Use the login-specific steps only if your crash happens during startup authentication or Steam cross-play login. These are troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes.
1. Check that your PC meets Grounded 2’s requirements
Compare your PC with the specifications Obsidian publishes for Grounded 2. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee a crash-free game, but Obsidian advises moving on to other troubleshooting steps if your system meets or exceeds them.

These are Obsidian’s published requirements, not an estimate of how often the game crashes. If a component is below minimum, the system may struggle to run the game; there is no single upgrade that fits every PC.
2. Update your graphics driver and restart
Install the latest graphics driver available for your GPU, then restart Windows before launching the game again. If the crash appears graphics-related and your GPU maker provides a clean-install option, Obsidian suggests trying it. A clean installation replaces the existing driver setup rather than simply layering an update over it.

3. Verify the game files
Missing or corrupted files can cause crashes. Use the file-check option for the launcher where you own the game.
Xbox app on Windows
- Check whether Grounded 2 has an available update and install it.
- If there is no update, open the game’s Manage > Files > Verify and Repair options.
- Let the check finish, then try launching the game again.
Steam
Use Steam’s built-in file verification procedure for the game. Obsidian recommends verifying the files but its crash checklist does not specify a Steam menu path.

4. Disable or remove mods
Grounded 2 is in Early Access/Game Preview and receives frequent updates. A mod that worked before a game update may become incompatible and cause instability. Disable or remove mods, then test the game without them before adding them back.
5. Install Windows updates and restart
Check Windows Update, install available updates, and restart the PC. Obsidian includes both checking for Windows updates and restarting afterward in its crash guidance.

6. Check temperatures, airflow, and overclocking
Obsidian Entertainment Support says in its “Grounded 2 is Crashing” guide, last updated August 25, 2026: “Random crashes and unexpected behavior can occur if your PC components, especially your CPU or graphics card, overheat.”
- If you overclock your CPU or GPU, disable the overclock while testing the game.
- Check that the PC’s air intake and exhaust areas are not blocked.
- If dust is obstructing fans, vents, or filters, clean those components carefully with an appropriate PC cleaning tool.
Cleaning is relevant if dust or blocked airflow is present; it is not a general-purpose crash fix.

7. Check BIOS guidance only for 13th- or 14th-generation Intel CPUs
If your PC uses a 13th- or 14th-generation Intel processor, Obsidian recommends installing the latest BIOS provided by your PC maker for a prebuilt system or your motherboard maker for a custom build. Advanced users can check whether the BIOS includes Intel microcode 0x12B or later. This specific advice is not established here for other CPU generations.

A crash during general gameplay calls for the checks above. Obsidian lists different workarounds for two login-related situations, so match the step to when the crash happens.

| Steam crash while logging in to cross-play | Obsidian’s July 30, 2025 support article says to install the Xbox app and repair Gaming Services. A separate hotfix from that date said version 0.1.1.2 fixed a Steam launch crash when Gaming Services was disabled; it also disabled cross-play unless Xbox Services were installed and the game restarted. That is historical context, not proof of a universal cause today. |
If the applicable workaround does not help, check Obsidian’s Known Issues and report the problem with enough detail to reproduce it. Include your platform, a short description, a screenshot or clip, reproduction steps, your save file or gamertag, and system specifications. Obsidian documents the save location as %USERPROFILE%Saved GamesGrounded2 and explains how to save a DxDiag report in its issue-reporting guidance.
