Neither system is a simple popularity contest or a pure critics’ award. Golden Joystick combines public nominations, professional filtering and fan voting, while The Game Awards combines media ballots with a smaller public component. Both also have category-specific rules that depart from their main formula.
Who controls the nominations?
Golden Joystick starts with the public, but the panel controls the shortlist
Golden Joystick invites people to nominate games, developers, publishers and personalities. Its official event description calls the ceremony the “people’s awards” and says millions of fans vote. Public nominations are the input, not the final ballot: the Golden Joystick Awards judging panel chooses the final shortlist.
#1 Best Overall
The panel consists of Future editors and a trusted network of journalists. That gives the process an editorial gate between the open nomination period and the public vote. A game can receive many nominations but still miss the published shortlist if the panel does not select it. Conversely, the panel can ensure that a category is not decided solely by the loudest online campaign.
The Game Awards delegates nominee selection to outlet ballots
The Game Awards says an international jury of more than 100 global media and influencer outlets chooses nominees for most categories. Each participating outlet completes a confidential, unranked ballot listing its top five choices in a category. The ballots are tabulated, and the five games appearing on the greatest number of ballots become nominees.
Ties are handled by expanding the field: if the vote for the final position is tied, six or more games can be nominated. The system therefore reflects the breadth of support across participating outlets rather than a single editor’s shortlist. Individual outlets do not publish a ranked order through this process, and the ballot is not a public fan poll.
What the difference means
Golden Joystick’s shortlist is a curated interpretation of public nominations. The Game Awards’ shortlist is an aggregate of independent outlet choices. A game with a large fan community may be highly visible in Golden Joystick nominations but fail to reach The Game Awards’ five-game threshold if fewer outlets place it on their ballots. A critically prominent game may have the opposite experience.
Who decides the winners?
Golden Joystick public categories
After the shortlist is published, fans vote in Golden Joystick’s public categories. Those votes determine the winners in those categories, making the awards unusually direct in their reliance on the audience. The public does not select the shortlist itself, however; the judging panel has already reduced the field.
Golden Joystick also presents critically selected awards. Those categories do not follow the same fan-vote formula, so a Golden Joystick trophy is not automatically evidence of a public vote. Check the category label and rules when comparing results.
Rank #2
The Game Awards’ 90/10 calculation
The Game Awards states that winners are determined by a blended vote between the voting jury, weighted at 90%, and public fan voting, weighted at 10%. Fans therefore have a real but limited effect on most category outcomes. A game generally needs strong support from the participating outlets to win, while public voting can influence a close result.

Why “fan voted” and “critics’ award” are both incomplete descriptions
Calling Golden Joystick entirely fan voted overlooks its professional shortlist. Calling The Game Awards entirely critics’ driven overlooks the 10% public share. The more accurate distinction is where most decision-making power sits: fans control Golden Joystick’s public-category winners, while the jury controls 90% of The Game Awards’ winner calculation.
How the ballots work
Golden Joystick’s public path
- Public nominations open. People submit eligible games and other candidates during the nomination window.
- Nominations close. The judging panel reviews the submitted field rather than allowing every nominated entry onto the final ballot.
- The shortlist is published. The panel’s selections become the candidates in the public categories.
- Fans vote. The public selects winners from those shortlisted candidates before the published deadline.
- Special ballots run separately. Ultimate Game of the Year and critically selected awards use their own rules or windows.
This design gives fans influence at two different points, but not in the same way. Public nominations help surface candidates; the final public vote determines winners only after editorial selection.
The Game Awards’ outlet-ballot path
- Participating outlets receive category ballots. The voting body includes more than 100 global media and influencer outlets.
- Each outlet lists five choices. The ballot is confidential and unranked, so an outlet’s first and fifth choices do not receive different points under the stated method.
- Votes are tabulated by appearance. The five games appearing on the most ballots become nominees.
- Ties expand the field. A tie for the last qualifying position can produce six or more nominees.
- The winner is calculated. Jury ballots account for 90% and public fan voting for 10% in the blended result.
The ballot mechanics explain why The Game Awards can have a nominee field that is not simply the five highest-selling games or the five most discussed by fans. A title must appear on enough participating outlet ballots to qualify.
2026 eligibility windows and dates
Golden Joystick’s 2026 calendar
| Stage | Date or window | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Nominations open | 6 August 2026 | The public can submit nominations |
| Nomination deadline | 28 August 2026 | Public nomination submissions close |
| Shortlist and public vote begin | 25 September 2026 | The judging panel’s shortlist is published and public voting opens |
| Main public vote closes | 23 October 2026 | Most public-category voting ends |
| Ultimate Game of the Year vote | 26–30 October 2026 | A separate voting window applies |
| Ceremony | 11 November 2026 | The 2026 winners are presented |
For core Golden Joystick categories, games generally must have released between 1 November 2025 and 25 September 2026. “Generally” is important because the rules create separate eligibility treatment for several categories.
Rank #3
Golden Joystick exceptions
- Still Playing and Best Game Expansion: Ongoing or online games can qualify even when their original release falls outside the core window, provided the category’s continuing-play or expansion criteria are met.
- Most Wanted: Games scheduled for release after 11 November can qualify, because this category concerns anticipated future releases rather than games already available for the main awards.
- Ultimate Game of the Year and critically selected categories: These use separate release windows or selection rules, so the core dates do not automatically determine eligibility.
The ceremony date is not the same as the last possible release date for every category. A game’s status depends on which Golden Joystick award it is being considered for.
The Game Awards’ 2026 cutoffs
| Rule | 2026 date or treatment |
|---|---|
| Most categories | Commercial availability by 20 November 2026 at 9 p.m. PT |
| Players’ Voice | Shipping cutoff of 30 November 2026 |
| Live-service games | Earlier releases can remain eligible when new content or improvements merit recognition |
| Early-access games | May qualify when the jury finds the new creative or technical work worthy |
| DLC and expansions | May qualify when the new work meets the jury’s standard for recognition |
| Remakes and remasters | May qualify when the new creative or technical work is considered worthy |
The Game Awards therefore does not use a simple “released this calendar year” test. Commercial availability by the stated cutoff is the main rule, with specific provisions for ongoing games and substantial new work in early-access, downloadable, expanded, remade and remastered releases.
Why a game can be nominated for one award but not the other
Different decision-makers see different evidence
Golden Joystick’s panel evaluates the public nomination pool, while The Game Awards aggregates ballots from a large international group of outlets. The same game can attract strong audience enthusiasm without appearing on enough media ballots, or it can be widely praised by critics without generating enough public momentum to dominate Golden Joystick’s nomination and voting stages.

The dates do not line up
Golden Joystick’s core period ends on 25 September 2026, whereas The Game Awards’ main commercial-availability cutoff is 20 November 2026 at 9 p.m. PT. A late-October game can miss Golden Joystick’s core categories yet remain eligible for most Game Awards categories. A game released before Golden Joystick’s cutoff can qualify there even if it is not prominent in the later outlet-ballot process.
Category definitions differ
Golden Joystick has a Most Wanted category for games due after the ceremony date, plus Still Playing and Best Game Expansion for ongoing titles and new content. The Game Awards separately accommodates live-service updates, early-access projects, DLC, expansions, remakes and remasters when the new work merits consideration. A title may therefore fit one show’s category structure more naturally than the other’s.
Nominee capacity and ties matter
The Game Awards normally takes the five games appearing on the most outlet ballots, with ties expanding the field. Golden Joystick’s judging panel is not using that same numerical threshold. Even when both organizations consider the same release, their shortlist size and selection method can produce different nominees.

Special categories that change the simple comparison
Golden Joystick’s Ultimate Game of the Year
Ultimate Game of the Year has its own voting window from 26 to 30 October 2026. It should not be treated as a duplicate of the main public-category vote because the timing and category-specific rules are separate.

Golden Joystick’s critically selected awards
Critically selected Golden Joystick awards are exceptions to the fan-led public categories. They demonstrate that Golden Joystick is a mixed system: one event can contain awards decided by public voting and others decided through professional selection.
The Game Awards’ Players’ Voice
Players’ Voice uses a later 30 November 2026 shipping cutoff than most Game Awards categories. That separate date reflects its distinct place in the program. Do not infer that every Game Awards category uses the same eligibility window or the same balance of jury and public input.
Live service, early access and revised releases
The Game Awards explicitly allows prior-year live-service games to remain eligible when meaningful new content or improvements justify recognition. It can also consider early-access games, DLC, expansions, remakes and remasters when the jury finds the new creative or technical work worthy. Release year alone is therefore not enough to predict eligibility.

Golden Joystick: audience connection filtered through editorial judgment
Golden Joystick is best understood as a measure of audience enthusiasm within a professionally assembled field. The public has a visible role in proposing candidates and a decisive role in public-category winners. The panel’s shortlist prevents the process from being an unrestricted vote on every submitted game.

The Game Awards: cross-outlet critical consensus with a public check
The Game Awards is primarily a measure of support across its participating media and influencer outlets. The confidential, unranked five-choice ballots make the nominee list a consensus signal across the jury. Public voting adds a 10% influence to the final result rather than replacing the jury’s assessment.

How to interpret a win
A Golden Joystick public-category win says that the shortlisted candidates’ fan vote favored that game. A Game Awards win says that the game prevailed under a result weighted nine parts jury to one part public. Neither result, by itself, proves that every player or every critic agreed; each reflects its own electorate and rules.
Practical guide for following the 2026 races
If you want to vote in Golden Joystick
- Submit nominations by 28 August 2026 if a game is not already represented in the public nomination pool.
- Return when the shortlist and public vote open on 25 September 2026.
- Check the category’s definition before voting, especially for ongoing games, expansions and anticipated releases.
- Cast your public-category votes before 23 October 2026.
- Look for the separate Ultimate Game of the Year window from 26 to 30 October 2026.
If you are tracking The Game Awards
- Use 20 November 2026 at 9 p.m. PT as the main commercial-availability cutoff.
- Apply the 30 November shipping cutoff specifically to Players’ Voice.
- Remember that nominees come from outlet ballots, not from an open public nomination list.

- Check special eligibility treatment for live-service updates, early access, DLC, expansions, remakes and remasters.
Common misconceptions
“Golden Joystick lets fans nominate, so fans choose every nominee.”
No. Fans submit nominations, but the Future editor and journalist judging panel selects the final shortlist.
“The Game Awards is decided entirely by critics.”
No. The jury supplies 90% of the winner calculation and public voting supplies 10%.

Normally five games qualify through the ballot count, but a tie for the final place can produce six or more nominees.
“A game released outside the main window cannot be considered.”
Both events have exceptions. Golden Joystick has category-specific treatment for ongoing games, expansions, Most Wanted, Ultimate Game of the Year and critically selected awards. The Game Awards allows qualifying new work in live-service games, early access, DLC, expansions, remakes and remasters.
“The host personally picks the winners at The Game Awards.”
Geoff Keighley says he is not a jury member and does not vote on nominees or winners. The advisory board also has no role in the awards process.
Bottom line
Choose Golden Joystick when you want to understand what fans selected from a journalist-curated shortlist. Choose The Game Awards when you want a result driven primarily by a broad international media jury, with fans contributing 10% to most winner calculations. Their different nomination authorities, ballot mechanics and 2026 eligibility dates are enough to produce different fields and different winners even in a year when both ceremonies recognize the same games.
