The fastest route to a huge Story Mode bankroll is a sequence, not a single trick: complete the required Hotel Assassination, use the story and heists to build capital, finish the campaign and The Big Score, then complete Lester’s other four assassinations while investing every protagonist’s cash in the mission-linked stocks. Keep a separate save before each trade, watch the portfolio’s actual Return Percentage, and sell when the rise has peaked in your current release.
This guide covers Grand Theft Auto V’s offline Story Mode economy. GTA Online has a separate economy and progression system, so online businesses, payouts and money methods do not apply here.

Which GTA 5 Story Mode method makes the most money?
Story missions and heists provide the cash you need early and through the middle of the campaign. The final heist is the largest one-time story payout, but crew cuts and crew skill determine how much reaches Michael, Franklin and Trevor. Lester’s assassination chain is the strongest multiplier because it moves stocks in a predictable mission-linked pattern and lets you invest a much larger pool after the story is complete.

Robberies, random events, races, taxi work, Bail Bonds, Arms Trafficking, collectibles and property income are useful supplements. They are finite, irregular or slow compared with the late-game stock sequence. There is no legitimate money cheat or genuinely infinite current Story Mode balance. A careful run can create an enormous but finite fortune; a practical per-character balance limit reported in current guides is $2,147,483,647.
#1 Best Overall
| Method | Best stage | Capital or payout profile | Repeatability | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Main missions and heists | Throughout the campaign | High; The Big Score is the largest story payout | No | Crew percentages and inexperienced crew can reduce the protagonists’ take |
| Lester assassination investments | Mostly after the final heist | Very high multiplier on saved capital | Five missions total; four can be delayed | Timing, platform behavior and BAWSAQ connectivity affect results |
| Random events, robberies, races and side activities | Early or mid-game, or as a supplement | Low to medium | Finite or irregular | Not competitive with late-game investments |
| Nuclear Waste | After buying Sonar Collections Dock | $940,000 gross reported for the complete collection | Finite | Requires the property and all collection work |
| Properties and businesses | Mid to late game | Varies; some unlock income or missions | Limited | Purchase cost can make the return slow |
Why the order of Lester’s missions matters
The Hotel Assassination is mandatory
Progression requires Franklin to complete The Hotel Assassination. Treat it differently from the other four Lester jobs: it cannot be postponed indefinitely if you want to advance the main story. Buy Betta Pharmaceuticals (BET) on BAWSAQ with all three available protagonists before starting it. After the mission, sell when the rise in your portfolio stops increasing. Once BET has been sold, Bilkinton Research (BIL) on LCN can be bought after its mission-related fall and sold at the recovery peak.
Save the other four assassinations
The Multi Target, Vice, Bus and Construction Assassinations are not required to finish the campaign. Leaving them until after The Big Score means Michael, Franklin and Trevor can invest the much larger balances produced by the story. Starting these jobs early does not permanently prevent completion, but it sacrifices the compounding effect on money that could have been invested later.
Finish the story first
Complete the main story and The Big Score before beginning the optional four. Preserve a manual save after the final heist. If the objective is to retain all three protagonists as investors, choose Ending C. You need each character’s separate cash balance and portfolio available for every trade.

- Play to the required assassination. Advance the campaign until Lester assigns The Hotel Assassination.
- Trade before the hotel mission. Switch to Michael, Franklin and Trevor, open each phone’s internet stock page, and invest the available cash in BET on BAWSAQ. Confirm that the BAWSAQ listing is available before launching the mission.
- Complete The Hotel Assassination. Advance time, check each portfolio and sell BET when its observed return has stopped climbing. Keep the pre-mission save until the sale and the next trade are secure.
- Buy the rival after the fall. Purchase BIL on LCN after its post-mission decline, then sell at the recovery peak. Do not use an old guide’s percentage as a guaranteed target.
- Continue the campaign. Do not start Multi Target, Vice, Bus or Construction while building story capital. Complete the remaining missions and The Big Score.
- Make a post-heist master save. Keep a clean save before the optional assassination sequence. This is your recovery point if a trade is mistimed or a market listing fails.
- Trade each optional mission with all three characters. Before a mission, switch among Michael, Franklin and Trevor and invest separately. A purchase by one protagonist does not invest the others’ cash.
- Advance time and monitor returns. Use sleeping or other in-game time advances, then inspect all three portfolios. Sell when Return Percentage reaches its current high and begins to flatten or decline.
- Complete the rebound trade. For missions with a rival-company recovery, wait for the initial stock to be sold and the rival to reach a low, then buy it. Keep the earlier save until both the fall and recovery have completed.
- Check BAWSAQ before every dependent mission. If listings are missing, reconnect the game to Rockstar services and verify the market before committing money. LCN is generally usable offline; BAWSAQ can depend on service availability.
Lester’s complete stock map
| Mission | Before the mission | After the mission | How to time the sale |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Hotel Assassination | Buy Betta Pharmaceuticals (BET, BAWSAQ) | After selling BET, buy Bilkinton Research (BIL, LCN) after its fall | Sell BET at the observed rise; sell BIL at its recovery peak |
| The Multi Target Assassination | Buy Debonaire (DEB, LCN) | Buy Redwood Cigarettes (RWC, LCN) after DEB is sold and RWC falls | Use the portfolio return, not a fixed historical percentage |
| The Vice Assassination | Buy Fruit (FRT, BAWSAQ) | Buy Facade (FAC, BAWSAQ) after the fall | Check that BAWSAQ is functioning before the mission and during the rebound |
| The Bus Assassination | Buy nothing | Buy Vapid (VAP, BAWSAQ) after the mission when the post-mission fall reaches a low | Wait for the low, then sell at the recovery peak |
| The Construction Assassination | Buy GoldCoast (GCD, LCN) | No second stock is required | Sell GCD at the post-mission peak shown in the portfolio |
Market movements vary by release, platform, timing and current market state. The displayed Return Percentage is the reliable signal for the save you are playing. A percentage printed in an older guide is historical guidance, not a promise for every current version.

How to maximize heist payouts
Choose crew for net payout, not just the headline split
The official game help explains that Michael, Franklin and Trevor select skilled crew members for their heists, and that crew members have different abilities and percentage cuts. A cheap but inexperienced crew member may make mistakes or reduce the amount ultimately shared among the protagonists. A higher cut can be worthwhile when the crew member’s skill protects the take or improves the operation.
Review each approach’s expected gross, every crew percentage and the likely loss from mistakes before confirming. The best choice is the one that leaves the largest reliable net amount, not automatically the one with the lowest listed cut.
The Big Score figures are conditional
A current guide reports $201,600,000 gross for The Big Score using its specified Obvious approach and crew, with up to $41,664,000 for each protagonist. Those are conditional guide figures, not universal guarantees: your approach, crew choices, mistakes and version can change the result. Treat the number as a ceiling for that setup rather than an entitlement.
Why heists still come first
You cannot compound a stock investment without starting capital. Heists and story missions supply that capital while also unlocking characters, equipment and the final payout. Side activities rarely provide enough cash to replace the campaign’s main income stream.

Supplemental ways to earn cash
Robberies and random events
Store robberies and armored security-van robberies can produce quick money, but they attract police and are finite or irregular. Random events may be worthwhile when encountered, especially early in the game, yet they are not a repeatable late-game wealth engine.
Nuclear Waste and Sonar Collections Dock
After purchasing Sonar Collections Dock, completing the Nuclear Waste collection is reported to pay $940,000 gross. It is a substantial one-time supplement, but the property purchase and collection work are prerequisites, and the activity cannot be farmed indefinitely.
Races, taxi work and other activities
Races, taxi work, Bail Bonds, Arms Trafficking and similar tasks are best viewed as spending money, progression or completion content. They can fund ammunition and early purchases, but their returns do not compete with the post-story assassination investments.

Properties can unlock missions or periodic income. Compare the purchase price with the expected income and how long you will keep playing. Buying every property immediately can tie up cash that would earn more in the Lester sequence.

Story-linked stocks outside Lester’s missions
Some campaign events have historically affected companies. A historical guide records Vangelico falling after The Jewel Store Job and recovering after Minor Turbulence, while FlyUS falls after Legal Trouble and recovers after Meltdown. These movements are useful context for players who enjoy experimenting with LCN, but the old percentages should not be treated as fixed current targets. The scripted Lester trades are the dependable plan; unscripted speculation is optional and carries timing risk.
LCN, BAWSAQ and save management
Know which market you are using
LCN is generally available in offline Story Mode. BAWSAQ may depend on Rockstar services, so a disconnected console or unavailable service can leave a required listing inaccessible. If a BAWSAQ stock does not appear, stop before the mission, reconnect services and confirm the symbol is trading.
Use separate saves for every trade
- Create a pre-mission save before investing.
- Use a second save after the initial sale and before buying a rival company.
- Keep the original until the rebound sale has completed.
- Check all three characters’ portfolios rather than assuming one trade applied to everyone.
Mission Replay does not transfer newly created investment profits into the main save. Replay can show how a mission works, but only the live campaign save preserves the wealth sequence.
Recommended Free Tools
Can Story Mode money be made unlimited?
No. The assassination chain is repeatable only in the sense that five scripted missions create several investment opportunities; it is not an endlessly regenerating market exploit. Mission Replay profits do not carry over, side activities run out or pay slowly, and the game’s practical balance ceiling limits how much can be displayed. The correct expectation is an enormous finite balance, not infinite money.

Common mistakes and fixes
Starting all Lester missions immediately
Problem: The optional four are completed before the protagonists have meaningful capital.
Fix: Complete only the required Hotel Assassination, then postpone Multi Target, Vice, Bus and Construction until after The Big Score.
Investing with only Franklin
Problem: Two-thirds of the available cash remains uninvested.
Fix: Switch to Michael, Franklin and Trevor before every trade and verify each balance and portfolio.
Using a fixed percentage from an old guide
Problem: The stock peaks earlier or later on your platform and save.
Fix: Watch Return Percentage and sell when the increase stops; preserve a save in case you sell too soon.
Ignoring BAWSAQ status
Problem: A required ticker is unavailable or does not update.
Fix: Check the service connection and listing before starting a BAWSAQ-linked mission. Use LCN trades when the mission calls for them.
Expecting Mission Replay to enrich the campaign
Problem: Replay cash appears in the replay result but not in the main save.
Fix: Make investments and complete missions in the active campaign, not only through Replay.
Quick Recap
Best practical plan by play style
| Your goal | Recommended approach |
|---|---|
| Fastest legitimate fortune | Follow the full sequence: Hotel trade, campaign, The Big Score, then all four delayed assassinations with three-way investing. |
| Enough money for normal play | Complete story heists, take convenient random events and use robberies or side activities for cash flow. |
| Completion and property ownership | Use the story payout first, then buy properties whose missions or income fit your remaining objectives; add Nuclear Waste for its one-time $940,000 gross. |
| Experimenting with markets | Use a separate save for historical LCN movements and speculative trades; do not risk the assassination capital. |
