Ghost of Yōtei is a visually striking PS5 action adventure whose fluid, weapon-switching combat gives its revenge story a visceral edge. Its landscapes and atmosphere are standout strengths, but the open-world activities will feel familiar to some players—and the freedom to pursue targets in different orders can make the story feel uneven. The Complete Edition now adds several modes and story content, with some related features also available to owners of the original game through a patch.
What kind of game is Ghost of Yōtei?
Ghost of Yōtei is a standalone PS5 open-world action adventure set in 17th-century Ezo, starring Atsu, a mercenary on a journey of vengeance. It is not a direct continuation of Jin Sakai’s story: Sony describes it as a new chapter set roughly 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima. Sony’s launch announcement frames Atsu’s story as one of healing and redemption as well as vengeance; that is the developer’s description, rather than a critical consensus.

How do the world and exploration hold up?
The setting is one of the game’s clearest strengths in both reviews. TechRadar praises its world, map, and environmental discovery, while Tom’s Guide describes the presentation as cinematic and visually striking. These are reviewers’ impressions, not objective measures, but they point to the same appeal: the landscape is more than a backdrop, and time spent travelling and looking around is part of the experience.
The trade-off is an open-world structure that may seem recognizable. TechRadar notes recurring activities and familiar elements in the formula; Tom’s Guide likewise finds routine genre conventions. Players who enjoy exploring a large world and taking on optional activities may welcome that structure. Anyone hoping for a radical rethink of open-world design should temper expectations.

What is combat like?
Combat is built around variety and movement rather than relying on a single weapon. TechRadar describes five melee weapons available when fully equipped and encounters that flow through parries, attacks, weapon swaps, and dodges. That combination gives fights a tactile, shifting rhythm, and the reviewer saw the game as a varied evolution of the earlier game’s formula.
The violence is graphic, so the bloody presentation is part of the experience rather than a decorative flourish. Sony also highlights DualSense features in its launch announcement. A standard DualSense controller is the intended accessory; no special controller is required.

The freedom to pursue select members of the Yōtei Six in different orders is a point of disagreement between player choice and narrative flow. Tom’s Guide argues that this flexibility can make the story feel disjointed, because events do not always build in one fixed sequence. That is a reviewer’s criticism, not a claim that every player will experience the story the same way. TechRadar’s review is more positive about how the game varies its predecessor’s formula, while still noting familiar design elements.
Which edition should you buy?
The original game and the Complete Edition are not identical packages. The Complete Edition includes the base game, the Echoes of Sekigahara story expansion, Most Wanted, and Ghost of Yōtei Legends. Sony’s August 2026 announcement said Echoes of Sekigahara and Most Wanted were scheduled to arrive by patch on October 1, 2026, or October 2 in some territories. Its announced U.S. price was $69.99, with a $14.99 upgrade for owners of the original game; these are time- and region-sensitive figures, so check your local listing before buying. Not every feature mentioned alongside the Complete Edition is exclusive to that purchase. The same announcement says patch 2.0 makes Beauty of Yōtei, Watanabe Mode tracks, armor appearance/stat separation, and a high-contrast accessibility option available to existing owners. The official PlayStation Store listing identifies the Complete Edition as a PS5 game. It also says online play and multiplayer require an internet connection, a PlayStation account, and PlayStation Plus. Availability and pricing can vary by territory and change over time.

- Play it if you want a strikingly atmospheric setting, an action adventure built around varied melee combat, and room to explore at your own pace.
- Be cautious if you are tired of familiar open-world activities or prefer a tightly ordered narrative over choosing the sequence of major targets.
- Choose the Complete Edition if you want the base game alongside the added story expansion and modes; if you already own the original, compare the upgrade listing with the features available through the shared patch.
