If Windows says gds.dll is missing, gds.dll was not found, or that a procedure entry point is missing, do not download a random copy of the file. “GDS.DLL” is not established as one universal Windows 10 or Windows 11 component: it may be an application dependency, including the InterBase API DLL identified in older Delphi documentation. First identify the program, executable path, publisher and 32-bit or 64-bit architecture shown by the error. Then repair that application from its official installer, run Microsoft’s DISM and System File Checker sequence, and use matching Windows installation media only if DISM cannot obtain repair files. These steps usually let you troubleshoot the failure without immediately reinstalling Windows.
What is gds.dll, and why is the filename ambiguous?
A DLL is a library that an executable loads for shared functions. The name gds.dll does not identify one guaranteed Windows system file. A historical Delphi database guide labels GDS.DLL as an InterBase API DLL, while current troubleshooting guidance treats it as an application dependency. That means the correct repair depends on the program that is failing, not just on the filename.

For a game, launcher or utility, the file normally belongs to the software installed in that program’s directory. If the error appears only when one title starts, that title or its launcher is the first place to investigate. If several Windows features fail at the same time, protected Windows-file corruption becomes more plausible, and the DISM/SFC repair sequence should move higher in your plan.
| Error wording | What it can indicate | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| “gds.dll is missing” or “was not found” | The expected DLL is absent, in the wrong directory, blocked, or not installed with the application. | Identify the executable and repair or reinstall the owning application from its official source. |
| “The procedure entry point … could not be located in gds.dll” | The program found a DLL, but its exported functions do not match what the executable expects. A version or architecture mismatch is possible. | Do not replace the file with a download; repair the application and confirm that its DLLs come from the same release. |
| Several Windows tools also fail | Windows component corruption is more likely than a single application file problem. | Run DISM first and SFC second from an elevated Command Prompt. |
How do I identify which program owns gds.dll?
Ownership is the key decision. A DLL beside one application’s executable generally belongs to that application, so copying a file from another program or another Windows installation can create a second mismatch.

Capture the complete message
Write down the exact wording, the executable name, and any path shown in the dialog. Note whether the message says the file is missing, was not found, or lacks a procedure entry point. A shortcut may start a launcher rather than the game itself, so record the executable named in the error rather than assuming it is the title’s main program.
Inspect the installation directory
Right-click the shortcut, choose Properties, and review the target path. Open that folder in File Explorer and look for the application’s other files. If gds.dll is located beside that executable, treat it as an application-owned file unless the publisher’s documentation says otherwise. Do not move it to C:WindowsSystem32 or another global folder to make the message disappear.
Check publisher and architecture
Use the application’s official support page or installer to confirm the expected release. In File Explorer, right-click the executable or DLL, select Properties, and review the Details and Digital Signatures tabs when they are present. Confirm whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit and use a replacement from the same architecture. A 32-bit executable cannot safely be paired with an arbitrary 64-bit build simply because the filenames match.
Is downloading a standalone gds.dll safe?
No. Do not obtain a single gds.dll from an unverified DLL repository. Vendor guidance warns that an individual download can have the wrong version or introduce unsafe software. Even a file that removes the first dialog can cause an entry-point error, instability, or a security problem if it was built for a different application, release or architecture.
Use one of these controlled sources instead:
- The owning application’s official installer, repair option or file-verification feature.
- Microsoft’s Windows component-repair tools for protected system files.
- Matching Windows installation media or another supported Windows source when DISM cannot use Windows Update.
- The application publisher’s supported runtime or redistributable, when its documentation explicitly requires one.
Never copy a DLL from a friend’s computer, a different game, or an older Windows installation merely because the name is identical. Preserve the original error and path so you can undo a change if a repair makes the program behave differently.
How do I fix a missing or not-found gds.dll without reinstalling Windows?
Follow the sequence below. It starts with the least destructive application repair and then checks Windows components. Restart and test the original program after the repairs; do not test a different executable and assume the result applies to the failing one.

- Save the diagnostic details. Keep the full error text, executable path, publisher and architecture. If the program is a game, back up local saves before removing or reinstalling it, especially if cloud synchronization is not enabled.
- Install pending Windows updates and restart. Use Settings > Windows Update on Windows 11 or 10, apply available updates, and restart if practical. An update can also finish a previously incomplete component installation.
- Repair the owning application. Use the publisher’s installer or the application’s built-in repair or verify option. On Windows, you can also check Settings > Apps > Installed apps (called Apps & features on some Windows 10 builds) for a repair command. If no repair is offered, uninstall and reinstall from the official source, selecting the edition and architecture that match your installation.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt. Select Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, choose Run as administrator, and approve the User Account Control prompt. Run the following command exactly, including the spaces:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthDISM normally obtains repair content through Windows Update. Let it finish; closing the window or restarting during the operation can leave the repair incomplete.
- Run System File Checker after DISM. In the same elevated window, enter:
sfc /scannowMicrosoft’s sequence is DISM first and SFC second. Wait until SFC reports Verification 100% complete before closing the window.
- Restart and test the original executable. Launch the same program that produced the error. If it starts, do not copy additional DLLs into system folders; leave the repaired files in the locations installed by Windows or the application.
What do the SFC results mean?
SFC’s final message determines your next move:
- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.” SFC did not detect corruption in the protected Windows files it checked. A game-only failure then points back toward the application’s own installation, version or dependency.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.” Windows replaced the protected files it could repair. Restart, test the original program, and keep the result for your troubleshooting record.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.” Review
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.logfor the entries SFC could not repair. Back up important data before attempting further recovery, and do not substitute random DLLs for the files named in the log.
SFC is designed for protected Windows files. A clean SFC result does not prove that an application-owned gds.dll is present, current or compatible with the program that loads it.
What should I do if DISM says the source files cannot be found?
DISM normally uses Windows Update, but that source can be unavailable or damaged. Microsoft documents using a running Windows installation, a Windows side-by-side folder, a network share, or removable media as an alternate source, together with the /Source and /LimitAccess options.
The alternate source must match the installed Windows version, edition, language and architecture as closely as possible. Do not point DISM at a random ISO or another computer’s system folder. If you use installation media, identify the correct image and edition on that media and follow Microsoft’s documented syntax for its path and image index; an incorrect source can produce another repair error instead of fixing the first one.

A USB flash drive can carry matching Windows installation media for this purpose. It is a task-enabling accessory, not a universal gds.dll repair and not a container of replacement DLLs. Create or obtain media appropriate to the Windows installation you are repairing, then keep the drive connected only while you use the supported source.
How do I handle “the procedure entry point could not be located in gds.dll”?
This wording means the executable loaded a file named gds.dll but could not find the function it expected. The usual concern is not absence but incompatibility: the DLL may be from another application release, another architecture, or a partial installation.

- Use the official installer’s repair or verify function so the executable and its DLLs are restored as one matching set.
- If that fails, uninstall and reinstall the application from its publisher, selecting the correct Windows edition and architecture.
- Run DISM followed by SFC if Windows itself shows other file or component errors.
Do not solve an entry-point error by downloading a DLL with the same name. The exported functions, build and architecture must match the executable that calls them.
What is the right repair path for a game that will not launch?
Start with the game or launcher named by the dialog, not with a global DLL download. Use the launcher’s file-verification or repair command if it offers one, then check the game’s installation directory and the shortcut target. If the launcher starts but the game fails, repair the game installation separately; if both fail, repair the launcher first and then the game.
Keep local saves and configuration files in a separate backup before uninstalling. Cloud saves can be delayed or disabled, and a reinstall may remove local data depending on the title. After reinstalling, launch the same executable that originally failed and confirm whether the message has changed; a different error can indicate that one problem was corrected while another dependency remains.
When should I use Windows recovery or reinstall Windows?
Escalate only after the application repair, DISM and SFC paths have been attempted and important data is backed up. If SFC cannot repair protected files, use the CBS log to understand what remains, then consider Windows recovery options. A clean Windows installation is a last resort because it removes applications and can remove data if you do not back it up first.
Microsoft’s escalation guidance can include using a known-good copy through appropriate administrative procedures, Windows recovery, or reinstalling Windows. A known-good copy must match the file’s role and system architecture; manually overwriting protected files without the documented permissions and servicing steps can make Windows less stable. For an application-owned DLL, repairing or reinstalling that one application is normally less disruptive than reinstalling the operating system.
Which repair option should I choose?
| Situation | Preferred source | Risk and escalation cost |
|---|---|---|
| Only one application fails and the DLL is in its folder | That application’s official repair, verify or reinstall process. | Usually limited to the application; protect saves and settings first. |
| Several Windows features fail or SFC reports corruption | DISM, then SFC, using Windows Update when available. | System-wide changes; restart and review the final messages. |
| DISM cannot find repair content | Matching installation media, side-by-side folder or supported network source with /Source and /LimitAccess. |
Wrong version, edition, language or architecture can fail; verify the source before running it. |
| Repairs do not restore protected files | CBS.log review, then Windows recovery or a clean reinstall if necessary. | Highest disruption; back up personal files and application data first. |
| A standalone DLL download is suggested | Do not use it; return to the owning application or Microsoft-supported repair source. | Unverified files can be unsafe or incompatible. |
What should I check before declaring the problem fixed?
- The original error no longer appears for the same executable.
- The repaired
gds.dll, when present, is in the application directory or supported Windows location expected by its publisher. - The application and DLL come from the same official release and architecture.
- DISM and SFC were run in the required order if Windows corruption was suspected.
- The program works after a restart, not only during the current session.
- Game saves, settings and other personal data remain available after any reinstall.

Frequently asked questions
How do I preserve game saves before reinstalling the affected program?
Check the game’s own save-location documentation and copy local save folders to another drive before uninstalling. If cloud synchronization is enabled, let it finish and verify that the newest timestamp appears online, but keep a local backup in case synchronization overwrites an older save.

Can a 32-bit application use any 64-bit gds.dll?
No. The executable and DLL must be compatible in architecture as well as release. A mismatched pair can produce an entry-point or load failure even when the filename is correct, so obtain both from the same installer or supported runtime.
Why does the launcher work while the game executable still fails?
A launcher and the game can have separate installation directories and dependencies. Inspect the executable named in the error and run repair or verification for that component specifically; repairing only the launcher may leave the game’s files unchanged.
What information should I give the application publisher?
Provide the complete error text, the failing executable path, Windows edition and architecture, the application version, and the results of DISM and SFC. Include the relevant CBS.log lines only after removing personal paths or other sensitive information.
