Groot is a Vanguard in Marvel Rivals whose strength comes from controlling space with walls, then using his team’s pressure to make those walls matter. Place Thornlash Walls to punish enemies your team attacks, use Ironwood Walls to build survivability while fighting nearby, and save Strangling Prison for moments when allies can follow up. The figures below are those listed on Marvel’s official hero page; check the live game for exact values if a newer patch may have changed them.
What is Groot’s role?
Groot is a space-controlling Vanguard: he can attack at range, threaten close quarters, and reshape an area with two different walls. His listed health is 850 and his movement speed is 6 m/s. Those are official game specifications, not independent performance measurements. His kit rewards thinking about where a fight will happen, not simply placing walls wherever they are available.
Marvel’s official Groot hero page was dated November 23, 2024. The latest Groot-specific adjustment identified here is from the September 2026 balance post, so treat older hero-page figures as published specifications rather than a guarantee that every value remains unchanged in the live build.
Groot’s abilities and listed stats
| Ability | Input | What it does | Listed figures |

| Ironwood Wall | E | Places a wall that, when awakened, grants Groot bonus health from damage dealt by him and nearby allies. | 10 m maximum placement distance; 12-second cooldown; up to 250 bonus health at 50 per second while awakened; Groot is Unstoppable within 15 m of an awakened Ironwood Wall. |
| Strangling Prison | Q | Fires a cluster of vines that pulls nearby enemies inward and imprisons them. | 8 m spherical radius; 3.5-second imprisonment; 10 projectile damage, 70 field damage, and 20 damage every 0.5 seconds while targets are imprisoned. |
| Flora Colossus | Passive | Awakens nearby wooden walls. Groot can continue building walls by right-clicking while building one. | 24 m radius and 40 m height for the passive field. |
| Furious Flora | V | Performs a close-range arm combo; the third hit slightly launches the target. | First two hits reach 3 m; third hit reaches 4 m. |
These figures are listed on the official Groot hero page. The September 8, 2026 Version 20260911 balance post specifically raised Ironwood Wall’s awakening bonus health from 40 to 50. That newer adjustment is reflected above; verify other exact values in-game if patch-level precision is important.

How Groot’s walls work
Thornlash Wall: pressure through team attacks
Thornlash Wall is the more direct offensive wall. When awakened, it strikes enemies that Groot or his allies attack. The practical implication is that its value depends on the enemy being within its effect and your team applying pressure there. Place it to support an engagement or restrict a route your opponents are using, rather than treating it as a standalone damage source.
Ironwood Wall: survivability while nearby
Ironwood Wall supports Groot’s staying power. While it is awakened, damage from Groot and nearby allies grants him bonus health, up to the listed cap of 250. Groot is also Unstoppable while within 15 m of an awakened Ironwood Wall. To use those benefits, fight close enough to the wall and coordinate its placement with the area your team intends to contest.

Awakening and proximity
Flora Colossus awakens nearby wooden walls, and its listed passive field has a 24 m radius. Because the wall effects rely on awakening and their listed benefits depend on enemies, allies, or Groot being in the relevant area, placement and proximity are central to the kit. Avoid placing a wall so far from the fight that its effect cannot support the engagement.
How to play Groot: practical decisions
1. Choose the space you want to control
Before placing a wall, identify the route, corner, or objective area where the next fight is likely to happen. Thornlash is suited to punishing enemies your team is attacking; Ironwood is suited to supporting Groot while he and nearby allies deal damage. Their functions differ, so choose based on whether the immediate need is pressure or survivability.

- LIVING ARSENAL: Frank Castle, or The Punisher, expertly wields a full arsenal of futuristic weapons and has a steadfast resolve to deliver justice to his enemies
2. Contest close space with a purpose
Groot has ranged options, but several parts of his kit reward fighting around a controlled area: Ironwood’s benefits depend on proximity, Furious Flora is a short-range combo, and Spore Bomb spreads damage around its blast. Move into close quarters when your team can support the contest, rather than relying on health alone to make an isolated push work.
3. Use Strangling Prison when allies can act on it
Strangling Prison pulls nearby enemies inward and imprisons them for 3.5 seconds according to the official page. Its grouping effect creates an opportunity for team follow-up. As a practical use, look for a moment when enemies are clustered or your allies are ready to attack the trapped group; using it without follow-up may waste much of its control value.

4. Keep dealing damage while walls are relevant
Vine Strike gives Groot a listed 22 m maximum attack distance, while Spore Bomb can add splash pressure and split into six spores. Attacking helps translate Thornlash’s awakened effect into pressure and can contribute to Ironwood’s bonus-health effect when Groot and nearby allies deal damage. Use the ranged attacks to stay involved while positioning around the walls rather than treating wall placement as the whole plan.
