This guide covers the original Ghost Master, the 2003 strategy-puzzle game—not other games with the same name. It is not a boss-rush: most missions ask you to solve haunting objectives, and only a few late-game threats act like bosses by capturing or banishing your ghosts. The key is to manage Plasm, keep the right mortals available to complete objectives, and protect vulnerable haunters when the danger escalates.
How to approach Ghost Master’s “boss” encounters
Ghost Master was developed by Sick Puppies and published by Strategy First, with an original release date of August 23, 2003. Its campaign is built around frightening, influencing or manipulating mortals and solving environmental puzzles, rather than defeating a sequence of bosses. Steam describes up to 15 adventures across 11 locations; the level list in the community walkthrough runs from “Haunting 101” through “Class Of Spook’em High.” Steam’s store listing and the community walkthrough are the basis for those descriptions.

For difficult missions, think in terms of the objective trigger, which mortal must remain available, what can happen to your haunters, and what you can safely do before the threat arrives. That approach fits the game better than a health-bar or fixed-phase boss strategy.
Understand Terror, Plasm and haunter placement
The official manual describes a resource loop: frightening mortals creates Terror, Terror generates Plasm, and Plasm powers haunter abilities. Plasm is allocated among bound haunters, so a prolonged or costly power can leave less available for another ghost. A haunter can exist in the mortal realm only while bound to a fetter—an object or place—and the manual says each haunter can learn one power per Plasm Band. - Build resources before a long setup. Scare mortals to produce Plasm before relying on several powers in sequence.
- Match a haunter to the job. Bind it where its powers can reach the intended mortal or object.
- Use movement and attraction deliberately. Draw the right mortal into position before using a scare or environmental interaction.
- Stop powers when their task is done. The walkthrough’s early-level advice uses this to conserve time and Plasm for the next action.
- Check training between missions. A route may depend on a particular power, and training choices cannot be reversed.
You direct binding and power use, but should not assume every ghost behaves like a unit under precise moment-to-moment control; the manual describes haunters carrying out their actions once instructed.
Ghostbreakers: prevent captures from derailing the mission
The community walkthrough describes a mission where frightened mortals call a medium and three Ghostbreakers follow. Its advice is to prioritize those threats and keep haunters out of capture range. The walkthrough says captured ghosts return after the mission, but that is a player-authored claim, not an official guarantee. Treat it as a route to verify in your edition, rather than a reason to risk a valuable haunter.

Before the investigators arrive
- Read the objective and identify which mortals must still act or remain present.
- Position haunters so they can contribute without unnecessarily exposing them to the medium or investigators.
- Build enough Plasm to respond, while avoiding an expensive power that does not advance the mission.
When the threat is active
- Watch the medium and the investigators rather than focusing only on the scare total.
- Prioritize removing or distracting the threats where your available powers and objectives allow.
- Withdraw exposed, high-value haunters if the situation puts them at risk of capture.
- Resume the mission’s ordinary scare or puzzle tasks once the immediate danger is controlled.
The precise behavior and timing in this sequence come from the older walkthrough; the reliable strategic lesson is to treat capture as a mission-level risk and protect ghosts that are exposed.
Class Of Spook’em High: survive the Ice Cream Man
The walkthrough identifies “Class Of Spook’em High” as an additional finale in Steam and GOG editions, distinct from the original release’s final mission. In this bonus level, it describes the Stay Cold Ice Cream Man as a threat capable of banishing ghosts. The author’s route recommends preparing for the level’s ether-bomb and ward objectives before he appears, then benching exposed haunters as soon as he arrives. Because this is older community guidance and the exact behavior may vary between builds, use the route as a cautious plan rather than a guaranteed sequence.

Safer priorities
- Use the setup time to advance the ether-bomb and ward objectives where possible.
- Keep track of which ghosts are exposed and withdraw vulnerable haunters when the banisher appears.
- Do not leave valuable ghosts in danger merely to maintain a scare rate; prioritize completing the objective while limiting banishment risk.
Why scaring every mortal can make you fail
Many missions depend on a mortal remaining in place long enough to discover, report, summon or interact with something. Scaring everyone away can remove the character needed to trigger the objective. Read the target condition first, then use attraction or movement powers to put the intended person in position and avoid broad effects on bystanders until the needed interaction is complete.
Mission examples
- Haunting 101: The walkthrough presents this as the tutorial and describes using Boo’s Leak and Rattle Chains to draw mortals into a room for a group scare. It also describes a Weatherwitch unlock involving Cogjammer and the boom box.
- The Calamityville Horror: The objective includes having mortals discover two corpses. The walkthrough advises controlling fear so people remain available to find them, rather than simply driving everyone out.
- Summoners Not Included: Students need to discover a book and summon the Darkling while the professor is scared away. A broad scare can interfere with the students’ part of the puzzle.
- The Unusual Suspects: The walkthrough recommends unlocking Blue Murder before scaring off Norman Franz. It also warns that using a quake to free prisoners can destroy fetters you might otherwise use for binding.
These routes are examples from the community walkthrough, not official instructions. Their broader lesson is to compare a tactic against the objective, Plasm cost, risk of frightening away a required mortal, danger to haunters, and possible loss of useful fetters.

Edition matters for the finale
The original release’s finale and the additional “Class Of Spook’em High” level in Steam and GOG editions are not the same mission, according to the walkthrough. If your game does not match the Ice Cream Man route, first check which edition and level you are playing rather than assuming the instructions apply unchanged. The walkthrough currently indicates that its item has been removed from the community and is incompatible with the game; it remains readable, but its mission-specific details should be treated as version-sensitive.
