Michael becomes playable after you complete Franklin’s early Story Mode mission “Complications.” Play through “Father/Son” and the next available objectives, then use the protagonist-selection wheel to choose Michael’s portrait. When you are controlling him, look for an M on the map; that marker identifies a Michael mission or objective. The exact switch button depends on your platform, edition and custom controls, so use Settings > Controls if the usual input does not respond.
What mission unlocks Michael in GTA 5?
“Complications” is the important unlock point. The early Story Mode begins with Franklin, and Michael is introduced through that mission rather than being selectable from the opening sequence. Completing it advances the game into the two-character section of the story.

Michael’s playable introduction continues with “Father/Son.” Finishing that mission and following the next available Story Mode objectives is what makes his personal mission chain appear. Unlocking the character and seeing a new Michael mission are related but not always simultaneous events: the game can require another character’s active objective, a phone call, or a prerequisite mission before the next M marker appears.
The progression in order
| Stage | What you do | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Franklin’s opening | Complete the introductory Franklin missions. | Advances the story toward Michael’s introduction. |
| “Complications” | Finish the mission normally. | Michael is introduced and the next part of the protagonist progression opens. |
| “Father/Son” | Complete the follow-up story mission. | Continues Michael’s introduction and makes later objectives available. |
| Later objectives | Follow the available story markers, calls and prerequisite missions. | Reveals Michael-specific missions, commonly shown with an M. |
How do I switch to Michael in Story Mode?
Once Michael is unlocked in your save, switching takes only the character-selection control and his portrait. The labels differ between keyboard controls, PlayStation, Xbox and custom layouts, so do not rely on one universal key or button name.

- Make sure you are playing Story Mode, not GTA Online.
- Use the control that opens the protagonist-selection wheel. On a controller this is normally the character-switch input; on keyboard it is the assigned character-switch key.
- Move the highlight to Michael’s portrait. If he has not been unlocked yet, his portrait will not be available as a normal playable choice.
- Release the control or confirm the highlighted portrait, depending on your platform and control scheme.
- Wait for the transition to finish, then open the map and check for an M marker or read the current objective.
If the wheel does not open, pause the game and review Settings > Controls. Custom bindings, alternate control schemes and platform differences can change the input. A mission may also temporarily block switching; in that case, continue until the game reaches the point where control is restored.
Where are Michael’s missions on the map?
Michael’s story missions are generally identified by an M map marker. Select Michael first, then inspect the map rather than assuming that a marker visible while playing Franklin or Trevor can be started by any protagonist.

Markers are not the only way a mission can become available. A phone call, text message or completion of a prerequisite objective can trigger the next event. If you have just completed a mission, allow the completion state to register, move away from the immediate mission area, and check the map again.
Reading the marker correctly
- M marker visible: Switch to Michael and travel to it unless the current objective gives different instructions.
- No M marker, but a story objective is active: Complete the currently available Franklin or Trevor objective; it may be the prerequisite for Michael’s next event.
- Phone call or message pending: Answer or review it, because the next mission may be delivered through that event instead of appearing immediately as a letter marker.
- Marker vanished after entering an area: Move out of the area, let the prior objective finish, and reopen the map.
Why can’t I switch to Michael?
The most common explanation is that Michael has not yet been unlocked, the game is restricting protagonist changes during an active mission, or the input is different from the one you are pressing. Check the story milestone first, then the mission state and controls.
Michael is not unlocked yet
If you have not completed “Complications,” the selection wheel cannot treat Michael as an available protagonist. Continue Franklin’s opening missions until that mission is complete, then play “Father/Son” and any newly available objectives.

A mission is temporarily restricting the wheel
Some story sequences deliberately keep you with one protagonist until a designated point or until the mission ends. Finish the current mission, reach the next free-roam section, and try the selection wheel again. Repeatedly pressing the switch input during a locked sequence will not bypass that restriction.

You are in the wrong game mode
The three protagonists belong to GTA 5’s single-player Story Mode. GTA Online uses its own character system, so the Story Mode selection wheel and Michael’s story markers are not available there. Return to a Story Mode save before troubleshooting the switch.
What should I do if there is no M on my map?
No M does not automatically mean that Michael is unavailable. The game may be waiting for another character’s mission, an unanswered call, or the completion of a preceding objective.
- Confirm the unlock: Verify that the save has completed “Complications.” If not, continue Franklin’s story until it is done.
- Play “Father/Son”: This follow-up mission is part of Michael’s introduction sequence. Complete it instead of leaving the story objective unfinished.
- Switch to Michael directly: Open the protagonist wheel and select him before checking the map again. A marker can be easier to interpret from the protagonist who owns it.
- Finish the active story objective: If Franklin or Trevor has a visible mission, complete it or follow its instructions. Michael’s next event may depend on that objective.
- Check calls and messages: Look for unanswered phone calls or newly received messages. Some mission starts are delivered through those events.
- Leave and revisit the area: Move away from an active mission location, allow the previous objective to register as complete, then reopen the map.
- Confirm Story Mode: If the pause menu or session is for GTA Online, leave it and load the single-player story save.
These checks address the normal progression and state conditions. They are preferable to restarting the entire game because an apparently missing marker is often a pending prerequisite rather than a permanent failure.

Can I switch characters during a mission?
Only when that mission allows it. Free-roam switching is available after Michael is unlocked, but scripted missions can disable the wheel, force a particular protagonist, or permit a switch only at a marked transition.
If the wheel stops working immediately after a mission begins, follow the on-screen objective until the restriction ends or complete the mission. When free roam resumes, try the switch again. Do not treat a temporary lock as evidence that Michael has been removed from the save.
How should I choose between Michael, Franklin and Trevor?
Choose the protagonist tied to the active objective rather than switching based on a permanent preference. Michael is the correct choice for an M marker or an objective that names him; Franklin and Trevor follow the same rule for their own markers and mission context.
When Michael is the right choice
- The map displays an M marker.
- The current objective specifically instructs you to control Michael.
- A call or message has just established a Michael-related event.
When another protagonist is required
- Franklin or Trevor has the only active story marker.
- The game is still completing a prerequisite mission in another character’s chain.
- The current mission has disabled switching until its next checkpoint or completion.
The practical distinction is mission availability and context. Once Michael is unlocked, selecting him does not permanently lock you out of Franklin or Trevor; the story determines which objectives are currently ready.
What if Michael’s missions still do not appear after the unlock?
Work through the progression in order instead of waiting indefinitely in one location. Complete “Complications,” play “Father/Son,” finish any newly active story objective, and then check Michael’s map while controlling him.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
If the map remains empty, look for a pending call or message and move away from the last mission area before checking again. A mission can be gated by another character’s objective even though Michael is already selectable. The absence of an immediate marker therefore does not prove that the unlock failed.
A practical recovery sequence
- Save or keep the current Story Mode session active so the completed mission state is retained.
- Complete the currently displayed story objective, even if its marker belongs to Franklin or Trevor.
- Return to free roam and select Michael from the wheel.
- Open the map and inspect the whole map for an M, not only the area around the last objective.
- Review the phone for missed calls or messages, then follow any newly issued instruction.
- If switching remains unavailable, finish the mission that is holding the restriction and retry afterward.
Does the platform change the Michael switch button?
Yes. The action is the same, but the displayed key or controller button can vary by platform, edition and custom binding. A universal label would be misleading, so use the control shown in your own game’s Settings > Controls menu.
The selection process itself is consistent: open the protagonist wheel, highlight Michael, and release or confirm the choice. If your input opens another menu, check whether the game is using an alternate preset or whether the current mission has disabled character changes.
What should a completed unlock look like?
A successful unlock has three practical signs: Michael’s portrait can be selected from the protagonist wheel, the game lets you enter free roam as Michael, and Michael-related objectives can appear through an M marker, a call or a prerequisite event. These signs may occur at slightly different points in the early story because the next mission is controlled by progression conditions.
Do not use the first appearance of a marker as the only test. If Michael is selectable but no M is visible, continue the available story objectives and check your messages. Conversely, if a marker appears but the wheel is locked, complete the mission segment that currently controls your protagonist.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I unlock Michael before completing “Complications”?
No. Michael’s playable introduction is tied to the early Franklin progression, with “Complications” serving as the required story milestone. The selection wheel will not provide him as a normal protagonist before that point in the save.
Does selecting Michael cancel the mission I was doing as Franklin?
A mission that permits switching handles the change through its own scripted rules, while a restricted mission simply keeps the wheel unavailable. Completed objectives remain recorded in the Story Mode save; switching protagonists is not a way to undo them.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why is Michael selectable but his next mission has not appeared?
Being able to select him proves the character unlock is complete, but the next event can still depend on another story objective, a call or a message. Continue the currently active mission chain and recheck the map after the game registers that progress.
Can I use Michael’s Story Mode missions in GTA Online?
No. Michael’s missions and the three-protagonist wheel belong to the single-player Story Mode campaign. Online sessions use a separate character and activity system.
Will replaying “Complications” unlock Michael again on another save?
Mission replay is tied to the save file you are currently using. To unlock Michael in a different Story Mode save, progress that save through the required story sequence rather than relying on a replay from another file.
