Choose GOG if DRM-free single-player access, downloadable installers, and dependable offline play matter most. Choose Steam if the specific game, Steam-only multiplayer or community tools, a larger historical catalog, or Steam’s account ecosystem is more important. There is no universal winner: the right storefront can change from one game to the next. Check the exact edition, included DLC, online requirements, launcher needs, regional price, controller support, and refund terms before you pay.
GOG and Steam also sell different kinds of access. GOG requires releases on its store to be DRM-free and publishes offline installers, while Steam is built around an account and subscription service. Those differences affect what happens when you are offline, replace a computer, use mods, or want to preserve a game years from now.

GOG emphasizes DRM-free distribution and direct downloads; Steam emphasizes a connected account, a large catalog, and platform services. Both can install and update PC games, but they do not provide identical licenses, clients, multiplayer features, or offline behavior.
GOG’s model
GOG’s developer documentation states that its “DRM-Free” philosophy means games released on the store cannot include DRM or copy-protection systems. GOG also hosts downloadable installers and bonus content on its website. Its Galaxy client is described as an optional gaming client rather than a requirement for every supported game.

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Steam’s model
Steam distributes games through personal accounts and subscriptions. Valve’s agreement treats accounts and subscriptions as personal and generally non-transferable. Steam does not make a store-wide DRM-free promise in the cited agreement, so protection, launcher requirements, and offline behavior vary by title and publisher.
Is GOG really DRM-free?
Yes, for games released on GOG under its store policy: the platform’s developer documentation says those releases cannot contain DRM or copy protection. That is a store-level requirement, not a promise that every game has identical technical behavior.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDRM-free means the game does not require a license check or copy-protection layer to validate the executable. A game can still have an account-based online mode, server-side progression, anti-cheat, or other network-dependent services. Removing DRM does not make an online game playable when its servers are unavailable.
What DRM-free does not guarantee
- Every multiplayer mode will work without an internet connection.
- Cloud saves, friends lists, achievements, crossplay, or matchmaking will be available without Galaxy or the game’s servers.
- Every future update will be delivered automatically if you use only a downloaded installer.
- A GOG purchase will create a license on another storefront.
Can I play GOG games offline?
For games designed to support offline play, GOG’s documentation says they should work without Galaxy authentication, without the Galaxy client being present, and without an internet connection. You can download the installer from GOG’s website, keep a local copy, and install the game later.
How to install a GOG game without Galaxy
- Sign in to the GOG website in a browser and open your library.
- Choose the game and download its offline installer files. Download any separate language packs, patches, or bonus content you want to keep.
- Store the files on a drive you control. Large games may require several installer parts, so keep all parts in the same folder.
- Run the installer on the target PC and follow the setup prompts. No Galaxy sign-in is needed for the offline-capable portion of the game.
- Test the game once while offline before travelling or disconnecting permanently. This catches title-specific requirements such as an online-only mode or a separate launcher.
Offline installers make GOG practical for archival use and machines with unreliable connections. They also put update management in your hands: if you do not use Galaxy, you must download newer installers or patches yourself when they are released.
What still needs an internet connection?
Online multiplayer, matchmaking, social services, server-authoritative progression, and other network features remain connectivity-dependent. Galaxy can add convenience around those features, but it cannot make a game’s external servers work offline.
Do I need GOG Galaxy or the Steam client?
GOG Galaxy is optional for supported downloads, updates, and offline play. Steam’s platform model is account-based, so Steam access and the Steam service are part of the normal ownership and installation path.

What Galaxy adds
GOG describes Galaxy as an optional client for installing and updating games. Depending on the title, it can provide cloud saves, achievements, update rollback, a combined library, friends features, and supported crossplay. These are not universal switches: each game determines which Galaxy features it implements.
What happens if you avoid Galaxy?
You can use the website’s offline installers for supported games and launch the installed executable directly. You give up client conveniences such as automatic updates, cloud synchronization, and the Galaxy interface unless the game or another tool supplies an alternative. Keep local backups of saves if you are not using cloud storage.
Steam client dependence
Steam games are tied to a Steam account and the subscriptions associated with it. Individual games can impose additional launcher, authentication, or online requirements. Read the game’s store description and documentation rather than assuming that every Steam title behaves the same way offline.

Which platform has better features?
GOG’s advantage is control over installers and the option to use Galaxy only when its extras are useful. Steam’s advantage is the breadth of its connected ecosystem, but the relevant features still depend on the exact game.
| Comparison point | GOG | Steam |
|---|---|---|
| DRM policy | GOG developer documentation requires releases to be DRM-free. | No store-wide DRM-free promise is established by the cited Valve agreement; requirements vary by title. |
| Offline access | Website-hosted offline installers; supported offline-capable play is designed to work without Galaxy authentication, the client, or internet. | Title-specific; Steam account and service requirements apply, so verify the individual game. |
| Client requirement | Galaxy is optional for supported downloads and offline play. | Steam account and service access are part of the platform model. |
| Cloud and social tools | Galaxy may provide cloud saves, rollback, achievements, library and friends aggregation, and supported crossplay. | Features depend on the game and Steam services. |
| Refund baseline | GOG advertises a full-refund policy within 30 days, subject to its current User Agreement and local law. | Generally a request within 14 days and under two hours of playtime for games, subject to exceptions. |
| Catalog positioning | Curated selection; the cited official material does not provide a current catalog count. | Historically much larger; the available comparison was published in 2018 and is not a current count. |
| Access model | DRM-free installers change practical access, but purchases remain governed by GOG terms. | Valve describes access as subscriptions and accounts as personal. |
Which store has the better refund policy?
On the advertised time window, GOG is more generous: it promotes full refunds within 30 days. Steam’s standard rule for games is a refund request within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. Both policies have exceptions, and the applicable User Agreement or local statutory rights control the final decision.
Steam’s standard rule
Valve’s Steam Refunds policy, updated April 23, 2024, says the offer applies to games and software applications when the request is made within two weeks of purchase and playtime is below two hours. The page also says you can request a refund for nearly any purchase for any reason, but the standard time and play limits remain the practical baseline for games.
GOG’s advertised rule
GOG’s current About material, accessed October 25, 2026, advertises a 30-day full-refund policy. Eligibility details are controlled by the current GOG User Agreement and applicable local law, so do not treat the headline window as an unconditional guarantee for every purchase type or circumstance.

How to use the difference
If you are uncertain about compatibility, the longer GOG window gives more calendar time to identify problems, provided the purchase qualifies under the agreement. On Steam, test a game promptly and track playtime; waiting beyond two weeks or playing for two hours can move a request outside the standard rule.
Do you actually own games bought on GOG or Steam?
You buy an access right governed by the store’s terms, not the game’s copyright. Neither storefront transfers copyright ownership of the software to the customer.
GOG access
DRM-free installers give you more practical control over installation and preservation, but the transaction is still governed by GOG’s User Agreement. A local installer is evidence of a usable copy; it is not a transfer of the underlying intellectual-property rights.
Steam access
Valve describes Steam accounts and subscriptions as personal and generally non-transferable. If you lose access to the account, the subscription relationship is the issue, even if game files remain on a drive. Do not assume that a family member, buyer, or estate can simply take over the account under the same terms.

- Keep account credentials secure and preserve purchase records.
- Do not interpret a downloaded executable as permission to redistribute it.
- Check the store’s current terms before planning an inheritance, account sale, or business transfer.
Does Steam have more games than GOG?
Steam has historically had a much larger catalog, but the often-quoted comparison available for this subject was published in 2018. Its counts are historical and should not be presented as current statistics. GOG’s official material identifies more than 1,000 partners, while no current official catalog count is established in the cited sources.
The useful question is therefore not “which store has the bigger number?” but “where is the exact edition I want?” A title may appear on one store only, or have different publishers, languages, DLC bundles, patches, multiplayer implementations, or controller support on each storefront.
Which store is better for single-player and archival gaming?
GOG is the stronger fit when you want a single-player library that can be installed from local files without a mandatory client or recurring authentication check. Its offline installers also help when you expect to change computers, travel without reliable internet, or preserve a game beyond the lifespan of a storefront client.

Before relying on that advantage, confirm that the edition you are buying is genuinely offline-capable. A game can be DRM-free while still reserving multiplayer, leaderboards, cloud saves, or other services for an online connection.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Which store is better for multiplayer and community features?
Steam is often the safer first check when the game’s community, matchmaking, or Steam-specific service is central to how you play. GOG Galaxy can support crossplay and social features, but its developer documentation describes crossplay as Galaxy-specific, and implementation is decided per game.
Read the exact store page for platform compatibility, required accounts, server status information, controller support, and whether friends or matchmaking use a shared network. A game’s presence on both stores does not prove that its multiplayer populations, save systems, or feature sets are identical.
How should I compare the same game before buying?
Use this checklist for every title that is sold on both storefronts:
- Match the edition. Compare standard, deluxe, complete, and bundled editions rather than comparing only the base-game name.
- List the included DLC. Confirm which expansions, soundtracks, art books, and bonus items are included in each package.
- Check online requirements. Look for multiplayer, account sign-in, anti-cheat, launcher, and server dependencies.
- Check offline behavior. On GOG, look for offline installers and confirm that the modes you use are offline-capable. On Steam, read the title’s requirements and documentation.
- Compare feature support. Verify cloud saves, achievements, rollback, crossplay, controller support, mod compatibility, and community tools for that game—not for the store in general.
- Compare the final regional price. Include taxes, bundles, currency conversion, and whether a discount is temporary.
- Read the applicable refund terms. Use the store’s current policy and agreement, not an old forum post or a remembered rule.
- Choose the account you intend to keep. Purchases generally stay with the account that made them, and a GOG purchase should not be assumed to produce a Steam key.
Should you use both GOG and Steam?
Yes. Using both is sensible when your priorities differ by game. You can keep DRM-free, offline-friendly single-player titles on GOG while using Steam for games whose multiplayer, community functions, availability, or account-based services are better suited to that platform.
Managing two libraries does mean maintaining two accounts, two update paths, and separate refund histories. Record which edition and DLC you bought, keep installers for titles you want to preserve, and avoid assuming that saves, achievements, or licenses will migrate between storefronts.
What are the most common buying mistakes?
Assuming every GOG game is completely offline
DRM-free distribution removes copy protection; it does not remove a game’s online-only modes or server dependencies. Check the individual title before buying for travel or long-term offline use.

Assuming every Steam game requires the same setup
Steam’s account model is consistent, but publishers can add launchers, authentication, anti-cheat, or persistent online requirements. The store page and the game’s documentation are the authoritative checks.
Using an old catalog comparison
A comparison published in 2018 cannot establish today’s catalog size, availability, or pricing. Search both stores for the exact title and edition instead of relying on historical totals.
Confusing a launcher shortcut with a license transfer
Adding an executable as a shortcut in another client does not move the purchase. The original storefront’s terms still govern the game.
Waiting too long to test a purchase
Refund windows are time-sensitive. Steam’s standard game rule uses both calendar time and playtime, while GOG’s advertised window remains subject to its agreement and local law.
So, which is better: GOG or Steam?
Pick GOG for DRM-free single-player games, downloadable installers, offline resilience, and the freedom to avoid a mandatory client where the title supports those paths. Pick Steam when the game is unavailable on GOG or when Steam’s account ecosystem, multiplayer implementation, community tools, or another title-specific service is the deciding factor.
For games available on both stores, make the decision at the edition level. Compare the actual DRM and launcher behavior, online requirements, DLC, feature support, regional price, and refund eligibility. That title-by-title check is more reliable than choosing one storefront for every purchase.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a GOG purchase be converted into a Steam key?
No. GOG states that games bought on its store cannot be redeemed elsewhere, so a GOG purchase should not be expected to generate a Steam license. You may add the installed executable as a non-Steam shortcut, but that does not transfer ownership or unlock Steam services.
Can I remove Galaxy after installing a GOG game?
For a game that supports GOG’s standalone offline path, yes: the downloaded installer and installed executable can be used without keeping Galaxy present. Removing the client also removes its automatic update, cloud-save, and social conveniences, so retain local save backups and obtain future patches manually.
Are GOG achievements available without an internet connection?
Achievements and similar social features depend on the game and the client service implementing them. The offline game itself may run, but recording or synchronizing an achievement can require Galaxy or the game’s online infrastructure.
What should I do if a game is listed on both stores but the features look different?
Treat the two listings as separate editions until proven otherwise. Compare the technical requirements, DLC manifests, multiplayer network, launcher notes, controller support, and refund conditions on each store page; availability on both storefronts does not guarantee feature parity.
