What does “multiplayer” mean in each edition?

Mad Dog Games’ Steam listing describes “The single player campaign” and labels the product single-player: Steam store page. The US PlayStation listing likewise identifies one player. Buying the remaster without mods therefore does not provide online co-op or a built-in split-screen menu.
RetroPulse03’s 2-Player and Female Rookie mod changes that on Steam. Uploaded October 23, 2026, it requires gbhook, adds a second-player controller input, supports drop-in/drop-out play and offers a female Rookie option. The creator states, “I promise that you will run into issues.” Treat it as an experimental user modification: there is no official matchmaking, no publisher support and no evidence that it works on consoles, the original Windows release or Epic.
Original realistic edition: historical multiplayer content
The original game’s Xbox 360-era material included multiplayer jobs. The indexed Prima strategy guide has a dedicated “Multiplayer Jobs” section and Xbox 360 references, which establishes what the original console release was designed to contain.
That documentation is historical, not a service-status report. gbhook is a user-managed modification, not an official game mode. Its description says achievements are disabled while it is installed. Keep an unmodified installation or a backup of your files if achievements or troubleshooting convenience matter to you.

Likewise, the presence of gbhook in an installation does not mean that every mod using the framework will coexist safely with every other mod.
How do you install the Steam split-screen mod?

The manager’s changelog records Epic gbhook support beginning at version 0.4.1. That tells you the framework can target an Epic installation; it does not port Steam-only code, custom levels or multiplayer logic automatically. Before switching stores, read the individual mod’s requirements and compatibility notes.
How should you troubleshoot a failed mod launch?
