Gamma, a free PlayStation 1 emulator from mobile-emulation developer Benjamin Stark (known online as ZodTTD), arrived on Apple’s App Store for iPhone and iPad on May 11, 2024. Its release was significant because it followed Apple’s April 2024 policy change allowing retro-console emulator apps to distribute or offer games, subject to Apple’s review rules and applicable law.

Gamma lets users run legally obtained PlayStation software with touch controls or an external controller. It does not include a library of commercial PS1 games, and App Store availability does not make downloading unauthorized game files lawful.

Gamma is designed to emulate the original PlayStation on iPhone and iPad. Its documented features include:

The App Store listing also documents support for several commonly used image and archive formats, including CUE/BIN, CHD, PBP, ISO, MDS, and ZIP. Later release notes added or improved features such as multiplayer support, hardware-controller mapping, enhanced audio, SBI and PPF patch support, screenshots, and memory-card handling.
Exact availability can vary by app version and, in some cases, by whether the feature is part of Gamma’s free tier or Gamma Pro. Because the App Store listing and release notes change over time, users should check the current listing before assuming that a particular archive format or premium feature is included.
How to add games to Gamma
Gamma is an emulator, not a digital game store. The usual workflow is to place a game file that you are legally entitled to use in the iPhone or iPad’s Files app, then import it into Gamma. The developer specifically promotes Files-based importing.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Depending on the game and its format, a legally prepared backup may include a disc image, cue sheet, patch files, or multiple disc files. Gamma’s support for formats such as CUE/BIN, CHD, PBP, ISO, MDS, and ZIP can make importing more convenient, but it does not change the copyright status of the content inside those files.
Do you need a PlayStation BIOS?
Gamma’s terms state that the app does not include proprietary PlayStation BIOS files or commercial PlayStation games. If a game requires BIOS content, users are responsible for obtaining and using it only when they have the legal right to do so. Gamma’s terms also prohibit copyright infringement, unlawful circumvention of access controls, and obtaining or distributing unauthorized content.
In practical terms, downloading a PS1 ROM or BIOS from an unlicensed website is not made legal simply because Gamma came through Apple’s App Store. Users should follow the laws that apply where they live and use only game and system files they are authorized to possess and use.
Touch controls work, but a controller is optional
Gamma can be played with its on-screen controls, which makes it usable without buying anything else. However, PlayStation games designed around a physical controller—especially games that use analog movement, shoulder buttons, or rapid combinations—may feel more natural with a Bluetooth gamepad.

If you want a more console-like setup, look for a Bluetooth game controller for iPhone or iPad-compatible gamepad. Gamma documents external-controller support, but the accessory itself must still be checked for iPhone or iPad compatibility, the required iOS or iPadOS version, connection method, and button or analog-stick mapping. A controller is an optional accessory, not a requirement for using Gamma.
An iPad can provide a larger screen for multiplayer or longer sessions, and an adjustable stand may make that arrangement more comfortable. Neither a stand nor a controller is required by Gamma.

Gamma Sync and privacy considerations
Gamma Sync is optional. According to ZodTTD’s privacy documentation, users can connect Google Drive or Dropbox to store and retrieve selected emulator data. Depending on the features used, that data may include:
- Game files and related files
- BIOS files
- Memory cards and save states
- Controller skins
- Artwork and other metadata
- Identifiers, hashes, file sizes, and modification information used for synchronization
For ordinary local use, Gamma’s games, BIOS files, memory cards, save states, controller skins, and related emulator data generally remain on the device. They can leave the device when the user intentionally enables a feature such as Gamma Sync, submits content to a community feature, or attaches information to a support request where available.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Connecting Google Drive or Dropbox means the selected data is also processed by the connected cloud provider under that provider’s privacy policy. Cloud synchronization is therefore a convenience feature, not a requirement. Users who prefer to keep their emulator data local can leave Gamma Sync disconnected.
Apple’s App Store privacy label and Gamma’s own privacy policy serve different purposes. Apple’s label is a pre-download summary intended to help users compare app data practices, while the developer’s policy provides more detail about advertising, analytics, cloud synchronization, service providers, Gamma Pro, and related backend services. Readers should consult both when privacy is a deciding factor.
Is Gamma still completely free?
At launch in May 2024, contemporaneous coverage described Gamma as free and without in-app purchases. That was the launch state, not a permanent description of the product.
Later App Store release notes refer to Gamma Pro. Those notes describe Gamma Pro as removing advertisements and unlocking certain capabilities, including 7z-file importing. ZodTTD’s current policy also refers to advertising, Gamma Pro, Supporter features, and related services.
The safest summary is that Gamma began as a free App Store download, while its later product model includes paid or supporter-related options. Check the current App Store listing for the latest pricing, advertisements, and feature split before downloading.
Compatibility and performance: what can—and cannot—be promised
Gamma is intended to run PlayStation 1 software on iPhone and iPad, with touch and external-controller input. ZodTTD describes it as smooth and accurate, but those are the developer’s product claims rather than the result of independent testing.
It would be too broad to say that every PS1 game runs perfectly or that performance is identical across all Apple devices. The release history includes fixes for particular games, display issues, controllers, memory cards, synchronization problems, and iPad crashes. Those updates indicate continuing compatibility and stability work—and also show why no emulator should be presented as universally flawless without testing a specific game on a specific device.

For the best chance of a trouble-free setup, keep Gamma and iOS or iPadOS updated, use a game image in a supported format, test each disc in a multidisc title, and maintain more than one save method when a game matters. A normal in-game save and a Gamma save state serve different purposes; a save state should not be treated as the only backup of long-term progress.
Why Gamma’s App Store arrival mattered
Apple updated guideline 4.7 on April 5, 2024, adding retro-console emulator games to the category of software that could be permitted on the App Store. The guideline still places responsibility on developers for privacy, content, age ratings, and legal compliance.
Gamma’s release shortly afterward demonstrated the practical effect of that change. Instead of relying on sideloading or alternative distribution methods, iPhone and iPad owners could download a dedicated PS1 emulator through Apple’s normal App Store channel.
Gamma was compared with Riley Testut’s Delta emulator because the apps share some interface ideas, including customizable on-screen controller skins. Reporting also said that Testut permitted Stark to use relevant code from the Delta project. Gamma nevertheless remains a separate, PlayStation-focused application rather than a version of Delta.
Gamma versus the original PlayStation experience
Gamma’s advantages are convenience and portability: games can be played on a phone or tablet, save states can reduce the frustration of older checkpoint systems, and external controllers can provide familiar physical input. Multiple-disc support and memory-card tools are particularly useful for longer PS1 role-playing games and other titles that span several discs.

The trade-offs are equally important. Touch controls may be less comfortable than a physical gamepad, compatibility can vary by title and device, and importing legally obtained game files requires more preparation than buying a game directly from a modern console store. Cloud synchronization also adds another privacy and account-management decision.
Bottom line
Gamma’s importance is not that it supplies free PlayStation games. It does not. Its importance is that Apple’s revised emulator policy made a standalone PS1 emulator available through the App Store for iPhone and iPad.
For users with legally obtained game files, Gamma offers a practical mobile emulation setup with touch controls, gamepad support, save states, screenshots, multidisc handling, Files importing, and continuing post-launch development. Use the free app if touch controls are sufficient; add a compatible Bluetooth controller if you want a closer approximation of playing on original hardware; and treat game files, BIOS files, cloud syncing, pricing, and premium features as separate questions that require careful checking.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. Gamma does not include commercial PS1 games. Users must import game files they are legally entitled to use, and App Store approval does not authorize downloading copyrighted ROMs from unauthorized sources.
Does Gamma include PlayStation 1 games?
Yes. Gamma is designed for both iPhone and iPad and supports touch controls, external gamepads, save states, and other documented emulator features. Compatibility and performance can vary by game, device, and app version.
Can Gamma run on both iPhone and iPad?
Gamma launched as a free app without in-app purchases in May 2024, but later App Store notes introduced Gamma Pro-related features, including ad removal and some additional capabilities. Check the current App Store listing for the present pricing and feature split.
Is Gamma still free?
No. Gamma Sync is optional. It can connect Google Drive or Dropbox to synchronize selected emulator data, but ordinary local use does not require either cloud service.
Does Gamma Sync have to be enabled?
The Bottom Line
Gamma brought PlayStation 1 emulation to the iPhone and iPad App Store on May 11, 2024. It is a capable emulator with touch and controller support, but it does not provide commercial games or automatically make unauthorized ROM and BIOS downloads legal. The current app has evolved beyond its free-at-launch model, so check the latest App Store listing for Gamma Pro features, ads, formats, and release notes.
