For most Story Mode players with a capable PC, choose GTA V Enhanced; on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, choose the current-generation Expanded & Enhanced edition. They deliver the same Michael, Franklin and Trevor campaign, but the newer builds add visual and technical improvements rather than new story missions. Choose Legacy on PC if your hardware cannot meet Enhanced’s requirements, you need an HDD install, or your Story Mode depends on older mods that have not been confirmed compatible.

On PC, Enhanced and Legacy are separate installs and storefront products, not graphics settings within one game. Rockstar launched Enhanced on PC on 4 March 2025 and renamed the previous PC build Legacy; Rockstar said Legacy would continue to be supported. The console Expanded & Enhanced versions launched on 15 March 2022.

What is different in Story Mode?
The campaign itself is the same scripted story in Los Santos: the same three protagonists, missions, map and endings. Rockstar’s Enhanced materials describe technical upgrades, not a new Story Mode campaign or story expansion.
What Enhanced adds to the campaign experience
- Improved lighting and reflections: ray-traced shadows and reflections are available on supported versions. On PC, Rockstar lists ray-traced ambient occlusion and global illumination for systems meeting its recommended specifications.
- Faster loading: Enhanced uses an SSD and DirectStorage on supported devices. The SSD is a requirement on PC, not merely an optional upgrade.
- More graphics options on PC: Enhanced supports higher-resolution and aspect-ratio options, with more frame-rate headroom than the console-locked last-generation versions. It also supports AMD FSR 1 and 3 and NVIDIA DLSS 3; a third-party guide reports DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation arrived on 12 August 2025.
- Spatial audio: options vary by platform and setup, including 3D audio, Tempest 3D Audio on PlayStation, and Dolby Atmos where supported.
- Controller feedback: DualSense adaptive triggers and haptics are supported on PS5 and in Enhanced on PC. Rockstar describes trigger resistance for effects such as weather, road surfaces, damage and explosions.
On PS5, the listed modes are Fidelity (native 4K with ray tracing at 30 fps), Performance (upscaled 4K at 60 fps) and Performance RT (upscaled 4K with ray tracing at 60 fps). Xbox Series X has current-generation graphics modes with ray tracing. Xbox Series S gets the same Story and Online content, but not ray tracing; published console coverage describes Fidelity as upscaled 4K at 30 fps and Performance as 1080p at 60 fps. Actual mode availability and output depend on the console and display.

What does not become part of Story Mode
Several prominent Enhanced features belong to GTA Online, not the single-player campaign. These include Hao’s Special Works, its vehicle upgrades and races, Career Builder, Career Progress, GTA+ benefits and the Wildlife Photography Challenge. The campaign does not gain the five Online-exclusive HSW cars as Story Mode vehicles. PC’s new landing page and menu are part of the game’s updated interface, but they are not additional campaign content.
Animal additions are also not a sound reason to upgrade for Story Mode: coverage describes them as GTA Online additions, while whether ambient animals appear in the campaign is not established here. Steam’s product description makes the distinction plainly, pairing visuals, faster loading and 3D audio with GTA V, then describing exclusive content for GTA Online players.
Which PC edition should I install?
Install Enhanced if your PC meets its requirements and you want the official visual and loading upgrades for a first playthrough or a mostly unmodded replay. Choose Legacy if the PC is older, has no suitable SSD, or relies on a mature collection of Story Mode mods.
Enhanced PC requirements
Steam’s requirements list the following baseline and recommended configurations. Storage figures are listed as 105 GB; Enhanced requires an SSD.

These minimum GPU specifications are not a promise of a particular frame rate. No authoritative frame-rate figure for the GTX 1630 or RX 6400 minimum tier is established here, so do not use a guessed 1080p performance estimate when deciding whether the game will run acceptably.

Legacy PC requirements
Legacy is the less demanding option in the listed requirements and can use an HDD. Rockstar’s current Legacy operating-system wording is Windows 10 64-bit; older Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8 requirement text is stale.

Enhanced’s listed storage footprint is smaller than Legacy’s, but it has the stricter drive requirement: 105 GB on an SSD rather than 125 GB with HDD support. If Enhanced reports “No DirectX 12 adapter or runtime found,” the PC is not exposing the DirectX 12 support it needs; check the GPU and Windows installation before treating the message as a save-file problem.
What published performance reports can and cannot tell you
A third-party compilation updated 29 October 2026 attributes its figures to published benchmarks dated 18 September 2026, not to its own hardware tests. It reports an RTX 4070 averaging roughly 100–110 fps at 1440p with maximum ray tracing, and about 35 fps recovered by reducing ray tracing from Maximum to Very High. For an RX 7800 XT, it describes mid-50s performance in some scenes at 1440p with Maximum RT, removal of sub-60 dips at Very High RT, and about 20 fps gained with FSR 3 Quality at Maximum RT. Those figures are specific to the cited configurations and settings, not guarantees for other PCs.
The same compilation reports 40–70 fps on a ROG Ally X at 1080p Very High without ray tracing, with ray tracing dropping below 30 fps. It relays PC Gamer’s published view that maximum ray tracing is not worth the performance cost and Very High is a better balance. For Legacy, it identifies MSAA as a particularly costly setting, Post-FX as a setting with a wide quality range, and grass as demanding at 4K; FXAA and tessellation are described as comparatively inexpensive. Treat these as attributed guidance rather than universal results.
Is Legacy better for Story Mode mods?
Usually, yes, if your priority is a large, already-working mod setup. Legacy has the more mature tooling and file-format support, while Enhanced’s compatibility has improved but is not complete across all mod managers and packages.

Script Hook V support for Enhanced is documented from 23 March 2025, and a 2026 modding guide says Legacy ASI plugins are compatible. That does not guarantee that every plugin or mod will work: mods need to be confirmed compatible with Enhanced or they may crash. OpenIV does not natively recognize Enhanced according to that guide and needs community shims.
For a vanilla or lightly modded replay, Enhanced is the stronger default if the PC qualifies. If a carefully assembled Legacy setup includes clothing, vehicles, maps or ENB changes, staying on Legacy avoids breaking that setup until its components have been checked individually. FiveM is a separate multiplayer framework rather than a Story Mode mod; its Enhanced support was described as Early Access in July 2026.
Rockstar’s 2015 position, quoted by a 2026 guide, was that players would not be banned for using single-player modifications. That is a dated statement, not a current blanket guarantee. Do not take Story Mode mods into GTA Online: modified multiplayer play remains a ban risk, and Script Hook V is described as closing the game if a player enters multiplayer.
Can you transfer a Story Mode save from Legacy to Enhanced?
Yes, on the same platform family, but the migration is a one-time, one-way move to Enhanced. You can overwrite the uploaded file before downloading it, but after Enhanced downloads a Story Mode save, that account cannot migrate Story Mode progress again.

- PC-to-console and console-to-PC transfers are not supported.
- Some profiles may be ineligible, including accounts with suspensions or bans, illegitimate progress, or insufficient progress.
- One save can be uploaded per account. The uploaded file is available for 90 days and may need to be uploaded again if it expires before download.
How to move the save on PC
- Upload in Legacy: open GTA V Legacy, pause the game, then choose Game → Upload Save Game.
- Select and confirm: choose the save, upload it and accept the confirmation alert. Wait for the Rockstar Games confirmation message before closing the game.
- Download in Enhanced from the landing page: open Enhanced, go to the Story tab, confirm the download and let the game load the migrated save.
- Or download from the pause menu: if Enhanced already has local Story saves, use Pause Menu → Game → Download Save Game, select the uploaded file, confirm and wait for it to load.
Rockstar’s migration instructions allow you to upload again and overwrite the cloud copy until the save is downloaded in Enhanced. The download is the irreversible step: Legacy remains playable, but later Legacy progress will not sync forward, and Enhanced progress cannot be copied back. Keep both PC installs if you want to choose between them, but do not expect them to share subsequent campaign progress.

Which console version is right for Story Mode?
For a current-generation console, buy or install the full Grand Theft Auto V product for PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. The standalone GTA Online listing does not include the campaign, so check that the product name includes Story Mode before purchasing.
PS5 and Xbox Series X offer the current-generation graphics modes; PS5 also supports DualSense features and Tempest 3D Audio. Xbox Series S retains the current-generation Story Mode content but omits ray tracing. PS4 and Xbox One versions still play the campaign, with weaker visuals and slower loading than the newer consoles. Rockstar Editor was removed from those last-generation versions on 20 February 2024, but that does not remove Story Mode.
If you own a last-generation copy, check the upgrade entitlement before buying again. Reports from GTA Zone, TechTimes and Rockstar Report say that from 18 June 2026, a PS4 disc or digital copy and a digital Xbox One copy unlock the current-generation version at no extra cost. A PS4 disc must remain in the PS5 while playing; Xbox One disc owners are excluded from that reported free upgrade. Confirm the offer and eligibility on the relevant platform store before relying on it.
What should PC buyers and existing owners know?
PC owners who already had GTA V received Enhanced as a free additional library version when it launched on 4 March 2025; the original build became Legacy. A new PC purchase can include both versions, so a modder and a player seeking Enhanced do not necessarily have to choose one permanently. Steam lists Enhanced as app 3240220 and Legacy as app 271590, which can help distinguish the separate installs in a library.
One 2025 PC Gamer listing put the Steam Premium Edition bundle at $29.95, and the Epic Games Store and Rockstar Games Launcher listings at $29.99. Those are dated prices rather than a reliable live quote; check your storefront and region before purchase. The Steam Enhanced listing snapshot was a localized Indian offer of ₹1,249, reduced from ₹2,499, ending 5 November 2026, not a US price or a durable MSRP.

On Steam, the Enhanced listing requires a Rockstar Games account and flags kernel-level BattlEye; it says BattlEye requires manual removal after uninstall. Legacy also uses BattlEye for GTA Online, but a 2026 third-party guide distinguishes its implementation from Enhanced’s kernel-level version. Since anti-cheat behavior and modding instructions can change, do not rely on an old workaround to toggle it for Story Mode.
Does the PC version play with friends on another build?
No: Enhanced and Legacy PC players are in separate GTA Online populations, and the PC versions do not cross-play with PS5 or Xbox Series. If you are choosing a build partly to join friends, match their exact PC version; this online limitation does not change the single-player campaign.

That separation matters less for a Story Mode-only player, but it explains why some people keep Legacy installed even after getting Enhanced. Console generations likewise have distinct Online versions, so a friend’s platform and edition should be checked separately from the campaign recommendation.
How should you make the final choice?
- Choose Enhanced on PC if your hardware meets the requirements, you have an SSD, and you want the best official visual and loading upgrades for the same campaign.
- Choose Legacy on PC if you use an HDD, have hardware below Enhanced’s minimum, or need a mature mod setup that has not been validated for Enhanced.
- Choose PS5 or Xbox Series X|S GTA V for the current-generation console campaign; remember Series S has no ray tracing.
- Keep the older console version or check its upgrade path if you own PS4 or Xbox One and want to avoid paying twice.
- Before migrating a save, decide which build will hold future progress. The transfer direction is one-way, and the destination download uses the account’s single migration.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play GTA 5 Story Mode offline?
Story Mode generally works offline after the game has been set up and activated, but account checks, cloud saves and updates may still require an internet connection. Rockstar’s current offline-launch requirements can vary by launcher, so confirm them with Rockstar Support if you need to play without connectivity.
Is GTA 5 included with Xbox Game Pass in November 2026?
GTA Zone reported that GTA V left Game Pass on 15 April 2026 across console, PC and cloud, including both Enhanced and Legacy. That departure was not independently confirmed against a current Xbox catalog listing here, so check Game Pass before subscribing specifically for the game.
Can I play GTA 5 on Nintendo Switch?
There is no official GTA V release for Nintendo Switch. Treat store or marketplace listings that imply otherwise as unofficial or misleading.

Does GTA 5 work on Steam Deck or Linux for Story Mode?
A September 2024 report says Story Mode can boot on Steam Deck or Linux, while GTA Online is blocked by BattlEye. Compatibility can change with Rockstar’s launcher and game updates, so that report is not a guarantee for every current setup.
