Then try restoring licenses if relevant, reinstalling the game, and rebuilding the database in Safe Mode. These are general PlayStation troubleshooting steps—not a confirmed fix for a known Ghost of Tsushima-specific defect. Avoid initializing the console unless other steps fail: initialization deletes console storage, so back up important data first.
First, identify what is crashing
Before changing settings, note what happens and when. Does the game close to the PS4 home screen, freeze, fail during launch, or shut down the whole console? Write down the exact error code and whether the problem occurs at the same point or after the same action each time. A repeatable description is useful for troubleshooting and for a support request.

Compare the problem across your setup without assuming any one symptom proves the cause:
- One game or several: Check whether other games also fail.
- Disc or digital: Note how you access the game; disc-reading problems and digital license issues call for different checks.
- Internal or USB extended storage: If the game is installed on USB storage, check that the drive is connected.
- Launch or gameplay: Record whether the crash happens while starting the game or after a particular in-game action.
- Application or console: Distinguish a game closing from the entire PS4 powering down.
These comparisons help describe the fault; they do not establish its cause by themselves.

Try the low-risk checks first
- Install available updates. Check for updates for the game and PS4 system software. PlayStation includes system software updates in its general game-start troubleshooting guidance.
- Fully restart the PS4. Restart the console, then try the game again.
- Confirm installation and storage. Make sure the game has finished installing. If it is installed on USB extended storage, verify that the drive is connected.
- If you use a disc, inspect it. Check that it is inserted correctly. If it needs cleaning, PlayStation advises removing it and wiping it with a soft, clean cloth. You can also test another game or disc to see whether the issue is limited to this one.
PlayStation’s game-start guidance covers updates, restarts, disc and extended-storage checks. Its PS4 disc troubleshooting page provides disc-specific steps.
Restore licenses if the game is digital or a license problem appears
If you own the game digitally, or the PS4 shows a lock or license-related problem, check that the console is using the account that purchased it and follow PlayStation’s instructions to restore licenses. PlayStation lists license restoration as a step in its guidance for game-start issues and the error code CE-41839-5. It is less relevant when the game is being played from a disc and no license issue is reported.

Reinstall the game if it still crashes
If the checks above do not help, delete the game and download it again. This is a general PlayStation troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed title-specific remedy. For CE-41839-5, PlayStation recommends using a wired internet connection for the download if possible. Ubisoft’s general PS4 technical troubleshooting guidance also includes confirming installation and reinstalling, but it does not diagnose Ghost of Tsushima.
Rebuild the PS4 database in Safe Mode
If reinstalling does not resolve the problem, rebuilding the database is another step in PlayStation’s general troubleshooting guidance for CE-41839-5 and disc issues. Follow PlayStation’s current Safe Mode instructions for your console before selecting the database rebuild option. Do not confuse that option with initialization: they are different actions, and initialization erases console storage.

Keep initialization and system-software reinstall as last resorts
PlayStation lists initialization or reinstalling system software as further escalation for persistent problems. Back up important console data before proceeding. PlayStation explicitly warns that initialization deletes information from console storage; it is not a routine first step or a guaranteed fix for this game. Review the warnings and instructions on the relevant game-start, disc troubleshooting, and CE-41839-5 support pages before choosing a destructive recovery option.

PlayStation describes CE-41839-5 as “An error occurred with the game/application.” That message identifies a game or application error; it does not, on its own, establish why Ghost of Tsushima crashed. Follow the progressive troubleshooting steps on PlayStation’s CE-41839-5 page rather than treating the code as a diagnosis.

Contact PlayStation Support or Repairs if multiple games fail, the console shuts down, discs are unreliable, or the steps above do not resolve the issue. PlayStation asks users reporting game-start problems to provide any error code or message, a detailed description, and steps to reproduce the issue; include a screenshot or video if possible. For persistent disc trouble, use PlayStation’s disc troubleshooting and repair guidance.
