If GeForce ShadowPlay says it failed to install, reset the NVIDIA installation state before trying unusual fixes. Restart Windows, remove the existing NVIDIA App or older GeForce Experience installation, and retry. If that does not work, stop NVIDIA services and processes, remove NVIDIA’s documented logging keys, and run NVIDIA’s clean driver installation with Custom (Advanced) and Perform a clean installation selected. Windows also provides Repair, Reset, uninstall, and installation-troubleshooting tools. ShadowPlay is now delivered through the NVIDIA App, although older installers and search results still call the host program GeForce Experience.
What does “GeForce ShadowPlay install failed” actually mean?
In many cases, the message does not identify a broken ShadowPlay component. NVIDIA Support describes generic NVIDIA App and graphics-driver failures as an “incorrect system state”: the installer encounters a conflict but cannot name one precise cause. A previous installation, a running NVIDIA process, a blocked service, damaged installer data, Windows app-registration problems, or a configuration-specific dependency can all leave the same message.

Do not begin by deleting registry keys or disabling every security feature.
Is ShadowPlay still part of GeForce Experience?
For current installations, ShadowPlay is included in the NVIDIA App. NVIDIA describes it as a game-capture tool with DVR-style Instant Replay, manual recording, Highlights, screenshots, and an in-game overlay. Older downloads and many search results still use “GeForce Experience,” so an article or error that says “GeForce Experience or ShadowPlay failed” may refer to the same installation family.

How do I fix a generic ShadowPlay installation failure?
1. Restart Windows and retry
Save your work and restart Windows completely, rather than signing out or merely closing the installer. NVIDIA identifies a reboot as the best first step because it releases files, services, and pending update operations that can block a new installation.
- Restart the computer from Start > Power > Restart.
- After signing back in, download the current NVIDIA App installer from NVIDIA’s official download page.
- Run the installer once, without launching games, browsers playing video, GPU-monitoring utilities, or tuning tools in the background.
If the same error appears, remove the existing NVIDIA App or related NVIDIA installation before trying again. In Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find the NVIDIA App and other NVIDIA software, select the three-dot menu, and choose Uninstall. In Windows 10, use Settings > Apps > Apps & features or Control Panel > Programs and Features. Restart after the uninstall, then retry the current installer.
2. Reset NVIDIA services, processes, and installer state
Use this stage when a restart and normal uninstall did not clear the failure. You will need an administrator account. Registry editing can damage Windows if unrelated entries are changed, so create a registry backup or restore point first and touch only the two NVIDIA logging locations listed below.
- Press
Windows + R, typeservices.msc, and press Enter. - In the Services console, stop every service whose name starts with NVIDIA. Right-click each matching service, choose Stop, and leave the console open until all such services are stopped.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl + Shift + Esc. On the Processes and Details views, end NVIDIA processes and processes whose names begin withnv. If Windows says a process cannot be stopped, note it and continue with the others. - Review any Group Policy, endpoint-security rule, or other system restriction that could prevent an installer from creating services, writing to protected folders, or modifying drivers. On a work or school computer, an administrator may have to make this change.
- Press
Windows + R, enterregedit, and approve the elevation prompt. In Registry Editor, removeHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARENVIDIA CorporationLoggingif it exists. - Also remove
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWow6432NodeNVIDIA CorporationLoggingif it exists. Do not delete the parent NVIDIA keys or unrelated entries. - Close Registry Editor, restart Windows, and run the NVIDIA App installer again.
Registry deletion is a later reset step, not a casual first attempt. If the installation still fails, uninstall all NVIDIA programs from Installed apps or Control Panel, reboot, repeat the service and process reset, and then reinstall.

How do I perform NVIDIA’s clean driver installation?
Use a clean installation when the failure occurs while the NVIDIA App is installing its bundled display driver, or when driver registration appears to be the point of failure. NVIDIA’s procedure, updated May 26, 2026, resets the driver package rather than layering another copy over the existing one.
- Identify the exact GPU model in Settings > System > About, Device Manager, or the manufacturer’s documentation.
- Download the current Game Ready Driver for that exact GPU from NVIDIA. Select the appropriate Windows version and desktop or notebook hardware; do not use a driver for a similar-looking model.
- Close browsers, video players, 3D applications, games, GPU-monitoring utilities, overclocking tools, and other open programs. These programs can hold driver files open.
- NVIDIA warns that aggressive third-party real-time security monitoring can interfere with installation. Follow your organization’s security policy; NVIDIA’s procedure allows Microsoft Defender to remain enabled.
- Right-click the downloaded driver installer and choose Run as administrator.
- When prompted for the component choice, select NVIDIA Graphics Driver and NVIDIA App.
- Choose Custom (Advanced), then enable Perform a clean installation.
- Continue through the installer and restart Windows when it finishes, even if no restart is immediately forced.
A clean install can reset display-driver settings and temporarily remove the previous driver configuration. It is different from simply rerunning the same installer, so reserve it for cases where the basic reinstall has not worked or the failure clearly occurs during driver setup.
Can Windows repair or remove the NVIDIA App?
Yes. Microsoft’s desktop-app guidance for Windows 10 and Windows 11 provides a Repair option, a Reset option when available, normal uninstall, and troubleshooters for programs that cannot be installed or removed.
Repair and reset the app
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11.
- Find NVIDIA App, open its three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair first. This attempts to correct the app without removing its data.
- If Repair does not help and Reset is available, select it. Reset is more disruptive because it removes the app’s stored data and returns its registration to a clean state.
- Restart Windows and attempt the installation again.
Windows 10 exposes similar controls through Settings > Apps > Apps & features, although labels and placement can vary by build. If Advanced options are unavailable, uninstall the app, restart, and reinstall the current NVIDIA App package.

Use Microsoft’s installation troubleshooter
When Windows blocks installation, removal, or an update, use Microsoft’s program-installation and uninstallation troubleshooter. It is intended for damaged product-registration data and installer records that prevent a normal uninstall or reinstall. Run it after closing NVIDIA processes, and choose the NVIDIA entry if the tool lists one.
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. That end date does not prove Windows 10 caused a ShadowPlay failure, but an unsupported system may lack future fixes and should be considered when deciding whether to upgrade to a supported Windows release.

What configuration checks can fix ShadowPlay when NVIDIA’s steps fail?
The following checks come from secondary troubleshooting guidance, not NVIDIA’s primary installer procedure. Treat them as conditional tests: use the ones that match your Windows edition or symptoms instead of changing every setting at once.
Confirm the GPU and operating-system requirements
Verify that the computer has an NVIDIA GPU supported by the current driver and that Windows is a supported 64-bit edition for the package you downloaded. Check the exact model and operating-system selection on NVIDIA’s driver-download page. A driver for the wrong GPU family can fail even when the installer itself launches normally.
Repair Windows system files with SFC
Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait for verification to reach 100 percent, follow the result message, restart Windows, and retry the NVIDIA installation. Do not close the window while the scan is running.
Check DirectX components
ShadowPlay and the games it captures depend on Windows graphics components. Install pending Windows updates and verify that DirectX is current for your Windows release. If a game or installer reports a missing DirectX library, repair that Windows component before repeating the NVIDIA installation.
Install the Media Feature Pack on K, N, or KN editions
Windows K, N, and KN editions omit certain media technologies. Secondary guidance identifies a missing Windows Media Feature Pack as a possible contributor to GeForce Experience or ShadowPlay failures on those editions. Check Settings > System > About for the Windows edition, then install the Media Feature Pack through Windows’ Optional Features workflow if your edition requires it. Restart afterward.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Test with integrated graphics in mind
Some systems have both an NVIDIA GPU and integrated graphics. A secondary guide lists an enabled integrated GPU as a possible contributor in certain configurations. Do not disable hardware blindly: first record the current Device Manager state, confirm which adapter drives the display, and change one setting at a time. If the installation succeeds only after a graphics change, restore normal hardware settings and update the appropriate driver.
Try a new Windows user account
A damaged per-user profile can block app registration while the operating system itself is healthy. Create a temporary local administrator account, sign in to it, and run the NVIDIA installer there. A successful installation in the new account points to profile-specific permissions or corrupted per-user data; copy needed files and repair the original profile rather than keeping an unnecessary administrator account.
Use a clean boot or Safe Mode only as a diagnostic
Background software can lock files or inject security controls into an installer. A clean boot starts Windows with nonessential services disabled, while Safe Mode loads an even smaller driver set. Use either only long enough to test the installation, record what changed, and return to normal startup afterward. If the installer works in a clean boot, re-enable services in groups to identify the conflict instead of leaving essential services disabled.

It fails immediately after launching
Restart Windows, run the package as administrator, and check whether security software or Group Policy is blocking execution. If an older NVIDIA program is still present, uninstall it, restart, and retry before using registry cleanup.

It fails while installing the display driver
Use the exact-GPU Game Ready Driver and NVIDIA’s Custom (Advanced) clean-install path. Close monitoring, tuning, video, and 3D programs first. A driver-stage failure is the clearest case for the clean installation procedure.
It fails during removal or says another installation is in progress
Restart, stop NVIDIA services and processes, and run Microsoft’s program-installation and uninstallation troubleshooter. Do not repeatedly start several installers at once; overlapping Windows Installer jobs can preserve the locked state you are trying to remove.

The app installs, but ShadowPlay is not available
Confirm that the current NVIDIA App is installed rather than only the display driver, then open its in-game overlay and recording controls. ShadowPlay is delivered as an NVIDIA App feature; installing a driver alone does not provide the complete app interface.
How can I verify that the repair worked?
- Open the NVIDIA App and confirm that it loads without an installation or update banner.
- Check the installed driver version in the app or Device Manager and confirm that the GPU model matches the hardware.
- Launch a game and open the NVIDIA in-game overlay using the shortcut configured in the app.
- Test a short manual recording before enabling longer Instant Replay sessions.
- Use a separate screenshot and recording folder with sufficient free space, and verify that a test file plays back normally.
If the app opens but the overlay fails only in one game, the remaining issue may be game-specific rather than an installation failure. Record the exact Windows edition, GPU model, driver version, installer stage, and any error text before seeking support; those details prevent repeating generic fixes.
When should I stop troubleshooting and seek help?
Escalate when the installer fails after a reboot, complete uninstall, NVIDIA reset, clean driver installation, and Windows recovery steps, or when Windows itself reports disk, servicing, or permission errors. On a managed computer, ask the administrator to review Group Policy and endpoint-security logs instead of changing them yourself. An authorized PC repair service is appropriate when registry corruption, repeated driver crashes, or broader Windows installation failures affect other software too.
Do not buy a new GPU, capture card, USB drive, or antivirus product solely because ShadowPlay will not install. Those purchases do not address the installer-state and Windows-registration problems described above.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install ShadowPlay without the NVIDIA App?
For current releases, ShadowPlay is packaged as a feature of the NVIDIA App rather than a separate standalone installer. Older GeForce Experience references describe the previous host application, so use the current NVIDIA App package when replacing an old installation.
Does Windows 10 end-of-support automatically cause this error?
No. Microsoft’s October 14, 2025 support-end date does not establish a direct cause for an individual ShadowPlay failure. It does mean that upgrade planning is sensible if the computer remains on an unsupported Windows release and installation problems continue.

It is an advanced reset, not a routine cleanup. Back up the registry or create a restore point, delete only the two documented Logging keys if they exist, and leave all parent NVIDIA keys and unrelated entries untouched.
Why would a clean boot help when normal Windows starts correctly?
A clean boot can reveal a background service, overlay, tuning utility, or security product that locks installer files or blocks driver registration. If installation works there, re-enable services in groups to identify the conflict and then return Windows to normal startup.
