 per month; using 12-month plans where offered reduces the cited total to $510.85. These are specific combinations, not universal household budgets, and the annual total still represents multiple services that may overlap in games and platform access.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I subscribe to Netflix Games without paying for Netflix video?
No. Netflix Games is bundled into Netflix memberships rather than sold as a separate gaming plan. If the household does not already want Netflix video, compare a dedicated mobile service instead of adding Netflix solely for games.
Does Apple Arcade work without an internet connection?
Apple says Arcade games can be played online or offline. Individual game features may still differ, so check a title’s listing if you need a particular mode to work offline.
Does every game I own work on GeForce NOW?
No. The game must be supported by the service, and publisher opt-in means some games in linked storefront libraries cannot be streamed. Check the GeForce NOW game list for a specific title before choosing a plan.
