A hand-painted Grand Theft Auto VI mural is appearing in Brooklyn while a Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas advert from 2004 is still visible in the same city’s advertising landscape. Together, the two campaigns show how physical game marketing can outlive a release window: the older image has remained recognizable for more than 20 years, and the new work deliberately reconnects Rockstar Games with the mural company behind the earlier campaign. That is evidence of durable public art and cultural memory—not a measured study proving how many people remember the advert.
Where is the GTA 6 mural?
GTA BOOM reports that Colossal Media is hand-painting a GTA VI mural at Wythe Avenue and North 11th Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The location places the campaign inside the same New York outdoor-advertising ecosystem associated with the earlier San Andreas work. Because the mural is still being painted, its final appearance and how long it will remain are not established.

Rockstar’s official Grand Theft Auto VI page currently lists November 19, 2026, as the scheduled release date. It names PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as the launch platforms. A scheduled date can change, so it should not be treated as an irrevocable guarantee.
Why is the old GTA: San Andreas advert still visible?
GamingBible reports that the San Andreas mural was painted in Brooklyn in 2004 and remained visible more than 20 years later, even after unrelated advertising covered the surface. The report suggests that the later covering may have helped shield the older paint from weather and wear, but that explanation has not been proven experimentally.

What connects the GTA 6 mural to San Andreas?
According to GTA BOOM, Colossal Media directly linked the 2026 campaign to its first Rockstar assignment in 2004. The outlet reproduced the company’s statement:
“Twenty-two years ago, we painted our first campaign with our very first client, @rockstargames,” the company wrote. “Two decades later, we’re back at it for GTA 6. From Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas in 2004 to GTA 6 in 2026, tradition continues.”

The 22-year interval is Colossal Media’s description of the gap between the campaigns, as reported by GTA BOOM. It is a vendor’s account of a client relationship, not an independent advertising or academic study. The connection matters because the new mural is not merely another Grand Theft Auto placement: it is presented as a continuation of the same hand-painted practice.
How long can a game advert last?
There is no universal lifespan for a hand-painted game advert. Paint, wall condition, weather, maintenance, redevelopment and the arrival of subsequent campaigns all affect how long an image remains visible. The San Andreas example shows that an advert can persist for decades under particular urban conditions, while the eventual lifespan of the GTA VI mural is unknown.
What makes the San Andreas case unusual
- Long time horizon: the 2004 image was still reported as visible in 2026.
- Layered advertising: later work appears to have covered the mural, possibly helping preserve portions of it.
- Recognizable subject: the Grand Theft Auto branding makes the surviving image legible when it re-emerges.
- Renewed circulation: photographs and news coverage brought the old advert back into public discussion when the new mural appeared.
Those factors explain why “lasting” here means continued visibility and renewed conversation, not a quantified memory score.

What does the Brooklyn comparison reveal about game marketing?
The two murals make a useful comparison across medium, agency and place. Both are hand-painted outdoor advertising tied to Rockstar, and both sit within Brooklyn’s changing physical advertising environment. The 2004 work is an accidental survivor discovered through later coverage; the 2026 project is a planned campaign whose making is being documented as it happens.
| Aspect | San Andreas advert | GTA VI mural |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign year | 2004 | 2026 |
| Reported location | Brooklyn | Wythe Avenue and North 11th Street, Williamsburg, Brooklyn |
| Medium | Hand-painted outdoor mural/advert | Hand-painted outdoor mural |
| Known longevity | More than 20 years, according to GamingBible | Not yet established |
| Agency evidence | Colossal Media’s earlier Rockstar campaign | Colossal Media’s current Rockstar campaign, reported by GTA BOOM |
| Audience measurement | No published impressions or recall figure | No published impressions or recall figure |
This continuity also shows why physical advertising can become part of gaming history. A wall can preserve a release-era image after the media cycle has ended, and a later campaign can reactivate that older artifact without needing the original advert to have been formally preserved.
Can I still buy GTA: San Andreas physically?
Rockstar’s official store lists Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, released November 11, 2021, as a collection containing Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. The collection is the current official route to the remastered trilogy; physical stock, sellers, platform editions and regional availability can vary.

The old San Andreas advert is best understood as a documented piece of surviving urban game advertising. It does not prove that every viewer remembers it, or that mural advertising always outperforms digital campaigns. The stronger conclusion is narrower: a hand-painted release advert can remain physically present for decades, and a new campaign can deliberately use that continuity to connect a forthcoming game with the series’ material past.

Will the GTA VI mural remain after the game launches?
No duration has been announced. Outdoor murals can be painted over, removed during redevelopment or weather over, so the San Andreas advert’s survival should not be used as a guarantee for the new work.
Does the surviving San Andreas mural have a known address?
The cited coverage identifies it as a Brooklyn mural but does not publish a verified street address for the older advert. The documented address in the current reports is for the new work at Wythe Avenue and North 11th Street in Williamsburg.
