Choose GOG if your priority is a DRM-free downloaded copy, optional use of its launcher, offline single-player access, backup installers, and the ability to use an available older build. Choose Steam if you prefer a single client that manages ownership checks, downloads, updates, cloud-connected features, and a large unified library. Steam Offline Mode can work, but it requires preparation while connected and cannot bypass a game that needs an online server or a separate launcher.
The refund rules are also materially different: GOG’s voluntary policy allows a request within 30 days, including after downloading and playing, while Steam’s standard game rule is 14 days from purchase and less than two hours played. Both policies have exceptions, abuse safeguards, and jurisdiction-specific statutory rights, so treat these as platform rules rather than guarantees for every title.

What is the practical DRM difference between GOG and Steam?
GOG’s defining promise is DRM-free access to a downloaded copy, while Steam supplies a client and account-based ownership check that may be combined with a game’s own protections. DRM and internet access are related but not identical: a DRM-free game can still require servers for multiplayer, and a Steam game may work offline after preparation if its own requirements allow it.
What GOG means by DRM-free
GOG says its catalog is DRM-free and that the single-player mode of a game must be accessible offline. You can obtain the game through the GALAXY client or, where provided, download standalone installers and keep backup copies. The promise concerns the access mechanism for the copy; it does not transfer copyright, guarantee that an online service will remain available, or remove a game’s server requirement for multiplayer and other connected features. How Steam’s DRM can work
Valve documents a Steam ownership-checking DRM wrapper that developers can use, including alongside other DRM systems. Its presence in Steam’s tools does not mean every game uses the wrapper or has the same third-party restrictions. A title may still require a publisher account, an external launcher, an always-online check or a server for a particular mode, so the game’s store disclosures matter more than the platform name alone.
What “ownership” means on each service
“Buying” a digital game does not mean acquiring the underlying intellectual property. Valve’s Steam Subscriber Agreement states that content and services are licensed, not sold, and that a Steam account is needed; the client and an internet connection may be required. A more accurate comparison is how much control you have over a playable downloaded copy, not whether either platform grants unlimited legal ownership.

Can I play GOG games without GOG GALAXY?
Usually, yes for supported single-player games: GOG says GALAXY is optional for accessing offline single-player mode, and its downloadable installers can be archived as backups. The individual listing still controls what happens to multiplayer, events, leaderboards, authentication and other connected functions.
Using a standalone installer
- Sign in to your GOG account in a browser and open your library or the game’s download area.
- Download the game installer files and any required language packs or updates offered for that title.
- Store the files on a second location, such as a portable external SSD or a smaller USB flash drive, and keep enough free space for the installer plus the installed game.
- Install while online if the game has prerequisites or a first-run component, then disconnect and test the single-player executable before relying on it during travel or an outage.
A local copy protects against losing access to a downloaded installer, but it cannot recreate a multiplayer server, timed event or other service that the game itself contacts. Check the game’s current store page for those requirements before deleting the launcher or assuming every mode is offline-capable.
Using GALAXY without surrendering offline access
GALAXY can install and update games, but GOG’s policy does not make the client a prerequisite for supported offline single-player play. Keeping GALAXY installed is useful when you want automatic updates or integrated library management; removing it is reasonable when you want a self-contained installation and have already saved the required installers.

Does Steam work without an internet connection?
Steam Offline Mode works only when the client and the game have been prepared online. Valve’s instructions require remembered credentials, fully updated files and an initial launch check; an online-required game or one that invokes an external launcher will not become playable merely because Steam is switched offline.

- Connect to the internet and start Steam. Make sure the account can sign in and that the client is allowed to remember credentials on that computer.
- Let Steam finish downloading client updates and every game update. A pending download can prevent the intended build from launching later.
- Launch each game you plan to use and reach its main menu or other point that completes first-run setup. This reveals prerequisite installers, publisher sign-ins and external-launcher requirements while you still have a connection.
- Exit the game, open the Steam menu and choose Go Offline. Confirm the restart or offline prompt, then close and reopen Steam once to verify that the library and intended game appear without a connection.
- Test the specific single-player mode with networking disabled. If it fails at this stage, it will not be dependable during the trip or outage.
Valve’s current preparation guidance is in its Steam Offline Mode FAQ. Offline Mode also pauses client and game updates. Reconnecting later allows normal downloads, but the offline session itself cannot fetch a missing patch, entitlement check or launcher component.
Why an apparently single-player Steam game can fail offline
- The game performs an online entitlement or server check at launch.
- A separate publisher launcher is required and has not been placed in its own offline state.
- The first launch, shader preparation or redistributable installation was never completed while connected.
- The game was updated on another computer, but the offline machine still has an older or incomplete file set.
- The feature you want is technically part of a connected service, such as cloud-backed progression, a live event or online matchmaking.
Steam’s Offline Mode is therefore a preparation feature, not a way to remove DRM or convert an online game into an offline one.
How do GOG and Steam handle updates and older versions?
GOG gives more visible control when a game has versions listed for rollback: GALAXY can disable automatic updating and let you select an available earlier build for an installed game. Steam is designed to distribute the current build through its client, and Valve tells developers that installed players may need to download an update before launching again.
GOG’s update controls
- Install the game in GALAXY and open that game’s settings or management panel.
- Turn off automatic updates if you need a stable build for a mod, a compatibility setup or a long offline period.
- Open the version or rollback control and select an earlier build only if GOG lists one for that title.
- Record the selected version and preserve the installer or backup before changing it, because a later reinstall may otherwise use the current offer.
The rollback feature is documented in GOG’s support article. “Available” is the important qualification: GOG does not promise that every historical build of every game remains selectable.

Steam’s current-build model
Steam normally keeps the installed copy aligned with the build distributed through its client. Developers can publish updates that require an existing installation to download files before the next launch, so an update can interrupt a carefully preserved offline setup. Steam does not provide a universal promise that every previous build will remain available to every player; any branch or version option depends on what the developer publishes.
Which platform suits a modded or fixed-version installation?
GOG is the more predictable choice when the title actually exposes a rollback build and you want to stop automatic updates. Steam can still be appropriate when a developer maintains a beta or legacy branch, but that availability is title-specific. Before committing to a long-lived mod setup, check the game’s version controls, mod documentation and launcher requirements rather than assuming the platform’s normal update behavior will preserve compatibility.
Can I refund a game after downloading or playing it?
GOG’s voluntary refund window is broader for ordinary game purchases: a request can be made within 30 days even after download and play, subject to safeguards against abuse and the policy’s exceptions. Steam’s standard game rule is narrower—request within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours played—although Valve says it will consider requests submitted outside those conditions.
GOG refund process and limits

- Select the relevant order and choose the refund-request option.
- Choose the offered destination, such as GOG Wallet funds or the original payment method, where the policy allows it.
- Submit the request with the purchase details and wait for the decision; do not assume that downloading or playing automatically guarantees approval.
The current policy is described in GOG’s Voluntary Refund Policy. GOG introduced the 30-day offer in a February 2020 announcement, but the present support rules and their exceptions control the request. Individual abusive patterns can be refused, and a wallet-credit outcome may be offered in some cases.

- Open Steam Support and sign in to the account that made the purchase.
- Select the game or transaction from the purchase list and choose the refund path.
- State the reason and select an eligible return destination if the request is approved.
- Keep the confirmation until the money or Steam Wallet credit arrives.
Valve’s Steam Refunds page, last updated April 23, 2024, identifies the 14-day and under-two-hour thresholds for standard game refunds. An approved refund goes to a supported original payment method or Steam Wallet. A key purchased outside Steam is not refunded by Valve, because that transaction was not made through the Steam store.

Purchase types that need separate checking
Do not automatically apply the base-game rule to downloadable content, preorders, Early Access purchases, gifts or Steam Wallet funds. Each has its own subsection or condition, and local consumer law can add rights beyond a platform’s voluntary offer. Read the applicable policy for the exact transaction and region before treating a request as routine.
What should I check on a game’s store page?
The platform label is only the first filter. Use the title’s own listing and support information to verify the mode, launcher, version and refund details before buying.
- Offline scope: confirm that the exact single-player mode, not merely the game, works without a server.
- External accounts: look for a publisher account, separate launcher or first-run sign-in.
- Version control: check whether GOG lists rollback builds or Steam lists a beta or legacy branch.
- Connected content: identify multiplayer, timed events, leaderboards, cloud features and online progression that will disappear offline.
- Purchase channel: note whether the transaction is a base game, DLC, preorder, gift, wallet top-up or a key bought elsewhere.
- Regional terms: verify currency, payment method and statutory withdrawal or refund rights for your jurisdiction.

Choose GOG when offline independence is the priority
- You want a DRM-free downloaded copy for a primarily single-player game.
- You expect to play where internet access is unreliable and do not want a launcher to be required.
- You want to keep installers on an external SSD or flash drive for reinstalls.
- You need to pause automatic updates or use a listed earlier build.
- You value a 30-day voluntary refund request window, while accepting its abuse safeguards and exceptions.
Choose Steam when centralized management matters more
- You want one client to manage a large library, downloads and update scheduling.
- Your games depend on Steam features, multiplayer services or a developer-maintained branch.
- You are comfortable preparing Offline Mode before travel and checking external-launcher requirements.
- You normally decide quickly enough to fit the 14-day, under-two-hour standard refund rule.
Use both without assuming their rules transfer
A game available on both stores can have different installers, launchers, build options and refund treatment. Compare the exact edition and the mode you intend to play; a DRM-free GOG release does not make its Steam counterpart DRM-free, and Steam’s refund thresholds do not apply to a GOG order.

Steam says the game cannot start offline
Reconnect, finish every client and game update, launch the title once, complete any external-launcher sign-in, then select Go Offline again. If the game still requests a server, treat that mode as online-required rather than repeatedly reinstalling Steam.

A GOG backup installs but a feature is missing
Separate the local single-player executable from connected functions. Verify whether the missing feature depends on multiplayer servers, a timed event or another service; a backup preserves files, not the service behind them.
An update broke a mod or compatibility setup
On GOG, disable automatic updates and use a listed rollback build if one exists. On Steam, inspect the title’s published branches and developer instructions; do not assume an undocumented historical build can be restored.

Check the purchase date, playtime, transaction type, payment destination and region-specific terms. GOG and Steam both retain discretion or exceptions, and statutory rights may still apply independently of the voluntary platform offer.
What does the evidence support—and what does it not?
Official platform documentation supports a policy comparison, not a reliability score or approval-rate ranking. No independent adoption, uptime or comparative refund-approval statistic establishes that one service is universally more dependable. The defensible conclusion is narrower: GOG offers more control over a DRM-free offline copy when the title supports it, while Steam offers a centralized client with an offline mode that must be prepared and cannot override a game’s online dependencies.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does DRM-free mean a GOG multiplayer game will work forever?
No. DRM-free describes the access check for the downloaded software, not the continued operation of matchmaking, authentication, leaderboards or other servers. A game can remain installable and playable offline while its online features depend on services that may change.
Can Steam Offline Mode bypass a publisher’s separate launcher?
No. Valve specifically warns that games using an external launcher may not work in Offline Mode. Complete that launcher’s own setup while connected, and verify the title itself supports offline play before disconnecting.
Are DLC, gifts and wallet funds covered by the same refund rule as a Steam game?
Not automatically. Steam gives those purchase types separate conditions, so the standard 14-day and under-two-hour game rule should not be applied without checking the relevant subsection.
What if local consumer law gives me more refund rights?
