Halo: Parasite’s Wake is a horror novel by Tim Lebbon set during the events of Halo: Combat Evolved on Alpha Halo, also called Installation 04. It follows Staff Sergeant Marvin Mobuto and survivors from the Pillar of Autumn brig as they attempt to reach the ship’s crash site while Covenant forces battle across the ring and a deeper threat emerges from Halo’s underworld.
That makes the book a concurrent companion to the first Halo game, not a sequel that takes place afterward. The official material establishes the premise, setting, principal character and formats, but does not publish a chapter-by-chapter chronology or reveal the novel’s complete sequence of events.

What kind of Halo story is Parasite’s Wake?
Halo: Parasite’s Wake is an original Halo-universe novel written by Tim Lebbon and presented by Halo Waypoint as a horror story. Its narrative runs alongside Halo: Combat Evolved, using the game’s Alpha Halo setting while following a group of human survivors whose experience is separate from the game’s main playable perspective.
The book’s central situation is straightforward: Staff Sergeant Marvin Mobuto leads people who escaped the Pillar of Autumn brig toward the crashed ship and the chance to regroup with other UNSC personnel. Their route crosses a war already in progress between humanity and the Covenant. The official synopsis adds a second danger from deep inside the ring, turning a military retreat into a survival crisis for both sides.

Because the premise is framed as horror, the novel’s emphasis is on isolation, uncertainty and the vulnerability of stranded personnel rather than on presenting another conventional battlefield campaign. “Horror” describes the book’s stated genre; the available official descriptions do not specify its exact subgenre, intensity or content warnings.
When and where does it take place?
Alpha Halo, or Installation 04
The story is set on the ringworld known as Alpha Halo and Installation 04. Those names refer to the same installation. The ring is the immediate environment for the novel: human survivors, Covenant units and the newly unleashed underworld threat are all operating on that installation rather than in a later, unrelated Halo location.
The publisher’s synopsis places the events in 2552, as Reach falls and the Pillar of Autumn reaches the ring. Human forces are scattered after the ship’s arrival, which explains why Mobuto’s group is trying to find a specific crash site instead of moving with an organized UNSC formation.
During the first game, not after it
Halo Waypoint describes the novel as taking place while Halo: Combat Evolved unfolds. The useful way to place it is therefore “alongside the game’s Alpha Halo events.” It is not advertised as a sequel set after the game’s ending, and the official pages do not establish a precise day-by-day position for every chapter.
Readers should avoid assigning exact mission-by-mission overlap unless a future official timeline provides it. The confirmed boundaries are the 2552 setting, the arrival of the Pillar of Autumn at Installation 04 and the fact that Mobuto’s story happens during the game’s overall narrative.

What happens in the story?
Mobuto’s objective
Mobuto’s immediate objective is to get the brig survivors to the Pillar of Autumn crash site. Reaching the wreck is both a geographical goal and a survival strategy: the group needs to reconnect with UNSC forces while the installation is destabilized by combat.
The people traveling with him are not presented as a standard handpicked marine squad. They are survivors from the ship’s brig, and the synopsis identifies charges among them that include desertion, disorderly conduct and murder. Those details establish internal friction and a complicated chain of trust before the group even encounters the larger threats on the ring.
A war on two levels
The survivors must cross territory where Covenant forces are fighting for control of Halo’s weapons and secrets. That conflict supplies the conventional danger in the premise: the group can be caught between opposing forces even when neither side is specifically hunting them.
Then the novel introduces a more dangerous threat released from Halo’s underworld. The official synopsis deliberately keeps the nature and mechanics of that threat unrevealed. What is confirmed is its effect on the situation: the conflict becomes a survival struggle involving UNSC and Covenant personnel alike.
There is not an official chapter summary, complete cast list or spoiler outline in the material currently available. Claims about specific encounters, deaths, twists or the exact identity of the underworld threat would go beyond the published synopsis.

Who is Marvin Mobuto?
Staff Sergeant Marvin Mobuto is the novel’s primary character and the leader of the brig survivors. His role gives the book a character-level viewpoint on the events at Installation 04: instead of following the central game protagonist, the narrative tracks a nonstandard group trying to survive and reach a rendezvous point.

Halo Waypoint notes that he was originally introduced in the 2003 novelization Halo: The Flood. That connection is useful for readers who recognize the name or want to explore an earlier appearance, but the announcement does not say that reading The Flood is required. The new novel’s premise identifies the people involved and their objective clearly enough to establish its own starting point.
How does the novel fit into Halo continuity?
A companion perspective
The best continuity label is “companion story.” The game supplies the shared setting and historical moment, while Parasite’s Wake follows Mobuto and the stranded brig population elsewhere on the installation. This lets the novel expand the human experience of Alpha Halo without being described as a direct continuation of the game’s ending.
That framing also explains why familiar events may be present as background without making the book a retelling of the game. The official descriptions do not promise that every major game mission appears on the page, nor do they identify which scenes occur simultaneously with particular missions.
What the official material confirms—and leaves open
- Confirmed: the setting is Alpha Halo/Installation 04.

- Confirmed: Mobuto leads survivors from the Pillar of Autumn brig toward the crash site.
- Confirmed: Covenant forces are fighting over Halo’s weapons and secrets.

Do you need to play Halo: Combat Evolved first?

However, the available announcement does not impose a play-order requirement. It introduces the principal group, their destination and the pressures around them. A reader who has not played the game can approach the novel as a self-contained survival story set in an established science-fiction universe, while a returning player can treat it as an unseen perspective on the same historical window.
Is The Flood required reading?
No requirement is stated. Mobuto’s earlier appearance in the 2003 novelization Halo: The Flood is a continuity link, not a published prerequisite. Reading that book may provide extra context for readers interested in Mobuto’s history, but the official announcement does not say that Parasite’s Wake depends on it.
If you want the simplest route, read Parasite’s Wake on its own after learning the basic premise of Halo: Combat Evolved. If you prefer a chronological tour through Mobuto’s appearances, read or revisit The Flood separately, then start the new novel with the understanding that its events still occur during the first game’s Alpha Halo episode.

Which edition should you choose?
Trade paperback
The paperback is the straightforward choice if you want a physical shelf copy or prefer reading without a device. Its listed length is 400 pages. That figure describes the publisher’s trade-paperback edition and should not be treated as an exact screen-equivalent length for the ebook.
Ebook
The ebook uses a separate ISBN, 9781668226841. Digital page counts can vary with font, screen and reading settings, and the publisher’s listing does not provide a fixed page total. Choose it when portability, adjustable text or immediate digital access matters more than a physical copy.
Unabridged audio
The audio download is listed at 11 hours under ISBN 9781668167748. Five credited readers—Michael Crouch, Lisa Flanagan, Kevin R. Free, Joshua Riley and Tim Dadabo—are named on the publisher page. The available information does not establish comparative sound quality, performance style or whether one format is better for a particular listener.

What should readers expect from the tone?
Expect a Halo military-survival premise filtered through horror. The group is isolated, includes people with serious disciplinary histories and must move through an installation contested by Covenant forces while an additional threat spreads from below. Those elements support a tense, distrustful atmosphere, but the official material does not provide a rating, warning list or detailed description of graphic content.
The book’s horror identity also distinguishes it from a simple retelling of familiar game missions. Its interest lies in what stranded personnel experience away from the game’s central path: uncertain loyalties, a difficult route to the crash site and a danger that neither side fully controls.
What is still unknown before reading?
Readers looking for a complete plot synopsis should note the limits of the official announcement. It does not identify the exact nature of the underworld threat, list every survivor, explain how the group’s criminal charges affect later decisions or map each event against a named Halo: Combat Evolved mission.
It also does not publish a direct Tim Lebbon quotation about this novel. The phrase describing the book as an “original novel set in the Halo universe” is publisher copy, not an attributed interview statement. No reliable readership, sales or performance statistic is supplied, so those figures cannot be inferred from the book’s publication details.
Bottom line for Halo readers
Halo: Parasite’s Wake expands the Alpha Halo period from the viewpoint of Staff Sergeant Marvin Mobuto and a troubled group of Pillar of Autumn brig survivors. It is set during Halo: Combat Evolved, not after it, and its defining twist on the familiar setting is a horror threat emerging from Halo’s underworld while Covenant and UNSC forces struggle around the ring. The paperback, ebook and 11-hour unabridged audio editions give readers several ways to enter the story, while the precise chronology and full plot remain intentionally undisclosed until the novel is read.
