Choose Ghost of Yōtei if you want a newer PS5 adventure with a new protagonist, a wider range of weapons, and more freedom over the order of major hunts. Choose Ghost of Tsushima if you want Jin Sakai’s story during the 1274 Mongol invasion, combat built around katana stances, or a game available across PS4, PS5, and PC.
Although Yōtei is set centuries after Tsushima, it is a standalone story—not a direct continuation of Jin’s plot. Here’s how their settings, stories, combat, platforms, and editions compare.

Are the stories connected?
Ghost of Tsushima follows Jin Sakai
Ghost of Tsushima is set during the Mongol invasion of Japan in 1274. Its story follows Jin Sakai as he fights to defend Tsushima Island. PlayStation’s account of the premise is available in its 2018 Ghost of Tsushima gameplay announcement.

- Stunning graphics and gameplay, explore the wild and striking lands around Mount Yotei on foot or horseback. Travel picturesque parts of northern Japan through grasslands, snowy ridges, fields of wildflowers, and more.
- Discover renegade combat, engage in lawless katana combat and battles with adversaires. Train with various sensei as you find and learn to use each new weapon.
- An unconventional story and journey, take in the cultural beauty of Japan, bathe in an onsen, visit shrines to pray, try Sumi-e painting, and so much more.
- Choose your weapon, battle Atsu's opponents as you see fit, with levelled-up dual katanas, odachi, kusarigama and other new weapons.
Ghost of Yōtei introduces Atsu
Ghost of Yōtei takes place roughly 300 years later, in 1600s rural Japan, and follows Atsu on a journey of revenge and healing. Sony describes the game as a standalone story; Jin does not appear in it. You do not need to finish Tsushima to follow Yōtei. Sony’s announcement of Ghost of Yōtei establishes its setting and time gap, while Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Yōtei FAQ addresses its standalone status.
The emotional premise also differs. Studio head Brian Fleming characterized Yōtei as “a story of healing and redemption that runs deeper than vengeance,” told through a new hero. That is the studio’s description of its intended story, not an independent verdict on which game is more affecting.

- Discover a bold, new story of a warrior in Japan who is on her own mission of vengeance.
- Set 300 years after the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yōtei is a standalone experience set in 1600s rural Japan. The story follows a haunted, lone mercenary named Atsu. Thirsty for revenge, she travels through the beautiful, rugged landscapes of northern Japan, hunting those who killed her family many years earlier.
- Sixteen years after her family’s death, Atsu’s quest across Ezo brings her to unexplored lands in search of a gang of six outlaws, but she finds much more than vengeance. Throughout her journey, Atsu will discover unlikely allies, and greater bonds than she could have imagined.
Which game has the better combat?
Pick Tsushima for katana stances and stealth
Tsushima emphasizes katana combat, stance changes, the bow, and stealth. Its approach is a natural fit if you want sword fights and tactical choices about how to approach enemies. PlayStation’s combat overview describes the game’s combat design.
Pick Yōtei for a wider weapon selection
Yōtei’s official materials emphasize new weapons, weapon sensei, bounties, and choosing the order of major hunts. That points to a broader set of combat options and more flexibility in how you pursue targets. It is a difference in emphasis, not proof that one system is universally better. See Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Yōtei gameplay details for the studio’s description.

Which setting and protagonist should you choose?
Choose based on the period and character you most want to spend time with. Tsushima offers Jin’s story amid the 1274 invasion; Yōtei follows Atsu in Ezo centuries later. The later setting is not a sequel-era version of Jin’s journey: it is a new story with its own lead and premise.
Sucker Punch co-founder and studio head Brian Fleming described Yōtei as a story of healing and redemption as well as vengeance. If Atsu’s journey and the 1600s setting sound more appealing, you can start there without treating Tsushima as required background.

Which game can you play on your platform?
Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut is available on PS4 and PS5, and Sony announced a PC edition. Sony’s PC release announcement says the Director’s Cut includes the full game, the Iki Island expansion, and Legends mode.
Ghost of Yōtei launched on October 2, 2025, as a PS5 exclusive, with PS5 Pro support. Sucker Punch’s FAQ says it is not available on PS4. If you do not own a PS5, Tsushima is the practical choice from these two.

Which edition should you compare?
Compare editions that include the content you want, rather than assuming each game is sold as a single package. For Tsushima, Director’s Cut is the relevant edition when you want Iki Island; Sony’s PC announcement also specifies Legends mode for that PC edition.
The US PlayStation Store currently lists Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition at $69.99 USD. Its listed contents are the base game, the Echoes of Sekigahara story expansion, Most Wanted survival mode, and Legends co-op. Legends online multiplayer requires PlayStation Plus. Store price and contents can change, so check the listing before buying: US PlayStation Store: Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition. Sony’s Complete Edition announcement gives the planned global patch date as October 1, 2026, and October 2 in some territories.
So, which game is better for you?
- Choose Ghost of Yōtei for Atsu’s standalone story, its 1600s Ezo setting, expanded weapon options, and freedom to choose the order of major hunts—provided you have a PS5.
- Choose Ghost of Tsushima for Jin Sakai’s invasion-era story, katana-and-stance combat, or access on PS4, PS5, or PC.
- If you are deciding between editions, check whether you want Iki Island in Tsushima or the additional modes and expansion listed in Yōtei Complete Edition.
One pre-release perspective is worth keeping in proportion: Tom’s Guide reviewer Rory Mellon praised Yōtei’s cinematic visuals while criticizing the familiarity of its open-world formula in a review published September 25, 2025. That is one critic’s view, published before release—not a consensus or a direct comparison proving either game is better. Read the Tom’s Guide review if that trade-off matters to you.
