The Hollow Knight Wiki describes him as a fantasy version of Zote shaped by Bretta’s imagination. You can leave him unfought and still access Pantheons Three and Five; defeating him gives an initial Essence reward and opens a series of increasingly difficult rematches.
How to unlock Grey Prince Zote
Rescue Zote, then defeat him in the Colosseum of Fools. After he returns to Dirtmouth and Bretta becomes enamored with him, the Grey Prince Zote encounter becomes available in the basement of Bretta’s house. This sequence and the encounter details are reported by the Hollow Knight Wiki’s Zote entry.
The game description reproduced by the wiki reads: “Figment of an obsessed mind. Lacks grace but becomes stronger with every defeat.”
Rewards and repeat victories
The Hollow Knight Wiki’s Grey Prince Zote entry lists 300 Essence for the first victory and a Golden Zote Statue for the tenth. It reports boss health values of 1,200–1,500, increasing by 100 per fight for the first four fights. These are wiki-reported game mechanics, not developer-confirmed figures.

- Each victory adds another adjective to Grey Prince Zote’s title, according to the wiki.
- Bretta leaves Dirtmouth after the fourth victory, according to the same entry.
If you want the initial Essence, one victory is enough. Continuing means taking on the rematches for their changing encounter and the statue reward; the wiki-reported statue milestone is the tenth victory.
How the rematches change
Summoned Zotelings stay in the arena until killed, according to the wiki’s Winged Zoteling and Volatile Zoteling entries. The reported progression is:

Can you skip him and still reach the Pantheons?
Yes. The wiki says Grey Prince Zote is the only boss that can be omitted from the Pantheons by leaving him unfought in Bretta’s basement, and that Pantheons Three and Five remain accessible without him. If your priority is Pantheon progression, you can defer the basement fight; if you want his rewards or rematches, you can fight him separately. The Eternal Ordeal is a separate secret challenge in the Hall of Gods, not another name for the basement boss fight. It sends waves of Zote-themed enemies, beginning with a Zoteling.
