Grand Theft Auto V Crashing on PC: How to Fix It

Start with a game update, graphics-driver update, and file verification, then choose the next step based on GTA V’s error code, edition, and crash timing.

To troubleshoot GTA V crashing on PC, first install the latest game patch, update your graphics driver, and verify the game files in the launcher you use. Then follow the steps for the exact error code or crash timing: Rockstar gives different guidance for ERR_GFX_STATE, D3DERR_DEVICELOST, and ERR_GFX_D3D_INIT, so there is no single fix that applies to every PC.

Start with the low-risk checks

Rockstar’s general GTAV troubleshooting guidance, last updated October 7, 2025, recommends launching while connected to the internet so the latest patch can apply, updating graphics drivers, and verifying the installation. The exact verification steps depend on your launcher.

  1. Install the latest game patch. Connect to the internet and launch the game so any available update can apply.
  2. Update your graphics driver. Use the driver update route for your GPU manufacturer. If a specific error article recommends a different driver action, follow that error-specific guidance below.
  3. Verify the game files. This checks the installed files and may repair problems without requiring a full reinstall.

Verify in Rockstar Games Launcher

Sign in to the Rockstar Games Launcher, open Settings, select GTAV under My installed games, then choose Verify Integrity. Rockstar’s file-verification instructions describe verification as a way to resolve installation and game issues.

Verify in Steam or Epic Games Launcher

In Steam, open GTAV’s Properties and use the local-file verification option. Rockstar’s Steam verification guide specifically includes crashes and freezing among the problems file verification may address. Epic has a separate verification flow in its launcher; use the current client interface for the installed game.

Choose the fix for the error message

If an error appears, note its exact wording before changing settings. Rockstar’s error-specific articles distinguish the following cases.

ERR_GFX_STATE when the game starts

Rockstar’s ERR_GFX_STATE guidance, last updated June 27, 2025, suggests updating the video driver. If the latest driver is already installed and the crash continues, try an earlier driver version. The article also recommends changing the Graphics API from Vulkan to DirectX 12.

If those steps do not help, Rockstar lists running GTAV.exe as administrator and disabling fullscreen optimization as further options. To try the compatibility setting, locate GTAV.exe, open its Properties, select the Compatibility tab, and check Disable fullscreen optimizations. You can also use the option there to run the program as administrator. Change one setting at a time so you can tell whether it affects the crash.

D3DERR_DEVICELOST

Rockstar says this error is usually associated with a conflict involving DirectX 3D or display drivers. Its D3DERR_DEVICELOST article, last updated April 26, 2024, recommends updating or clean-installing the graphics driver. A clean installation is more involved than a routine update, so use the GPU manufacturer’s instructions for your card and driver.

ERR_GFX_D3D_INIT

For ERR_GFX_D3D_INIT, Rockstar identifies outdated DirectX, Windows, or GPU drivers as possible causes. Follow its error-specific guidance, last updated June 23, 2025, to update the relevant software or driver.

Visual C++ or DirectX installation errors

If the message explicitly names Visual C++ or DirectX, Rockstar’s general troubleshooting page says the corresponding installation may be faulty and directs players to the relevant installers in the game’s Redistributables folder. Use the installer for the component named in the error rather than downloading an unrelated package.

Check the edition and its PC requirements

Confirm whether you installed GTAV Enhanced or GTAV Legacy before judging whether the PC meets the game’s requirements. Rockstar’s requirements page was last updated December 10, 2025; it also cautions that downloadable content and programming changes can alter requirements, and that some mobile, integrated, and AGP components may be incompatible.

Edition Minimum operating system Minimum processor Minimum memory Minimum graphics card Storage listed
GTAV Enhanced Windows 10 build 1909 or newer Intel Core i7-4770 or AMD FX-9590 8 GB RAM NVIDIA GTX 1630 (4 GB) or AMD RX 6400 (4 GB) 105 GB SSD
GTAV Legacy Windows 10 64-bit Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 or AMD Phenom 9850 4 GB RAM NVIDIA 9800 GT (1 GB) or AMD HD 4870 (1 GB) 125 GB HDD

These are the minimum specifications Rockstar lists, not a guarantee that every system meeting them will be free of crashes. The SSD requirement applies to Enhanced; an SSD is not a general crash remedy for a PC that already meets the storage requirement. See Rockstar’s GTAV PC system requirements for the edition-specific details.

Check for antivirus interference carefully

Rockstar’s general troubleshooting guidance suggests checking whether antivirus software is interfering with the game. If you test by temporarily disabling or removing protection, keep the test brief, restore protection immediately, and use a safer game-folder exception or the antivirus vendor’s instructions if the test points to a conflict. This is a diagnostic possibility, not an established common cause of GTAV crashes.

Collect diagnostics if the crash continues

When the basic and error-specific steps do not resolve the problem, capture the exact error message or a screenshot and gather system files for support. Rockstar’s Windows system-files guide explains how to save these files. Include:

  • launcher.log, which can help document what happened during launch;
  • DxDiag, which lists system specifications; and
  • MSInfo, which includes Windows Error Reporting information that can help identify what failed.

Send these details with the crash timing—on startup, during loading, or during play—and the edition and launcher you use. That gives support concrete information to investigate instead of relying on guesses.
