GTA 6 Interiors vs. Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA 5: How Building Access Changes Open-World Exploration

No—there is no official evidence that every building in GTA 6 will be enterable. The released footage does show a much denser set of authored interiors than GTA 5 normally exposes, including apartments, clubs, stores, gyms, work spaces, garages, safehouse rooms and a recording studio. That points to a broader interior layer, but Rockstar has not published a building count, an access percentage or a rule explaining which spaces remain available in free roam.

The more useful comparison is not a race to count doors. GTA 5 is primarily a street-and-vehicle sandbox, Red Dead Redemption 2 makes interiors meaningful through routines and emergent encounters, and GTA 6 appears to be combining a denser catalog of rooms with the same kind of inhabited-world design question. Until the finished game can be audited, treat every conclusion about access as provisional.

What the released GTA 6 footage actually proves

Rockstar’s official media library includes the launch trailer, Trailer 2 and Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look. The extended presentation is captured from in-game footage rather than a separate cinematic concept. In one sequence described in coverage of that presentation, Jason and Lucia enter an apartment block to retrieve a package, move through the building and switch between playable action and cinematic presentation.

Other official material and evidence reviews identify a range of built spaces: apartments, clubs, stores, gyms, work spaces, garages, safehouse rooms and a recording studio. These examples establish that detailed interiors exist in the game material Rockstar has shown. They do not establish that every room can be entered from the street, that each one remains available after a mission, or that a player can return to it at any time.

  • This product contains a download code inside the box — no disc is included. Customer shipments will begin arriving November 12 for pre-load; game is playable starting November 19. Code can only be used by users holding an account for PlayStation registered to the US or Canada.
  • Pre-order to receive the Vintage Vice City Pack.
  • Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.
Evidence in the footage What it establishes What remains unknown
Jason and Lucia move through an apartment block while retrieving a package An authored multi-room interior and an interior-to-interior sequence are present in the presented game material Whether the building is freely accessible, repeatable or available outside that sequence
Apartments and safehouse rooms Residential spaces are modeled as more than exterior façades Which residences are player properties, mission locations or temporary sets
Clubs, stores and gyms Commercial and activity-oriented interiors are represented Whether each has persistent services, changing occupants or free-roam entry
Work spaces, garages and a recording studio The interior vocabulary extends beyond simple shops and homes How often these spaces can be revisited and what activities they support

A trailer shot can prove that a room exists in the game’s presented material. It cannot, by itself, prove the entry method or free-roam status. A doorway may lead to a repeatable location, a mission-only set, a chapter-gated area or a scripted transition. Those distinctions are central to the comparison with the older games.

Can you enter every building in GTA 6?

No official Rockstar statement says that every building is enterable. Rockstar has also not confirmed a fixed percentage of accessible buildings or a complete free-roam access model. Claims that GTA 6 contains more than 700 interiors or that 70 percent of buildings can be entered should therefore be treated as unverified, not as specifications.

The distinction matters because “interior” can mean several different things. A room visible during a mission is an interior asset, but it may not be an open destination once the objective ends. A shop that opens through a marked door is different from a building that can be entered only during a chase. A seamless doorway is different from a cinematic cut to a separate location. Counting all of these as the same kind of access would make the result misleading.

Claim Status How to report it accurately
GTA 6 has 700-plus enterable interiors Not confirmed by official Rockstar documentation Do not present the figure as fact
70 percent of buildings are enterable Not confirmed by official Rockstar documentation Do not convert an estimate or rumor into a percentage
Every building can be entered Not confirmed Say that many authored interiors have been shown, while universal access is unknown
Interiors shown in trailers exist in the game material Supported by the footage Describe the location and clearly separate existence from access rules

The definitive answer requires the shipped game, a map of visible structures and repeatable tests after the relevant missions. Until then, the strongest defensible conclusion is directional: GTA 6 appears to expose more interior activity than GTA 5’s typical free-roam presentation, but no universal-access promise has been made.

How GTA 5 organizes exploration

GTA 5 gives players a broad free-roaming area spanning Los Santos and Blaine County outside missions. Its core loop is organized around roads, vehicles, missions and a comparatively small set of purposeful interiors. The city can look heavily built up from the street while still offering relatively few places where the player can cross a threshold and continue exploring.

That is a design choice rather than a simple technical failure. Exterior scale supports driving, pursuits, traffic and long-distance traversal. Interiors are concentrated where they serve a clear purpose: a mission location, a shop, a property, a club or another activity hub. The result is a world that is expansive in horizontal movement but selective about vertical and indoor movement.

Do not attach an official interior total to GTA 5. Rockstar has not supplied a definitive count that can be used as a baseline. The useful comparison is the texture of exploration: in GTA 5, players often read architecture from the outside and then follow a mission marker or known activity into a limited set of rooms. GTA 6’s footage repeatedly places Jason and Lucia inside authored spaces and shows action moving between exterior and interior locations.

Why Red Dead Redemption 2 feels more inhabited

Red Dead Redemption 2 is the stronger reference point for the feeling of inhabiting a world. Development reporting described Rockstar’s goal as making players feel that they lived in a world rather than merely completing missions and watching cutscenes. The moving gang camp made that idea visible: characters followed routines, performed chores, held conversations and reacted to time of day.

That approach changes what an interior contributes. A room matters more when a character returns to it, when an object can be handled, when a conversation can start there, or when a routine changes according to weather, time or story progress. A small number of spaces with persistent behavior can feel richer than a much larger number of empty shells.

Rob Nelson, Rockstar North co-studio head, described the exploration philosophy as: “There’s a whole lot of stuff that you discover emergently that we’re not necessarily directing you to through objectives or blips or icons on a map as well.”

That quote provides the right lens for GTA 6. The question is not only how many doors open. It is whether interiors create discoveries that are not reduced to objective markers: an unexpected conversation, a changing occupant, a useful object, a hidden route, a robbery opportunity or a consequence that connects the room to the surrounding city.

The six tests that make an interior meaningful

A fair comparison needs more than a raw doorway count. Use these six axes when evaluating GTA 6 against GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2.

RIDE 5 - PS5

  • 10RID052
  1. Access proportion: How often a visible building can actually be entered, rather than serving as a façade or distant backdrop.
  2. Access type: Whether entry is available in free roam, restricted to a mission, gated by chapter or time, or triggered only by a scripted transition.
  3. Continuity: Whether the player crosses a door directly, experiences a disguised loading transition or is moved through a cinematic sequence.
  4. Repeatability: Whether the room remains available after its first appearance and whether occupants, inventory or conditions change when the player returns.
  5. Activity density: Whether the interior supports shopping, robberies, conversations, minigames, loot, work tasks or another reason to visit again.
  6. World connection: Whether the room feeds NPC routines, emergent encounters, stealth routes, pursuit paths or environmental storytelling that can be noticed without a map objective.

These tests prevent two opposite mistakes. A game can have many accessible rooms that do little once entered, while another can have fewer rooms that remain memorable because they host persistent people and activities. Access proportion describes scale; activity density and world connection describe value.

What GTA 6 appears to be changing

The pre-release material suggests a denser interior layer than GTA 5’s usual free-roam rhythm. Apartments, clubs, stores, gyms, work spaces, garages, safehouse rooms and a recording studio indicate that Rockstar is authoring interiors across residential, commercial and personal contexts. The apartment-block sequence also presents movement through a building rather than a single room used as a static mission backdrop.

That evidence supports a direction, not a finished feature list. It does not tell us whether a visible club operates every night, whether a gym offers a repeatable activity, whether a garage is a persistent base or whether the recording studio can be visited outside its story scene. The same footage can contain both playable movement and cinematic presentation, so a viewer should not treat every camera angle as proof of continuous player control.

The strongest potential change is therefore qualitative as well as quantitative. If interiors connect to NPC schedules, optional encounters and multiple approaches to a problem, they could make the city feel more layered than GTA 5 without requiring every façade to open. If they are mostly one-time mission sets, the apparent increase in density will be visual rather than systemic.

Free-roam, mission-only and other access categories

When the game is available to audit, classify every interior using a consistent vocabulary. This avoids calling a scripted scene “free roam” simply because the player walks through it.

Category Definition What to test
Free-roam Enterable without a specific mission or cinematic trigger during ordinary exploration Leave and return later from the street
Mission-only Available only while a named objective or mission state is active Check whether the door or route remains usable after completion
Chapter-gated Open only after a story milestone or during a defined progression window Record the first point of access and whether it persists afterward
Time-gated Accessible only at certain hours or under a schedule Test several in-game times and note signs, occupants and services
Scripted transition Reached through a controlled sequence, cutscene or automatic move rather than ordinary navigation Determine whether the player can choose the route and control movement throughout
Decorative or inaccessible Visible from outside or through windows but not enterable by normal play Check all public entrances without treating collision glitches as intended access

This classification is especially important for comparisons with Red Dead Redemption 2, where a location can feel alive because people use it even if the player cannot freely enter every nearby structure. The meaningful question is what the interior does in the world, not merely whether its door opens.

How to perform a post-launch interior audit

A reliable comparison can be made without claiming that every building has been tested. Record the method and separate observed results from assumptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Define the sample: Choose a complete district, a representative street or a clearly bounded set of visible buildings. State whether the sample includes only ground-floor façades, underground spaces and rooftops.
  2. Map visible structures: Mark each building that appears to have a public entrance, service door, garage opening or visible interior. Do not count a building twice because it has multiple doors.
  3. Test ordinary entry: Approach each entrance outside a mission and record whether a prompt, animation, loading transition or open doorway appears.
  4. Repeat after story use: If a mission opens the space, return after completion. This separates a persistent destination from a one-time set.
  5. Check timing and progression: Repeat the test at different in-game hours and after relevant story milestones. Note whether access is locked, delayed or conditionally available.
  6. Measure continuity: Record whether the player crosses the threshold directly, experiences a loading screen or is moved by a cinematic. Use the same label for every location.
  7. Look for activities: Document shops, conversations, minigames, loot, work tasks, services and other interactions. A room with no repeatable activity should not be treated as equivalent to a functioning venue.
  8. Observe the world connection: Watch for NPC schedules, changing occupants, stealth routes, pursuit paths and events that can occur without a map icon. These observations address the living-world comparison with Red Dead Redemption 2.
  9. Publish the denominator: Report the number of buildings in the defined sample and how many fall into each access category. Do not extrapolate a district sample into a whole-game percentage unless the sampling method supports it.

This procedure also exposes why headline percentages are fragile. A result changes dramatically depending on whether mission interiors, apartments, tunnels, interiors behind loading screens and buildings with time-based access are counted together or separately.

How the three games differ in exploration texture

Game Primary exploration texture Interior lesson What cannot be claimed from the available evidence
GTA 5 Large free-roaming Los Santos and Blaine County organized around roads, vehicles and missions Purposeful interiors punctuate an exterior-first sandbox No official Rockstar total should be attached to its interior count
Red Dead Redemption 2 An inhabited world shaped by camp movement, routines, chores, conversations and time-of-day behavior Rooms matter when people and systems give them repeatable life Its benchmark is not universal access to every building
GTA 6 Pre-release footage shows repeated movement through authored residential, commercial and work-related spaces It may combine higher interior density with emergent discovery, but access rules are not yet quantified No official count, percentage or complete free-roam model has been published

GTA 5 demonstrates how effective an exterior sandbox can be without turning every building into a destination. Red Dead Redemption 2 demonstrates how routines and social behavior make a smaller set of spaces feel inhabited. GTA 6 will be judged by whether it joins those strengths rather than by whether it wins a simple door-count contest.

What players should look for when exploring GTA 6

Do interiors support unscripted discovery?

Watch for events that occur without a mission marker: a conversation overheard through an open doorway, a service that appears at a particular time, an occupant who leaves a trace, or an encounter that can be approached from more than one route. These are the kinds of discoveries that align with Rockstar’s stated exploration philosophy.

Can a room be revisited for a reason?

Return to locations after the first encounter. A store with changing stock, a gym with a repeatable function, a club with evolving activity or a workspace that affects a later mission contributes more to exploration than a room that disappears when its cutscene ends.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do interiors connect to pursuit and stealth?

Notice whether a chase can cross a threshold, whether an NPC can use a back entrance, or whether the player can hide, flank or escape through a building. Such connections make architecture part of play instead of decoration.

Do occupants behave like residents?

Compare the same room at different times. Persistent schedules, changing crowds and consequences for disturbing a space are stronger signs of an inhabited world than a large number of static props.

Are access restrictions legible?

A clear schedule, story requirement or service rule can make a locked door feel intentional. Confusing one-time access with permanent exclusion is a common source of inaccurate player counts, so record the condition under which each location opens.

Answers to the key comparison questions

Will GTA 6 have more interiors than GTA 5?

The footage supports a directional yes: it shows substantially more authored interior activity than GTA 5’s typical presentation. Rockstar has not released a comparable official total, so the size of the difference cannot be expressed as a verified number or percentage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does GTA 6 let you explore buildings like Red Dead Redemption 2?

It may share Red Dead Redemption 2’s emphasis on emergent discovery and an inhabited setting, but the available material does not establish that its access model is the same. The meaningful comparison will be repeatable routines, encounters and consequences inside spaces, not whether every building opens.

Are GTA 6 interiors free roam or mission only?

Both types are possible based on the footage, but no complete catalog has been published. Some shown spaces may be free-roam destinations, while others may be tied to missions, story progression, schedules or scripted transitions.

How many buildings are enterable in GTA 6?

There is no official number. Treat exact claims such as 700-plus buildings or a 70 percent access rate as unverified until Rockstar documents the count and defines what qualifies as enterable.

Why did Red Dead Redemption 2 feel more alive than GTA 5?

Its moving camp, character routines, chores, conversations and time-of-day behavior made spaces part of an ongoing social system. GTA 5’s strengths are broad traversal, vehicles and mission-driven activity; its architecture is more often experienced from the street. The difference is systemic behavior, not simply the number of open doors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

GTA 6’s shown interiors point to a denser and more authored indoor layer than GTA 5, while Red Dead Redemption 2 remains the benchmark for making places feel inhabited through routines and emergent discovery. The finished comparison will depend on access type, continuity, repeatability, activity density and connections to NPC behavior. Until those can be tested in the released game, the responsible verdict is a promising direction rather than a guaranteed percentage or universal building access.
