GPD’s Win Max 2 (2025) is a Windows gaming handheld built into a 10.1-inch clamshell mini-laptop. Its headline upgrade is an optional AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 processor with Radeon 890M integrated graphics, alongside up to 64GB of LPDDR5X memory, 2TB of storage, dual USB4 ports and OCuLink eGPU support.
It is not a new console-style form factor. The 2025 model is a refresh of the existing Win Max 2, introduced during the late-2024 and early-2025 availability cycle. Its value comes from combining handheld controls with a physical keyboard, touchpad, substantial connectivity and unusually high memory capacity. The compromises are equally important: a 60Hz screen, large handheld dimensions, integrated-graphics limits, a high launch-era price and region-dependent availability.

A handheld PC that is also a mini-laptop
The Win Max 2 runs Windows 11 Home 64-bit and should be thought of as a compact gaming laptop with built-in game controls, rather than simply a handheld console. Its clamshell chassis contains a 10.1-inch touchscreen, a compact keyboard and touchpad. Analog sticks, buttons and other gamepad controls sit above the keyboard.
That design makes the device unusually versatile. It can play PC games, run emulators and indie titles, function as a Windows work computer, host development tools or virtual machines, and connect to external displays and peripherals. Closing the lid also protects the screen and controls during travel.

- 10.1-Inch IPS Touchscreen, 1920x1200 Native (2560x1600 Max), 16:10, 450 Nits; AMD XDNA 2 NPU at 50 TOPS for AI-Accelerated Workloads
- 32GBGB LPDDR5X 7500 MT/s RAM and 2TB M.2 NVMe SSD – maximum configuration for the most demanding games and applications
- Dual USB4 40 Gbps Ports, OcuLink (SFF-8612) eGPU Port (GPD G1 Compatible), Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, Windows 11 Home
- Hall Effect Joysticks, Full Gamepad Controls, Backlit Keyboard, Trackpad, 67 Wh Battery, Optional 4G LTE – The Ultimate WIN Max 2
The trade-off is portability and ergonomics. It is considerably larger and heavier than a conventional handheld, while its small keyboard is not a replacement for a full-size laptop keyboard. The controls are useful for gaming, but buyers seeking the most comfortable controller-first experience may prefer a Steam Deck OLED, ROG Ally or Lenovo Legion Go.
What changed in the 2025 refresh?
The major change is the addition of AMD’s Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 platform. GPD also retained a less expensive Ryzen 7 8840U configuration in some markets. Other reported updates include LPDDR5X-7500 memory, up to 64GB of RAM, up to 2TB of factory NVMe storage, dual USB4 Type-C ports, an updated cooling fan design and audio power-amplifier changes.
OCuLink external-graphics support remains part of the platform. GPD specifically promotes compatibility with its GPD G1 graphics dock, although OCuLink should not be interpreted as meaning that the Win Max 2 includes an eGPU or is limited exclusively to that accessory.
GPD’s regional product material describes the 2025 version as a relatively minor platform refresh rather than a chassis redesign. The keyboard, clamshell layout, display concept and overall use case remain familiar to existing Win Max 2 owners.
Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 and Radeon 890M
The top model uses AMD’s Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, a Zen 5 and Zen 5c processor with 12 cores and 24 threads. AMD lists a maximum boost clock of up to 5.1GHz, a 28W default TDP and a configurable processor range of 15W to 54W. GPD’s device materials specify an operating target of up to 35W for the Win Max 2, so the chip’s maximum configurable range should not be confused with the handheld’s configured power limit.
| Specification | Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 |
|---|---|
| CPU architecture | Zen 5 / Zen 5c |
| CPU cores and threads | 12 cores / 24 threads |
| Maximum boost clock | Up to 5.1GHz |
| Integrated graphics | Radeon 890M |
| GPU compute units | 16 |
| Maximum GPU frequency | Up to 2.9GHz |
| NPU performance | Up to 50 TOPS |
| Configurable processor TDP | 15W–54W |
AMD’s official processor specifications are available on the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 product page. Compared with the Ryzen 7 8840U, the newer chip offers a more modern CPU architecture and Radeon 890M graphics. Launch coverage reported claimed improvements of up to roughly 30% in CPU performance and 15% in integrated graphics, but those figures should be treated as attributed launch or manufacturer claims rather than universal independent benchmark results.
Radeon 890M remains integrated graphics. It uses system memory rather than dedicated VRAM, and performance depends on the Win Max 2’s power setting, cooling, memory bandwidth, drivers, resolution and game settings. The Ryzen AI branding also needs context: AMD lists up to 50 NPU TOPS, while GPD advertises up to 80 TOPS for aggregate platform AI performance. Neither number is a gaming frame-rate measurement. The practical gaming upgrade comes primarily from the newer CPU and GPU architecture, not from the NPU.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Display: sharp, bright and limited to 60Hz
The Win Max 2 has a 10.1-inch landscape touchscreen with a 60Hz refresh rate. GPD’s regional materials describe an improved LTPS panel and approximately 450 nits of brightness. Launch coverage reported a 2560×1600 panel at approximately 299 pixels per inch.
There is a specification ambiguity worth checking before purchase. GPD’s official product page also lists 1920×1200 in a benchmark configuration. That may be the resolution used for testing rather than the panel’s native resolution, so the two figures should not automatically be treated as contradictory native-panel specifications. Buyers should confirm the exact retail unit’s display documentation with the seller.
The practical conclusion is clearer than the paperwork: the screen should look sharp and provide useful desktop space, but 60Hz is a meaningful limitation for premium gaming hardware. Demanding games will often need reduced resolution, upscaling or lower quality settings. Native 2560×1600 gaming is not a realistic expectation for many modern AAA titles on Radeon 890M.

Memory, storage and ports
Commonly reported configurations include a Ryzen 7 8840U model with 32GB of LPDDR5X memory and 1TB of storage, plus a Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 model with 64GB of LPDDR5X memory and 2TB of storage. GPD lists memory speeds up to 7,500 MT/s. Some retailers advertise 4TB versions, but these may involve reseller-installed storage rather than standard factory configurations.
Recommended Free Tools
The LPDDR5X memory is soldered, so buyers should choose 32GB or 64GB at purchase. The 64GB option is unusually generous for a handheld and can help with development tools, virtual machines, content creation and heavy multitasking. The NVMe SSD is the more plausible upgrade path, but the internal layout, number of slots and warranty implications should be confirmed for the exact revision and seller before buying.
Connectivity is one of the Win Max 2’s strongest advantages. Reported features include:
- OCuLink for external-GPU connectivity.
- Two USB4 Type-C ports on the 2025 refresh.
- USB-A ports.
- HDMI output.
- SD and microSD card support.
- A combined headphone and microphone jack.
- Wireless networking and Bluetooth, subject to the regional SKU.
OCuLink can enable a much more powerful docked graphics setup, particularly with GPD’s G1 dock, but an eGPU requires additional hardware, power, drivers and cables. It also changes the experience from a self-contained handheld into a portable computer that becomes a desktop system at a desk.
Battery and charging
GPD lists a 67Wh battery and 100W USB-C Power Delivery charging. Its materials claim that the battery can reach 50% from empty in approximately 20 minutes under stated conditions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Reseller guidance for the broader Win Max 2 family cites up to 14 hours for light use, 6–8 hours for moderate use and roughly three hours for heavy use. Those figures are usage-dependent and should not be interpreted as expected gaming endurance. High-power HX 370 gaming can drain the battery substantially faster depending on frame rate, brightness, wireless activity, TDP and cooling behavior.
The large battery is helpful, but a 100W charger also adds travel weight. Buyers should check whether their regional package includes the correct plug and charger certification.
What gaming performance should you expect?
The Radeon 890M should be capable of modern PC gaming at reduced settings and, where necessary, reduced resolution. Older games, emulation, indie releases, esports software and well-optimized mainstream titles are a better fit than demanding new AAA games rendered at the display’s highest resolution.
A sensible target is a stable 30–60 frames per second rather than chasing very high frame rates. The 60Hz panel cannot display the benefits of competitive frame rates above 60Hz, and the integrated GPU often makes resolution scaling or upscaling more useful than maximum image quality.
Performance will vary significantly with the selected TDP and game profile. A benchmark result from one power setting should not be generalized to every Win Max 2 configuration. Likewise, connecting an eGPU through OCuLink can transform graphics performance, but the resulting setup is no longer representative of the standalone handheld.

Productivity and creator use
The keyboard, touchpad, Windows compatibility and port selection are the reasons to choose the Win Max 2 over a conventional handheld. The 32GB and 64GB configurations also give it more headroom for development, browser-heavy work and creative applications than many mainstream handheld PCs.
GPD advertises stylus support, including 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity and MPP 2.0 compatibility. The touchscreen may therefore be useful for notes, light drawing and direct Windows interaction, although the 10.1-inch display remains small for sustained desktop work. Serious 3D rendering will also be limited by the integrated GPU unless an eGPU is attached.
Windows introduces its own friction on a small touchscreen: scaling, launcher overhead, gamepad detection, sleep and resume behavior, TDP controls, fan profiles and firmware updates may require more configuration than a console-style operating system. These are important practical considerations, not evidence of a specific defect rate.

Price and availability
There is no single worldwide current MSRP that accurately describes every Win Max 2 (2025) listing. Price varies with processor, RAM, storage, seller, taxes, shipping, warranty and regional availability.
Launch-era coverage reported approximately $958 for the Ryzen 7 8840U model and approximately $1,462 for the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 model. A Japanese distributor listed a 64GB/2TB HX 370 configuration at ¥249,500, while a later Japanese direct-store listing showed the product from ¥223,000. These are dated regional reference prices, not universal prices for September 2026.
Before ordering, confirm the keyboard layout, charger plug, LTE availability, included accessories, return policy, taxes, import costs and warranty service. GPD products are sold through regional distributors and specialist retailers, and the exact SKU can differ by market. For example, the Japanese direct-store listing said an LTE module was not planned for Japan; that should not be generalized to every country.
Who should buy the Win Max 2 (2025)?
| Buyer | Fit |
|---|---|
| Wants handheld controls plus a physical keyboard | Strong |
| Needs a portable Windows work computer | Strong, if comfortable with compact input |
| Wants OCuLink eGPU expansion | Strong |
| Prefers older games, emulation and optimized PC titles | Strong |
| Wants the smallest possible handheld | Weak |
| Prioritizes competitive high-refresh gaming | Weak |
| Wants maximum performance per dollar | Mixed |
| Owns a 2024 Ryzen 7 8840U Win Max 2 | Upgrade case is limited |
| Owns a 6800U-era Win Max 2 | More compelling upgrade |
For buyers who do not need built-in controls, a 13- or 14-inch gaming laptop may offer a better keyboard, larger display, more discrete-GPU choices and more familiar warranty coverage at a similar promotional price. For console-like simplicity and lower cost, the Steam Deck OLED is a different but often more practical proposition. ROG Ally-class devices and Lenovo Legion Go models are better suited to conventional handheld ergonomics and, on relevant models, high-refresh gaming.
Verdict
The GPD Win Max 2 (2025) is a specialized mobile PC rather than a straightforward Steam Deck alternative. The Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 makes the top configuration more capable, and 64GB of RAM, dual USB4, a broad port selection and OCuLink give it unusual flexibility.
Its value ultimately depends less on the “AI” label than on whether you need one machine to function as a handheld, mini-laptop and expandable desktop. If you want a keyboard, Windows software, generous memory and eGPU support, it remains distinctive. If you want a light, simple, high-refresh gaming handheld or the best performance per dollar, its high price, 60Hz screen and integrated-graphics limits make the case much weaker.
