Can you play GTA 6 Online with friends? What Rockstar has confirmed about GTA 6
Rockstar’s June 24, 2026 pre-order announcement says: “Grand Theft Auto VI is a single player experience, coming November 19 to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.” The release date is scheduled, not a past release, as of October 7, 2026. Rockstar’s announcement and its official game page list those two console families.

That is the confirmed picture for the game in the official materials reviewed: Rockstar calls it single-player. Those materials do not confirm a distinct GTA 6 Online mode, but they also do not establish that an online mode will never exist.

There is no confirmed answer yet. Rockstar’s reviewed announcements and support information do not say whether GTA VI will have a separate online mode, when one might launch, whether it would be included with the game, or how players would meet up. No session or invitation system has been announced in those sources.

Cross-play is also unconfirmed. Although Rockstar lists PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, it has not said whether people using different platforms will be able to play together. Platform availability alone does not establish cross-play compatibility.

If you are deciding where to buy, your existing console ecosystem may be a practical consideration; it is not a guarantee that friends on the same console family will share sessions, or that players across platforms can connect.

What to know before buying
Rockstar’s support page says the physical version comes as a download code in a box, with no disc. Buyers of that physical-format package should therefore expect to download the game. The listing does not change the multiplayer uncertainty: buying GTA VI does not currently guarantee access to confirmed online play.
