Set reminders on the subscribed game calendar, then add a separate travel block from the event’s Maps panel. In Google Calendar on a computer, go to Settings → Settings for my calendars → [your game calendar] → Event notifications and use Add notification to create at least two lead times. For travel, put the stadium or venue in the event’s location, open the Maps side panel, choose Directions, select your mode and route, and click Add to Calendar. Calendar currently does not calculate a universal, automatically changing “leave now” time for every game, so the travel block and its alert must be set up manually.
The setup that works
A reliable game-day calendar has three separate parts: the game event, one or more alerts, and a visible travel-time event. The game event tells you when play begins. Multiple notifications provide redundancy if you miss the first prompt. The travel item reserves the time needed to get there and can have its own alert.

- Game event: the subscribed fixture, with the correct venue and time zone.
- Planning alert: an earlier reminder to check parking, route conditions and departure assumptions.
- Travel block: a route calculated in Calendar’s Maps panel and added as a separate calendar item.
- Final alert: a nearer-to-start notification for the travel block or game.
You can apply notifications to every event on the game calendar or override them for one important fixture. Google Calendar supports email, desktop notifications and alerts displayed inside the Calendar window. You may combine channels and add more than one notification time.

There is no sports-specific default schedule published by Google. Pick lead times that match the distance, traffic risk and how much preparation the game requires. A useful pattern is:

Two alerts are the minimum practical backup: an early planning prompt and a nearer-to-start prompt. A third alert is useful for long journeys, but adding notifications does not make the travel calculation automatic; it only creates more reminders at the times you choose.
Set default notifications for the subscribed game calendar
Changing the calendar’s event notifications is the fastest way to protect every fixture in a subscribed schedule. Google’s web instructions for all-event defaults require a computer browser rather than the mobile app.
- Open Google Calendar at
calendar.google.comin a desktop browser. - In the left side panel, find the subscribed game calendar. Open Settings for my calendars and select that calendar’s name.
- Scroll to Event notifications.
- Choose the first delivery method, such as Notification (a browser/desktop prompt), Email, or an alert shown in Calendar, and set its lead time.
- Click Add notification to create the second lead time. Select its delivery method and timing independently.
- Add a third notification only when the journey or event justifies it. Remove an unnecessary rule with the delete control beside that notification.
These defaults apply to events on the selected game calendar. They do not change reminders on your personal, work or other subscribed calendars. If the subscription contains events created by another organization, the calendar-level defaults are the setting you control; details embedded in the feed may still vary.

A derby, playoff, concert-style opening ceremony or especially difficult away trip may need a different plan from ordinary fixtures. Change the individual event without altering the rest of the schedule.

- Open the game event in Google Calendar.
- Select Edit event.
- In the notification section, add or change the alert times and delivery methods for this event.
- Save the event, choosing the appropriate option if Calendar asks whether to change one occurrence or a series.
An event-level change affects only your copy of the event and your account. It is useful when one match needs an extra early warning, while routine games can retain the calendar’s normal defaults.
Add travel time with Calendar’s Maps side panel
Calendar treats travel as a separate item rather than silently moving the game’s start time. This makes the journey visible in your schedule and prevents another appointment from occupying the time you actually need to be on the road.
- Open the game event and enter the complete stadium or venue address in the Location field. A recognizable venue name is preferable to a shorthand nickname.
- Save the event if necessary, then open the Maps side panel in Google Calendar.
- Choose Directions.
- Confirm the starting point, select a travel mode (for example, driving, public transport, cycling or walking where offered), and choose the route or trip that matches your plan.
- Click Add to Calendar. Calendar creates a new travel-time item associated with the route and the game.
- Open that new travel item and inspect its start and end times. Give it a location and notes if you need a parking entrance, rail station or meeting point.
- Add an alert to the travel item when you want a prompt at departure time. The game’s own notifications remain separate.
The route is a snapshot of the choices you made. If you later change your starting point, travel mode or destination, create or edit the travel item again rather than assuming the original block has updated itself.
Can Google Calendar remind you when to leave?
Not automatically for every event. Calendar’s documented workflow lets you select a travel mode and trip in the Maps panel and then click Add to Calendar. It does not document a built-in, continuously updated “leave now” alert that recalculates departure time from live traffic for all game events.

A Google Calendar Product Expert wrote on January 21, 2024: “This isn’t available automatically within Google Calendar. However, you can set a travel time using Google Maps and Google Calendar on the desktop.” Treat that as the current product limitation, not a promise that the interface can never change. Check the labels in your account if Google introduces a newer travel feature.
Community discussions in 2025 also describe direct automatic return-travel handling as unavailable. Third-party automation may be able to create travel blocks, but behavior, permissions, reliability and availability differ by service. Do not rely on an integration for a time-critical trip until you have confirmed that it updates the right calendar and sends the alerts you expect.
Make the travel block useful on game day
Put the departure alert on the travel item
If the alert is attached only to the game, it may arrive after you should already have left. The travel item is the calendar object that represents the start of the journey, so give it the departure notification. Keep a separate game alert for the start of play.

Leave room for real-world delays
Maps’ route duration is not a guarantee. Add personal buffer time for parking, security checks, transfers, walking from a remote lot and finding your seat. You can lengthen the travel block manually by editing its end time or create a short preparation block before departure.

Protect the calendar from overlaps
Because the travel item occupies the route period, overlapping appointments become visible. If another event conflicts, decide whether to move that appointment, change the route or accept that you will miss part of the game. A travel block that is hidden inside the game event cannot provide this warning.
Check time zones for away games
Time-zone errors can shift both the displayed kickoff and your reminders. Google Calendar stores events in relation to UTC and converts them for display. The account has a primary time zone, can show a secondary time zone, and allows an individual event to use its own time zone.
- Open Calendar’s general settings and verify your Primary time zone.
- Enable a Secondary time zone when you regularly follow games in another region; this puts both zones on the calendar view for comparison.
- Open the away-game event and inspect its event-specific time zone. Use the venue’s zone when the fixture information is supplied in local time.
- Check the travel item as well. Its route and alerts should be based on the same local context as the game.
- Recheck events around daylight-saving changes. A zone’s offset can change even when the scheduled local kickoff remains the same.
For a game abroad, confirm whether the feed’s time is already converted to your primary zone or is explicitly labeled as the venue’s local time. Do not “correct” an event twice by manually adding or subtracting hours after Calendar has already converted it.

The first two options use Calendar’s documented controls and are the predictable choice when you need to know exactly which event owns each alert. Automation can reduce manual work, but it introduces another account, permission set and failure point.

Troubleshoot a missing game reminder
The calendar has no notifications
Open Settings for my calendars, select the game calendar and inspect Event notifications. A subscribed calendar can be visible while having no alert rule that you control. Add at least one notification, then add a second with Add notification if you need redundancy.
The browser blocked the desktop alert
Check the browser’s site permissions for calendar.google.com and allow notifications. Operating-system focus modes, quiet hours and notification permissions can also suppress the prompt even when Calendar is configured correctly.
Calendar was closed
Desktop notifications depend on Calendar remaining open in a browser session. If you routinely close the browser, use email as one of the backup channels rather than relying only on a desktop prompt.

The alert time is wrong after travel
Inspect the event’s time zone, the calendar’s primary zone and any secondary-zone display. Confirm that daylight-saving changes have not altered the offset. Then inspect the separately created travel item; it can have a different start time from the game if the route was edited.
The travel item is missing
Open the event on a computer, confirm that a venue is present in Location, open the Maps side panel, select Directions, choose a route and click Add to Calendar. Selecting directions without completing the add step does not create a calendar block.
The reminder arrived but you were already late
Move the alert to the start of the travel item, not merely a few minutes before kickoff. Increase the travel block for parking and entry time, and retain an earlier planning alert for checking conditions before departure.
A repeatable game-day checklist
- Subscribe to the correct game calendar and make it visible.
- Set a calendar-level planning alert and a nearer-to-start backup under Event notifications.
- Use email, desktop notification or an in-Calendar alert according to how you monitor Calendar.
- For the next game, verify the venue address and the event’s time zone.
- Use Maps → Directions to select the route and click Add to Calendar.
- Open the resulting travel item, add a departure alert and include a realistic buffer.
- For unusually important fixtures, add an event-level notification without changing the whole calendar.
- Before leaving, check traffic, transit disruptions, parking and any venue entry requirements; Calendar will not make those decisions for you.
What Calendar can and cannot do for this workflow
Calendar can store a game supplied by a subscription, send several reminders through different channels, display the venue, and add a manually selected route as a separate travel event. It cannot currently be treated as a universal automatic leave-time engine that continuously recalculates every departure from live conditions. The dependable approach is therefore explicit: configure redundant alerts, create the travel block yourself, and verify time zones whenever the game or your location crosses a regional boundary.
