Press Alt+Enter while the game is focused. That is the quickest fullscreen toggle supported by many Windows games. If it does not work, use the game’s Graphics, Video, or Display settings and select Fullscreen or Exclusive Fullscreen.
Start by clicking the game so it has focus, then press Alt+Enter. Many Windows PC games use this shortcut to switch between windowed and fullscreen display modes. It is not a universal Windows command, however: the game or its engine must support it.

If Alt+Enter does nothing, change the mode inside the game. Open Settings, Options, or the main menu, then go to Graphics, Video, or Display. Set Window Mode, Display Mode, or the equivalent option to Fullscreen or Exclusive Fullscreen, and choose Apply, Save, or Confirm.
Quick fixes to try first
- Launch the game and click inside it.
- Press Alt+Enter once. Wait a moment for the display to switch.
- If the game stays windowed, open its display settings.
- Choose Fullscreen or Exclusive Fullscreen, not merely Windowed.
- Apply the change. Restart the game if it requests one.
Some games label the alternative as Borderless, Borderless Fullscreen, or Windowed Fullscreen. These modes fill the monitor but generally remain windowed rather than using exclusive fullscreen. They are often the better choice if exclusive fullscreen flickers, minimizes when you switch applications, opens on the wrong monitor, or causes display-driver problems.

Fullscreen, exclusive fullscreen, and borderless: what is the difference?
| Mode | What it does | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Fullscreen or Exclusive Fullscreen | The game takes control of the display and covers the desktop. | Choose this when you specifically want exclusive fullscreen or when the game performs best in that mode. |
| Borderless Fullscreen | A window without visible borders, sized to fill the monitor. | Useful for easier Alt+Tab, multi-monitor use, and avoiding exclusive-mode display switching. |
| Windowed | The game occupies an ordinary resizable or fixed-size window. | Useful when you need to see other applications or when fullscreen modes are unstable. |
Borderless fullscreen may look identical to exclusive fullscreen, but Windows and the game can handle the two modes differently. Selecting borderless is therefore a practical workaround, not proof that exclusive fullscreen has been enabled.
How to force fullscreen from the game’s settings
- Start the game.
- Open Settings, Options, or the main menu.
- Choose Graphics, Video, or Display.
- Find Window Mode, Display Mode, or a similarly named setting.
- Select Fullscreen or Exclusive Fullscreen.
- Set the resolution to one supported by the intended monitor, preferably its native or Windows-recommended resolution.
- Select Apply, Save, or Confirm.
Games use different labels and sometimes hide display settings under an advanced graphics menu. If the screen goes black while applying the mode, wait for the confirmation prompt rather than immediately powering off the PC. Many games automatically restore the previous setting if you do not confirm it.
Force fullscreen for a supported Steam game
Some Valve GoldSrc and Source-engine games support the Steam launch option -fullscreen. It tells a supported engine to start in fullscreen mode before the game loads, which can help when an incompatible video configuration prevents you from reaching the graphics menu.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Stay on the General tab and find Launch Options.
- Enter
-fullscreen. - Close the Properties window and launch the game.
This is not a universal Steam fix. Valve’s documented common launch options apply to supported GoldSrc and Source games and do not automatically apply to most third-party games. If the option has no effect, remove it and use the title’s own display settings or the game publisher’s documentation. Do not add quotation marks unless that particular game’s instructions require them.

Fix the monitor and resolution when fullscreen uses the wrong display
A game can be fullscreen but still appear on the wrong monitor, show black bars, stretch the image, or immediately return to windowed mode. Check Windows before changing more invasive settings.
- Open Settings > System > Display.
- If more than one monitor is connected, select the monitor you want the game to use.
- Check its display resolution.
- Use the resolution marked Recommended unless you have a specific reason to choose another one.
- In the game, select the same resolution—or the monitor’s native resolution—and apply the fullscreen setting again.
A mismatch between the desktop resolution, game resolution, aspect ratio, and monitor can cause scaling or letterboxing. For example, a widescreen monitor displaying a game configured for a different aspect ratio may show black bars rather than filling every pixel. Matching the game to the selected monitor’s native or Windows-recommended resolution is the safest first test, although individual games and graphics drivers can apply their own scaling rules.
Use Windows 11 graphics settings for a windowed or borderless game
Windows 11 includes per-game graphics controls at Settings > System > Display > Graphics. These settings do not force a game into exclusive fullscreen. They are mainly relevant when the game runs in windowed or borderless-windowed mode.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Locate the game in the app list, or use the option to add it as a custom app.
- If the PC has more than one GPU, check the game’s preferred GPU.
- Review Optimizations for windowed games.
- Change the setting only if the problem involves windowed or borderless presentation, then restart the game.
Microsoft describes this optimization as targeting compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games in windowed or borderless-windowed modes. On supported hardware it can affect the presentation path and enable features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate. If the game behaves worse after changing it, restore the previous setting and restart the game.

Troubleshooting checklist when fullscreen will not stay enabled
1. The shortcut does nothing
Make sure the game itself is focused, then try Alt+Enter again. Some games do not implement the shortcut, and other applications may intercept keyboard combinations. Use the in-game graphics menu if there is no response.
2. Fullscreen is selected but the game immediately minimizes
Try Borderless Fullscreen. Then check Settings > System > Display and confirm that the intended monitor is active at a supported resolution. If the issue began after a game, Windows, or graphics-driver update, check the publisher or GPU manufacturer’s official troubleshooting guidance rather than installing an unrelated utility.
3. The game opens on the wrong monitor
In Windows display settings, identify the monitor you want to use and make it the primary display if the game provides no monitor selector. Then choose that display, its recommended resolution, and a matching resolution in the game. Borderless mode can also make multi-monitor behavior easier to manage.
4. Fullscreen has black bars or a stretched picture
Check the monitor’s aspect ratio and compare it with the game’s selected resolution. Test the monitor’s native or Windows-recommended resolution first. Black bars can be intentional scaling used to preserve the original aspect ratio; stretching can indicate that the game or driver is scaling a resolution to fit the screen.

5. The game is stuck in an unusable video configuration
Use a supported launch option to override the game’s settings before startup. For a compatible GoldSrc or Source title on Steam, try -fullscreen. Otherwise, look for the game publisher’s documented safe-mode, reset-configuration, or launch-argument procedure. Launch options are engine- and title-specific, so do not assume that a command working in one Steam game works in another.
6. The problem affects several games
If multiple games began having fullscreen or display problems after a driver or Windows change, investigate the display driver, monitor connection, refresh-rate configuration, and Windows updates. Use the official support path for your NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel GPU and follow the game publisher’s guidance. A driver update may be relevant to a broader display problem, but it is not required simply because one game starts windowed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What not to try first
- Do not assume F11 is a universal game fullscreen key. It is application-dependent and is not the primary fix for Windows games.
- Do not edit the registry as a first step. Registry changes are not a universal fullscreen solution and can create unrelated configuration problems.
- Do not disable fullscreen optimizations globally without a specific diagnosis. A per-game compatibility change may help one title but harm another.
- Do not confuse Windows 11 Xbox-mode experiences with game fullscreen. Microsoft’s newer Xbox-mode experience is a separate Windows 11 24H2-or-later gaming-handheld shell available in supported markets; it does not force an individual desktop game into exclusive fullscreen.
Recommended order of operations
- Focus the game and press Alt+Enter.
- Choose Fullscreen or Exclusive Fullscreen in the game’s Graphics, Video, or Display menu.
- Use Borderless Fullscreen if exclusive mode flickers, minimizes, selects the wrong monitor, or makes switching applications difficult.
- Check the intended monitor and recommended resolution under Settings > System > Display.
- If it is a compatible GoldSrc or Source game on Steam, try
-fullscreenunder Properties > Launch Options. - On Windows 11, review the game under Settings > System > Display > Graphics when the issue concerns windowed or borderless presentation, then restart.
- Only after these steps, investigate game updates, Windows changes, or graphics-driver problems—especially if several games are affected.
Optional broader PC troubleshooting
A fullscreen setting normally does not require a PC repair or driver-updater product. If the symptom is part of a wider Windows problem—such as crashes across several games, missing drivers, or general system instability—you may separately consider a Windows PC repair tool or check for outdated drivers. Those tools address broader repair or driver-maintenance tasks; they do not guarantee that a particular game will switch to fullscreen and should not replace the game’s own display controls.
Disclosure: This optional mention is not required to force fullscreen, and any product or service should be evaluated for your specific Windows problem before use.

Frequently Asked Questions
What keyboard shortcut makes a game fullscreen on Windows?
Click inside the game so it has focus, then press Alt+Enter. If the game supports the shortcut, it toggles between windowed and fullscreen. Otherwise, open the game’s Settings or Options menu, go to Graphics, Video, or Display, and select Fullscreen or Exclusive Fullscreen.
Does -fullscreen work for every Steam game?
No. Steam’s -fullscreen launch option is documented for supported Valve GoldSrc and Source-engine games. It does not automatically work with most third-party Steam games.
What is the difference between fullscreen and borderless fullscreen?
Borderless Fullscreen fills the monitor but generally runs as a borderless window. Exclusive Fullscreen gives the game exclusive control of the display. Borderless mode is often preferable when exclusive fullscreen flickers, minimizes, or handles Alt+Tab poorly.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →How do I stop a fullscreen game from using the wrong monitor?
Open Windows Settings and go to System > Display. Select the monitor you want to use, check its Recommended resolution, and choose a matching resolution in the game. Also check the game’s own monitor selector if it has one.
The Bottom Line
For most games, click the game and press Alt+Enter. If that fails, select Fullscreen or Exclusive Fullscreen in the game’s display menu. Use Borderless Fullscreen as the practical fallback, match the game to the intended monitor’s recommended resolution, and use Steam’s -fullscreen option only when that game and engine support it.
