Yes, you can connect a compatible Xbox controller to a Mac. Bluetooth is the simplest and officially documented method: turn on the controller, hold its Connect button, then choose it under Apple menu → System Settings → Bluetooth. For Apple’s controller customization settings, use macOS Ventura 13 or later.
Pairing only establishes the Mac connection. Whether the controller works in a particular Steam, Apple Arcade, cloud-gaming, emulator, or Mac-native game depends on that app’s controller support.

Apple currently lists these Xbox controllers as supported:

“Xbox One controller” is not precise enough. Some Xbox One revisions include Bluetooth and older ones do not. Xbox 360 controllers and original non-Bluetooth Xbox One controllers are not included on Apple’s current Xbox-specific list, so Bluetooth compatibility is not guaranteed for them.
Before you start
- Install batteries or charge the controller.
- Confirm the exact controller model and whether it has Bluetooth.
- Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on the Mac.
- Update macOS if possible.
- Have a USB cable that supports both data and charging if you want a wired fallback.
- Get a suitable USB adapter if the controller cable and Mac use different connector types.
Current Xbox controllers generally use USB-C; older models may use Micro-USB. A charging-only cable cannot reliably establish a wired controller connection.
How to connect an Xbox controller to a Mac via Bluetooth
- Press the controller’s Xbox button to turn it on.
- Press and hold the small Connect button for a few seconds. The controller should enter pairing mode; its Xbox logo light will flash.
- On the Mac, open Apple menu → System Settings.
- Choose Bluetooth in the sidebar.
- Find Xbox Wireless Controller in the nearby-devices list.
- Click Connect.
- Wait for the device status to change to connected.
- Open the game and check its controller or input settings.
Apple documents this Bluetooth route in its Mac game-controller guide. If the controller is already connected to an Xbox or another nearby device, temporarily turn Bluetooth off on that device while pairing.
How to check whether macOS recognizes the controller
On macOS Ventura 13 or later, open Apple menu → System Settings → Game Controllers, then select the connected Xbox controller. Depending on the controller and macOS version, you may see configuration or button-customization options.
This is useful for confirming that macOS has detected the controller, but it is not a guarantee that every game will accept every button or feature. Apple notes that support varies by controller and app.

Can you connect an Xbox controller with USB?
Sometimes. Apple says some compatible controllers can connect using a USB cable that supports both data and charging. A wired connection can also help diagnose Bluetooth interference.

Use the correct cable for the controller—USB-C or Micro-USB—and connect it directly to the Mac where possible. A USB-C-to-USB-C or USB-A-to-USB-C cable may require an adapter or hub depending on the Mac. Results can vary by controller model, macOS version, and game, so Bluetooth remains the officially documented Xbox-to-Mac route.
If the controller does not appear when wired, try a different cable explicitly labeled for data and charging. Do not use a charge-only cable as your test cable.
Using the controller in Steam and Mac games
Pair the controller before launching the game when possible. Then open the game’s input or controller settings and enable controller support if the option exists.

For Steam games, review the individual game’s controller configuration and Steam Input settings. The appropriate setting varies by game, and changing it may require restarting the game or reconnecting the controller.

Button prompts may show PlayStation symbols even when the Xbox controller is working. Rumble, the headset jack, lights, the Share button, and other special functions may also be unavailable or behave differently depending on the app.
Troubleshooting
The controller does not appear in Bluetooth
- Turn the controller off and on again.
- Hold the Connect button again until pairing mode starts.
- Charge the controller or replace its batteries.
- Move it closer to the Mac.
- Temporarily disconnect unnecessary Bluetooth devices.
- Turn off Bluetooth on a nearby Xbox, phone, tablet, or PC that may reconnect to the controller.
- Confirm that the controller actually has Bluetooth.
It appears but will not connect
- In System Settings → Bluetooth, choose Forget This Device if that option is available.
- Turn Bluetooth off and back on.
- Restart the Mac and controller.
- Put the controller back into pairing mode and pair it again.
- Install available macOS updates.
Apple specifically recommends updating the Apple device and controller, forgetting the controller, pairing again, and reducing nearby Bluetooth connections when troubleshooting.
It connects, then disconnects
Check battery level first. The controller may also be reconnecting to a nearby Xbox or suffering from Bluetooth interference. Forget and re-pair it, reduce nearby wireless devices, and test again. If macOS or the controller reports a firmware issue, follow Microsoft’s update instructions.

The Mac sees it, but the game does nothing
- Confirm the controller appears under System Settings → Game Controllers.
- Check whether the game supports controllers on macOS.
- Enable controller input in the game’s settings.
- Check Steam Input or another launcher’s controller layer.
- Make sure the game window has focus.
- Restart the game after pairing or changing input settings.
- Test another controller-compatible game.
If it works elsewhere, the problem is likely game-specific rather than a Bluetooth pairing failure.
Only some buttons or features work
This can be a limitation of the game or app. Controller support is not all-or-nothing: a game may accept movement and face buttons while lacking rumble, headset audio, lights, a Share button, or other specialized controls.
macOS asks for a firmware update
Apple directs users to Microsoft when an Xbox controller firmware update is required. Microsoft documents the Xbox Accessories app for Xbox consoles and Windows 10/11, not as a native macOS utility. The most dependable official update route is therefore an Xbox console or compatible Windows PC.
Do not install unofficial firmware tools merely because the controller is difficult to pair. If the controller already works, an update is not automatically necessary.

For the least friction, choose an Apple-listed Bluetooth controller such as an Xbox Wireless Controller Model 1708 or a Series S or Series X controller. The Elite Series 2 is also supported, but its premium controls are unnecessary if you only need basic Mac gaming. The Adaptive Controller is intended for accessibility and specialized input setups.

Do not buy the Xbox Wireless Adapter solely as a Mac solution without verifying support for the exact adapter, macOS version, and required driver. Microsoft’s current product information primarily positions it for Xbox consoles and Windows PCs. Bluetooth is the safer default for Mac users.
A data-capable USB cable or a correctly matched USB adapter is a more practical fallback when Bluetooth is unreliable. Neither solves a controller that lacks Bluetooth, needs firmware maintenance, or is unsupported by a particular game.
Using two controllers
Apple supports connecting two compatible controllers to a Mac. macOS also includes a Buddy Controller feature that can combine input from two controllers for one player. What changed about the “2025” guidance?
The relevant 2025 baseline is macOS Ventura 13 or later for Apple’s documented Game Controllers settings. The Bluetooth pairing steps remain applicable to current macOS. Apple’s Xbox-specific support page now shows a January 14, 2026 update date, so model support and menu labels should be checked against Apple’s current documentation if you are setting up a newer Mac.
