PlayStation describes CE-34878-0 as “An error occurred with the game/application.” That message does not identify a specific cause, and Sony currently lists this code in its PS4 error-code section—not as a PS5 error code. Start by updating the game and console software and restarting; then follow the steps for your disc or digital copy. If the error also affects other games or appears immediately at launch, Sony advises contacting PlayStation Repairs.
What CE-34878-0 means for God of War Ragnarök
The code is a general game or application error, not a diagnosis of a failed component. Sony’s code-specific guidance is for PS4. Its separate freeze-and-crash guide covers both PS5 and PS4, but the sources do not establish a Ragnarök-specific cause or fix for CE-34878-0. If the code appears on your PS5, note exactly what the console displays and use PlayStation’s official support for your platform; the available guidance does not explain why a PS5 player might see this particular code.
Santa Monica Studio maintains an official God of War support hub and a patch-note index. Those pages do not establish a specific fix for this error, so do not assume that a particular Ragnarök bug or patch is responsible.
Start with updates and a restart
- Close God of War Ragnarök, then restart the console.
- Check for and install available console system software updates and game updates. Sony lists updating both and restarting among its first steps for CE-34878-0. On PS4, Sony also mentions disconnecting a PlayStation Camera and disabling Face Recognition if those features apply to your setup.
If your PS4’s hard drive was replaced, Sony’s code-specific guidance says to reinstall the original HDD. This is a conditional check for consoles with a replaced drive, not a general recommendation to buy or replace a hard drive.

Choose the steps for your copy of the game
If you have the disc version
- Wipe the disc with a clean, soft cloth.
- Check for game and system software updates.
- Try another disc in the console. If other discs work but the Ragnarök disc does not, Sony recommends contacting the retailer about replacement.
- If the error continues, reinstall the game from the disc.
If you have the digital version
- Confirm the game finished downloading and installing.
- Check for game and system software updates.
- If the error continues, delete the game and download and install it again.
These are Sony’s general disc-game and digital-game troubleshooting steps; they are not confirmed Ragnarök-specific fixes.
Test whether the save is involved
PlayStation suggests starting the game from the beginning without the existing save as a diagnostic check. Preserve or back up your save before trying anything that could affect it. If the game works without that save, the result may help narrow down the issue, but it does not by itself identify the cause.

Know when to contact PlayStation
Sony directs players to PlayStation Repairs if CE-34878-0 keeps happening with multiple games or applications, or if it appears immediately after an application starts. A failure limited to Ragnarök is a reason to work through the game-specific checks above; the code alone does not prove that the console has a hardware fault.

PlayStation says initializing a PS4 erases all data in console storage and advises backing up first. It is not an early troubleshooting step: consider it only after less destructive options, and make a backup before proceeding. Sony’s escalation criteria above are a reason to seek support rather than assume initialization will solve the problem.
