The shutdown affected Borealis, Google’s managed local-Steam integration for selected ChromeOS devices—not Valve’s Steam service, users’ Steam purchases, or every way to play games on a Chromebook.
That distinction matters. Existing owners lost Google’s supported route for installing and running compatible Steam games locally. They can still use game streaming, Steam Link, and—in some cases—unsupported Linux configurations.

What Google actually ended
Steam for Chromebook was a Google-and-Valve beta that brought a curated Steam environment to selected Chromebooks. Its internal ChromeOS project name was Borealis.
Unlike the ordinary Linux development environment, Borealis used a dedicated virtual machine containing a modified Arch Linux image. Google designed the system to coordinate the operating system, graphics stack, drivers, Steam client and updates as one managed experience. Google described the approach in its technical overview of bringing Steam to ChromeOS: ChromeOS.dev’s Borealis explanation.

- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
The product launched as an alpha in 2022 and later became a beta, but it never graduated into a stable, generally supported ChromeOS feature. Google’s in-product warning said the beta would conclude on January 1, 2026, after which games installed through it would no longer be playable. That warning was reported by 9to5Google.
As of September 8, 2026, that deadline has passed.
What the shutdown does—and does not—mean
| Claim | Accurate? | What it really means |
|---|---|---|
| “Steam was shut down.” | No | Valve’s Steam service continues; Google ended its ChromeOS integration. |
| “Steam was removed from every Chromebook.” | Too broad | The official Borealis beta ended. Other streaming and experimental options remain. |
| “All Steam purchases were lost.” | No | Purchases remain associated with the user’s Steam account. |
| “Every Chromebook can still run Steam locally.” | No | Linux-based attempts are unsupported and depend heavily on hardware and software compatibility. |
| “Chromebooks can no longer be used for gaming.” | No | Cloud gaming, Steam Link, Android games and other options remain available. |
Which Chromebooks were affected?
The beta targeted relatively capable Intel and AMD Chromebooks. Google’s published requirements included an Intel Core i3- or AMD Ryzen 3-class processor, at least 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Google also maintained a supported-device list, so meeting the headline specifications did not automatically make every Chromebook eligible.
Those requirements now describe historical Borealis eligibility, not current official Steam support. A Chromebook can be powerful enough to experiment with Linux gaming without being supported by Google for Borealis—or being a good local gaming machine. Graphics support, drivers, cooling, storage speed, controller compatibility and the specific CPU architecture all matter.

A capable processor and plenty of memory do not by themselves recreate the integrated Borealis environment.
What happened to installed games, purchases and saves?
The shutdown primarily affected the local game installations and the ChromeOS-specific runtime that made them playable. It did not erase a user’s Steam account or remove purchased games from Valve’s account system.

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Saves are more complicated:
- Steam Cloud saves: If a game supported Steam Cloud and synchronization had completed, saves may be available when the game is installed elsewhere.
- Local-only saves: Saves stored only inside the Borealis environment may not be recoverable after that environment stops working.
- Game-specific behavior: Some games store saves in unusual locations or use their own synchronization systems.
- Backups: A manually exported save or an existing computer backup may provide another recovery route.
There is no basis for saying that every save was automatically deleted, but there is also no basis for promising recovery. The practical lesson for anyone who still has access to an old working setup is to check Steam Cloud status and copy important game-specific save folders before changing or wiping the device.
Why is Google’s documentation confusing?
Google’s Chromebook Help page still describes “Steam for Chromebook (Beta)” and retains requirements and a device list. That conflicts with the January 1, 2026 termination warning reported by 9to5Google.
The Help page should therefore be treated as stale or incompletely updated documentation—not proof that Borealis remains supported. The dated termination notice is the more relevant information for current owners.
Can Steam still run on a Chromebook?
Official local Steam through Borealis: no
Google’s first-party local Steam route ended with the beta. There is no announced direct successor in the cited material, and buyers should not assume that a newly marketed “gaming Chromebook” includes a supported native Steam client.
Steam through the Linux development environment: sometimes, but unsupported
Technically experienced users may try installing the regular Linux version of Steam inside ChromeOS’s Linux development environment on some x86 Chromebooks. This is a separate project from Borealis and lacks its managed graphics and driver integration.

Results can vary with:
- Intel or AMD graphics support and accelerated rendering;
- the Chromebook’s CPU architecture and memory;
- controller and audio support;
- available storage and thermal limits;
- the game’s launcher and anti-cheat system; and
- ChromeOS, container and Linux updates.
It is not a simple replacement and is not a Google-supported way to restore the discontinued beta. Enabling Developer Mode, replacing firmware or installing another operating system can wipe local data, reduce device security and create recovery or support complications. School- and work-managed devices may block Linux, Android apps, Developer Mode or gaming sites entirely; users should check administrator policies rather than attempt to bypass them.
Steam Link: yes, if you already own a gaming PC
Steam Link streams games from a capable Windows, macOS or Linux computer to the Chromebook. The computer does the actual rendering, so the Chromebook acts as a client.
This is useful for someone with a gaming desktop or laptop at home and a good local network. It is not a solution for a Chromebook owner who has no other computer capable of running the game. The host PC must generally be available, and network quality affects latency and image quality.
Cloud gaming: yes, for supported titles
Cloud services run games on remote servers and stream the result to the Chromebook. This can make a modest Chromebook suitable for gaming, but it changes the requirements: a reliable connection and low latency matter more than local GPU performance.
The most practical alternatives in 2026
| Your situation | Best fit | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| You own a gaming PC | Steam Link | The PC must be capable, available and connected to a good network. |
| You own Steam games but no gaming PC | GeForce NOW, where supported | Compatibility is title-by-title and depends on the service, subscription and network. |
| You want a subscription catalog | Xbox Cloud Gaming | The catalog is controlled by Microsoft and varies by plan and region. |
| You need offline local play | Android games or selected Linux games | Neither offers the breadth and predictability of native Windows Steam gaming. |
| You want broad PC compatibility | A Windows gaming laptop or Steam Deck-class device | These usually cost more and give up some ChromeOS simplicity and battery-life advantages. |
| You enjoy technical experimentation | Linux Steam experiments | Unsupported, hardware-dependent and potentially fragile after updates. |
GeForce NOW
GeForce NOW is the closest cloud alternative for people who already own compatible Steam games. It connects to supported libraries including Steam, but a Steam purchase does not guarantee that the game is available on GeForce NOW. The specific title, storefront version and launcher must be supported.

NVIDIA’s system requirements and service conditions should be checked before subscribing. Cloud play requires an internet connection, introduces some latency and image compression, and does not provide dependable offline access.
Google announced a Chromebook-focused Fast Pass offer in November 2025: one year with qualifying Chromebook purchases, 10 gaming hours per month, up to five unused hours rolling over, no ads and queue skipping. Offer eligibility and terms can change, so readers should verify the live offer rather than treating it as a permanent Chromebook feature. Details are in Google’s announcement.
Xbox Cloud Gaming
Xbox Cloud Gaming is accessed through a browser on supported ChromeOS devices. Microsoft lists Chromebooks running ChromeOS 85 or later among supported platforms in its getting-started guide.
Microsoft’s December 2025 guide said cloud gaming was included with Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium and Ultimate. It listed Essential at $10 per month and Premium at $14.99 per month at that time. Prices, names, benefits, promotions and regional availability can change, so check the current Game Pass page before purchasing.

Should you buy a gaming Chromebook?
Buy one for cloud gaming, Android gaming, productivity, portability and battery life—not on the assumption that it comes with supported local Steam gaming.
A Chromebook can be an excellent streaming client if the home network is reliable. However, increasing RAM or choosing a faster processor will not remove cloud-service queues, catalog restrictions or internet latency. Conversely, a Chromebook with strong specifications is not automatically a dependable local Steam machine because graphics and driver support remain decisive.
If your priority is dependable offline access to a large Steam library, a Windows gaming laptop, Steam Deck-class handheld or another compatible gaming PC is the safer choice. If you already own a gaming PC, a Chromebook may still work well as a lightweight Steam Link client.

Bottom line
Google ended the official Steam for Chromebook Beta, known internally as Borealis, on January 1, 2026. That ended Google’s supported local-installation path for Steam games on selected Chromebooks; it did not end Steam, erase users’ purchases or eliminate every way to play games through ChromeOS.
Steam Link remains useful for owners of a gaming PC. GeForce NOW can stream supported games from connected libraries, and Xbox Cloud Gaming offers a separate subscription-based route. Linux Steam may be possible on some x86 Chromebooks, but it is unsupported and highly dependent on the device.
