Those figures measure different kinds of access: the 62,000 is an estimated number of purchases, and the 1.7 million is not a sales total. Microsoft had not published its own sales or player figures in contemporaneous reporting.
What the Xbox and Game Pass numbers mean
Alinea Analytics analyst Rhys Elliott published the estimates on October 9, 2026, covering the October 1 early-access launch, the October 6 full release, and the first days afterward. Alinea’s estimated 230,000 total copies breaks down as follows:

These are Alinea’s modeled estimates, not figures confirmed by Microsoft. The platform split also means “Xbox sales” here includes Xbox console and PC; it is not a console-only number. Alinea’s original estimate is available in its October 9 analysis.

Game Pass access is subscription play, not a separately purchased copy. Alinea estimated 1.7 million subscribers played through the service, while estimating 230,000 paid copies across Xbox and Steam. The figures should not be added together and described as copies sold.

The upgrade count is another distinct measure. Alinea estimates that 722,000 Game Pass players paid $30 for up to five days of early access beginning October 1. It also reports another 250,000 early-access upgrades sold between the review embargo lifting and full release. These are paid access upgrades, not additional game copies or a count of purchases that Game Pass displaced.
Why does one headline say 320,000 copies?
Kotaku’s October 9 headline says “320,000”, but the article’s opening and body quote Alinea’s 230,000 estimate, including 168,000 on Steam and 62,000 on Xbox. Alinea’s own post also gives 230,000. The available reporting does not explain the headline’s higher number, so 230,000 is the figure supported by the analyst’s published estimate and the article text.

What Alinea estimates in revenue—and what that does not prove
Alinea estimates approximately $37 million in total revenue: about $26 million on Xbox and $11 million on Steam. It estimates the 722,000 early-access upgrades generated approximately $21.7 million. These are analyst estimates, not audited or Microsoft-confirmed revenue figures.

Alinea describes nearly 950,000 people as having paid something when it counts upgrade purchasers alongside game purchasers. That does not mean nearly 950,000 copies were sold: upgrade buyers and copy buyers are different categories, and the reported upgrade figures should not be treated as extra units.

Does the estimate show that Game Pass reduced sales?
No. Elliott argues that day-one Game Pass may have cannibalized full-price purchases, but the estimate cannot establish what subscribers would have bought if the game had not been on the service. It does not quantify lost sales, or show whether Game Pass makes the game profitable or unprofitable overall. Tbreak’s contemporaneous report also notes the lack of Microsoft-confirmed results: its October 9 coverage.
