Ghost of Yōtei DLC Settings to Change for Smoother Combat and Exploration

By VGSources Team 8 min read

Start with Enhanced Combat Cues and Projectile Indicator turned on. The first enlarges the glint that signals an enemy attack, while the second warns you about ranged attacks arriving from outside the camera view. Add Aim Assist if bow targeting feels imprecise, and enable Dark Flashes for Blind Bombs if bright effects are uncomfortable. For exploration, keep the interface restrained and add high contrast or other visual-comfort options only when they solve a visibility or comfort problem.

These settings change how clearly you read fights and how comfortably you look at the screen; they are not performance settings and should not be expected to increase frame rate.

The best starting setup for the DLC

The most useful baseline has two combat-visibility switches enabled and two personal-preference switches left to your needs:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Enhanced Combat Cues: On. PlayStation describes this as enlarging the glint attack visuals that signal when to parry or dodge.
  • Projectile Indicator: On. This adds a visual warning for ranged attacks coming from offscreen, which is especially valuable when several enemies are attacking at once.
  • Aim Assist: Optional. It auto-targets nearby enemies to improve ranged accuracy. Use it when manual bow or other ranged aiming is unreliable; leave it off if you want every shot to be aimed by hand.
  • Dark Flashes for Blind Bombs: Personal preference. The option replaces the bright flash with a dark-screen effect. It is a comfort choice rather than a combat advantage.

This combination preserves the game’s deliberately restrained presentation while making the danger signals that matter in a fight easier to see.

#1 Best Overall
Ghost of Yōtei PS5
  • Stunning graphics and gameplay, explore the wild and striking lands around Mount Yotei on foot or horseback. Travel picturesque parts of northern Japan through grasslands, snowy ridges, fields of wildflowers, and more.
  • Discover renegade combat, engage in lawless katana combat and battles with adversaires. Train with various sensei as you find and learn to use each new weapon.
  • An unconventional story and journey, take in the cultural beauty of Japan, bathe in an onsen, visit shrines to pray, try Sumi-e painting, and so much more.
  • Choose your weapon, battle Atsu's opponents as you see fit, with levelled-up dual katanas, odachi, kusarigama and other new weapons.

Combat settings, explained

Enhanced Combat Cues

Turn this on first if parries or dodges seem late, ambiguous, or difficult to spot. Ghost of Yōtei uses a glint to communicate an incoming attack; the enhanced version increases the size of that visual cue. A larger signal gives your eye more time to identify the attack without changing the underlying timing of the move.

It is most useful in crowded encounters, in poor visibility, or when the camera is pulled away by another enemy. It also suits players learning a new weapon or enemy type. If you already read every attack comfortably and prefer the smallest possible interface, you can turn it off later, but there is no reason to disable it while learning the DLC’s fights.

Projectile Indicator

Enable this when groups include archers or other ranged attackers. The indicator is designed for projectiles arriving from outside the current camera view, the attacks most likely to cause an apparently unavoidable hit. It does not replace positioning or blocking; it gives you a warning that lets you turn, move, or interrupt your current action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep it on for open-area fights and survival encounters where enemies can surround you. In a one-on-one duel with no ranged threat, it adds little and can be switched off for a cleaner screen.

Aim Assist

Aim Assist improves ranged accuracy by automatically targeting nearby enemies. It is not required for melee combat and has no meaningful role in a duel unless that encounter includes a ranged phase.

Choose it when you are using a bow frequently, playing from the sofa, or finding that small target movements make manual aiming inconsistent. Leave it off when precise manual control is part of the enjoyment, when you want to choose a target outside the assist’s selection, or when the automatic lock-on pulls your reticle away from the enemy you intended to hit. Because the official description presents it as an accuracy aid rather than a damage increase, it should be treated as a control preference, not a power upgrade.

Ghost of Yotei (PS5)
  • Discover a bold, new story of a warrior in Japan who is on her own mission of vengeance.
  • Set 300 years after the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yōtei is a standalone experience set in 1600s rural Japan. The story follows a haunted, lone mercenary named Atsu. Thirsty for revenge, she travels through the beautiful, rugged landscapes of northern Japan, hunting those who killed her family many years earlier.
  • Sixteen years after her family’s death, Atsu’s quest across Ezo brings her to unexplored lands in search of a gang of six outlaws, but she finds much more than vengeance. Throughout her journey, Atsu will discover unlikely allies, and greater bonds than she could have imagined.

Dark Flashes for Blind Bombs

Blind Bombs normally produce a bright flash. Turning on Dark Flashes for Blind Bombs changes that presentation to a dark-screen effect. Select it if repeated flashes cause eye strain, headaches, or discomfort, or if you simply prefer less intense effects.

The setting changes the visual effect, not the bomb’s gameplay function. Players who find the dark transition harder to read can leave it off and use the other visual-comfort controls instead.

Exploration settings for a clearer, less intrusive screen

Keep guidance sparse unless it solves a problem

Sucker Punch’s technical discussion of Ghost of Yōtei describes a design built around curiosity, longer sightlines, and less intrusive guidance. That makes a low-clutter exploration setup the natural default: retain the combat warnings you need, but do not add extra visual assistance merely because it is available.

In practice, keep Enhanced Combat Cues and Projectile Indicator available for fights, then avoid turning exploration into a constant layer of markers if you can already read the landscape. The goal is not to remove every aid; it is to reserve assistance for a specific issue such as losing the route, missing an interactable, or being unable to distinguish an important object from the background.

High-contrast accessibility

Sony announced a new high-contrast option in patch v2.0, alongside other quality-of-life changes. Use it when enemies, interactable objects, or environmental edges blend into the scene. High contrast can improve recognition in bright snow, dark interiors, fog, or scenes with strong color grading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because stronger contrast can make the image feel busier, start with it only when ordinary visibility is a problem. If it obscures the landscape or makes exploration less pleasant, turn it back off and rely on the smaller combat cues instead.

  • Go wild on the heights of iconic US national parks like Yosemite, Zion, and Bryce Canyon.

Visual comfort and 3D audio

The official store accessibility listing identifies visual-comfort support and 3D audio among the game’s accessibility features. Use the visual-comfort controls when camera movement, flashes, or other effects cause discomfort. Audio cues can complement a restrained interface by giving you another way to notice threats without adding more on-screen elements.

There is no single correct combination: a player who is comfortable with rapid camera motion may need only combat cues, while someone sensitive to motion or bright effects may benefit from several comfort options together.

Preset Settings Best for
Readable combat Enhanced Combat Cues On; Projectile Indicator On; Aim Assist On when using ranged weapons often; Dark Flashes On if bright effects are uncomfortable Players who want the clearest attack and projectile warnings in normal fights and group battles
Minimal-interface exploration Keep the two combat cues available; retain the game’s restrained guidance style; enable high contrast or visual-comfort options only when needed Players who want the landscape to remain dominant while preserving essential combat information
Duel practice Enhanced Combat Cues On; Projectile Indicator optional; Aim Assist irrelevant unless the encounter uses ranged attacks Learning parry and dodge timing in a focused one-on-one fight

These are recommendations based on the documented purpose of each toggle, not claims of a hands-on performance test.

How to choose between competing priorities

When two setups both seem plausible, compare them on three separate axes instead of asking which is universally “best.”

Combat readability

Ask whether you can identify an incoming attack before committing to your response. Enhanced Combat Cues addresses close-range attack tells, while Projectile Indicator covers threats outside the camera. If either kind of hit regularly surprises you, keep the relevant cue enabled.

Manual control

Aim Assist is the only baseline option that changes how targeting is performed. On favors consistency and quick target acquisition; off preserves fully manual aim. Decide according to whether the act of aiming is a challenge you want to solve or an obstacle that distracts from the encounter.

Visual comfort and interface density

Dark Flashes, high contrast, and other comfort options can make the game easier to look at, but each also changes the visual presentation. Add the smallest intervention that fixes your problem. If a screen effect is uncomfortable, change that effect first rather than enabling every available overlay.

DLC and patch context

The Complete Edition adds the Echoes of Sekigahara story expansion and Most Wanted, a single-player combat-survival mode. Sony scheduled those additions through patch v2.0 for October 1, 2026, globally, with October 2 in some territories. Check your region’s release information because the date can differ by one day.

The same patch announcement lists Beauty of Yōtei, new Watanabe Mode tracks that can be enabled throughout the game, the ability to keep one armor set’s appearance while using another set’s statistics, and the new high-contrast accessibility option. The appearance-and-stats feature is cosmetic customization; it does not replace the combat and visibility choices above.

Andrew Goldfarb, Senior Communications Manager at Sucker Punch Productions, described the release this way: “Ghost of Yōtei has been a labor of love for Sucker Punch, and we’re happy to have it out in the world for everyone to play.”

If you are buying the DLC rather than adding it to an existing copy, verify that your edition and region include the Complete Edition content. The store listing identifies Echoes of Sekigahara and Most Wanted as part of that edition, but availability and dates can vary by territory.

What these settings do not change

  • They do not provide a documented frame-rate increase or reduce loading times.
  • Enhanced Combat Cues enlarges an attack signal; it does not slow enemies or extend the parry window.
  • Projectile Indicator warns about offscreen ranged attacks; it does not make projectiles harmless.
  • Aim Assist improves targeting accuracy; it does not add damage according to the official description.
  • Dark Flashes changes the presentation of Blind Bombs; it does not remove the bomb’s gameplay effect.
  • High contrast and visual-comfort options improve visibility or tolerance for certain effects, not character statistics.

That distinction matters when troubleshooting. If a fight remains difficult after the cues are visible, the next step is learning spacing, timing, and enemy patterns rather than searching for a hidden performance boost.

Troubleshooting common problems

“I still miss parry cues.”

Confirm that Enhanced Combat Cues is enabled, then test the same enemy in a quiet encounter. Crowded fights can hide a cue behind another animation, so reposition to keep the attacker in view. If the signal is visible but your response is late, practice the enemy’s timing; the setting changes visibility, not timing.

“I keep getting hit by arrows from nowhere.”

Turn on Projectile Indicator and scan for the warning before committing to a long attack animation. In group fights, move toward cover or rotate the camera so the ranged enemy enters view. The indicator is most valuable precisely because the attacker may not be on screen.

“Aim Assist keeps selecting the wrong target.”

Switch it off for encounters where target choice matters more than speed. Manual aim is the better fit when nearby enemies frequently compete for the same lock-on or when you need to shoot a specific target outside the assist’s preferred range.

“Blind Bombs are uncomfortable.”

Enable Dark Flashes for Blind Bombs and reassess after several encounters. If the dark effect is less comfortable than the original flash, disable it and use the broader visual-comfort options instead.

“The world looks too busy.”

Return to the minimal-interface exploration setup. Keep only the cues that solve a demonstrated combat problem, and enable high contrast only when ordinary contrast is insufficient. Ghost of Yōtei’s exploration design intentionally relies on sightlines and curiosity, so fewer overlays can be the more faithful and more readable choice.

Recommended final setup

For most players entering the DLC, use Enhanced Combat Cues and Projectile Indicator, decide on Aim Assist according to your preferred level of manual control, and treat Dark Flashes as a comfort switch. Explore with the interface as restrained as possible, adding high contrast or other visual-comfort options only when visibility or physical comfort requires them. This gives you the clearest combat information without covering up the landscapes that the game is designed to make you investigate.
