Rockstar, Sony and Microsoft had not published an official GTA 6 download or install size as of 28 October 2026. The figure circulating now is a 210 GB PlayStation 5 Standard Edition listing scraped on 27 October, not a confirmed requirement; the Xbox size is also unconfirmed. Digital preload begins 12 November for the 19 November launch, so check the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store listing when preload opens and keep about 250 GB free if possible.
You may not need to buy anything. A PS5 with roughly 200–250 GB free can install the game internally, while an Xbox Series X with similar headroom can use its internal SSD. If you need more space, PS5 uses a compatible PCIe 4.0 M.2 NVMe SSD with a heatsink; Xbox Series X|S uses a licensed Storage Expansion Card. USB drives can archive games, but they cannot run GTA 6.

Do you need an expansion drive for GTA 6?
Only if the confirmed installation cannot fit alongside the games you want to keep installed. The launch is scheduled for 19 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with digital preload on 12 November. The standard edition has been reported at $79.99, but that price does not establish the storage requirement.
The most widely reported estimate is a 210 GB PS5 download for the Standard Edition, attributed to a PlayStation Network database scrape by PlayStation Game Size on 27 October. Gadgets360, HotHardware, AltChar, Playfront and gaming-st have reported the figure, but none turns it into an official Rockstar specification. Gadgets360 also notes that the report did not identify an Xbox size, and platform packages can differ.

Drawpie reported on 28 October that Rockstar, Sony and Microsoft had published no download size, install size or storage requirement. Treat 210 GB as planning information only, allow room for a day-one patch, and re-check the store page when preload begins. Japanese coverage has used approximately 250 GB of free space as a practical target.
What the unofficial 210 GB figure means for each console
| Console | Usable internal storage | Approximate space after a 210 GB install | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original PS5 (825 GB) | About 667 GB | About 457 GB | Usually enough unless many large games are installed |
| PS5 Slim (1 TB) | About 848 GB | About 638 GB | Usually enough |
| PS5 Slim Digital (2025, 825 GB) | About 667 GB | About 457 GB | Usually enough unless the drive is crowded |
| PS5 Pro (2 TB) | About 1.86 TB | About 1.65 TB | Very unlikely to need an expansion for GTA 6 alone |
| Xbox Series X (1 TB) | About 802 GB | About 592 GB | Usually enough unless the drive is crowded |
| Xbox Series S (512 GB) | About 364 GB | About 154 GB | Tightest case; an expansion card is sensible for a large installed library |
| Xbox Series S (1 TB) | Typically about 800 GB | About 590 GB | Usually enough for GTA 6 plus several games |
These are usable-after-system-software figures reported by current storage roundups, not the capacities printed on the boxes. Red Dead Redemption 2 occupies around 110 GB or more on PlayStation consoles, and the PS5 version of GTA 5 is reported at roughly the same scale; a 210 GB GTA 6 would therefore be about twice that footprint. If your console already has at least 200–250 GB free, Alligator Daily’s guidance is that you do not need to purchase a drive just for this launch.
How do you expand PS5 storage for GTA 6?
Install a PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD in the PS5’s internal expansion bay. This is the only added PS5 storage path that runs PS5 games directly, and the same requirements apply to the original PS5, PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro.
PS5 M.2 requirements
- Interface: NVMe PCIe 4.0 (Gen4 x4), M-key. M.2 SATA drives are unsupported.
- Capacity: 250 GB to 8 TB. Sony’s 8 TB ceiling has been supported since a 2023 system update.
- Performance: Sony recommends sequential read of at least 5,500 MB/s.
- Form factors: 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110; 2280 is the common retail size.
- Cooling: A heatsink or equivalent cooling structure is mandatory.
- Maximum envelope with the heatsink: 25 mm wide and 11.25 mm thick. Sony’s thickness split reported by PlayDesk is up to 8.0 mm above the board and 2.45 mm below it.
- Software: Update the PS5 system software before fitting the drive.
Gen5 SSDs operate at Gen4 speed in the PS5 slot, so paying extra for unused Gen5 bandwidth brings no benefit. Sony also cautions that it does not guarantee every drive that meets the published measurements; if a game behaves incorrectly on the M.2, move it to the built-in SSD.

Which PS5 SSD specifications matter for GTA 6?
Buy the heatsink-included version of a reputable Gen4 drive rather than a bare drive plus an oversized cooler. A fast SSD can still be unusable if its aftermarket heatsink prevents the slot cover from closing.
| Drive cited in current coverage | Capacity | Reported sequential read | Reported heatsink thickness | Other reported detail |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| WD_BLACK SN850X with heatsink | 2 TB | Up to 7,300 MB/s | 8.80 mm | 1,200 TBW; Amazon ASIN B0B7CKZGN6 |
| WD_BLACK SN850X | 8 TB | 7,200 MB/s | 10.31 mm | Within Sony’s 11.25 mm limit |
| Seagate FireCuda 530R with heatsink | 2 TB | 7,400 MB/s | 11.10 mm | Inside the published envelope |
| Samsung 990 PRO | 1 TB | 7,450 MB/s | 8.10 mm | Use a heatsink configuration that remains within Sony’s dimensions |
| SanDisk Optimus GX PRO 850P | 2 TB | 7,300 MB/s | 9.89 mm | Inside the published envelope |
Newegg Insider’s default capacity recommendation is 2 TB: it leaves room for GTA 6 and other large games without the cost and physical overcapacity of an 8 TB purchase. PlayDesk also lists the WD_BLACK SN850P 2 TB as a licensed PS5 drive. Prices and stock change frequently, so verify the current listing and the exact heatsink SKU.

How to install and configure the PS5 expansion SSD
- Update first. Install the latest PS5 system software before opening the expansion bay.
- Confirm the fit. Check the SSD’s length, width and complete heatsink thickness against the 2230–22110 and 25 × 11.25 mm limits. Do not assume a cooler sold for a desktop fits the console.
- Power down and fit the drive. Install the M.2 in the PS5 expansion slot according to the hardware guide for your console revision, securing the drive and replacing the cover without forcing it.
- Format when prompted. The PS5 formats a new M.2 on first use, erasing anything on it. Back up data before installation.
- Choose the install location. Open Settings → Storage → Installation Location and select the M.2 SSD for PS5 games if you want future installs there.
- Install GTA 6 completely on one drive. A game’s data cannot be split between storage devices. The full installation must fit on the internal SSD or the M.2.
After formatting, PS5 games run from the M.2 in the same way they run from the built-in SSD. The PlayStation GTA VI page describes the game as using the PS5 SSD for near-instant loading, which is why USB storage is not a playable target.
How do you expand Xbox Series X storage for GTA 6?
Insert a licensed Storage Expansion Card into the rear expansion slot. Xbox Series X|S has no user-accessible M.2 slot, and GTA 6 carries the Optimized for Xbox Series X|S designation. Microsoft’s rule, as reported by Drawpie, Alligator Daily, Geekblog and VGKami, is that Optimized titles run from the internal SSD or an official Storage Expansion Card; Microsoft says the card performs identically to the internal SSD.

Which Xbox expansion cards are compatible?
| Card family | Capacities reported | Price information in current coverage | Availability note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seagate Storage Expansion Card | 512 GB, 1 TB, 2 TB | Microsoft list prices reported as $89.99, $149.99 and $279.99; a 2 TB card was seen at $299 in late-October Walmart coverage | Original licensed card; 1 TB listing referenced by ASIN B08K48F6QZ |
| WD_BLACK C50 | 512 GB and 1 TB in Geekblog’s list; 2 TB retail reported in Europe | Live prices vary by market; a 2 TB listing was reported at €481.67 | Second licensed manufacturer, introduced in 2023 |
| SanDisk Optimus GX C50 | 512 GB, 1 TB, 2 TB | 1 TB launch price reported as $199.99; a 1 TB listing was reported at €212.99 | Microsoft-certified manufacturer announced around August 2026 |
Prices above are reported figures, checked in October 2026, not guaranteed current prices. Compare the capacity, stock and warranty in your region. An unlicensed NVMe drive in a USB enclosure is not a substitute for an Xbox Expansion Card.
How to install an Xbox Series expansion card
- Update the console first. Drawpie reports Microsoft’s instruction to complete the console’s first update before plugging in a card.
- Shut down the Xbox. Insert the licensed card fully into the rear expansion slot; do not use a USB adapter or hub.
- Let the console detect and prepare it. Follow the on-screen storage setup and formatting prompts, preserving any data already on a used card before accepting an erase operation.
- Verify the destination. In the console’s storage management screen, confirm the card appears and set it as the destination for new games if desired.
- Install GTA 6 on internal storage or the card. The game must remain on one of those fast paths to run.
An internal Xbox SSD replacement is a teardown procedure. HotHardware points to an iFixit guide but describes the process as substantially riskier than using the rear expansion slot; it is not a sensible GTA 6 storage upgrade for a typical owner.
Can GTA 6 run from a USB drive?
No. USB storage is an archive and transfer tool for this game, not a native-play destination.
On PS5, a USB SuperSpeed drive rated at 5 Gbps or faster and between 250 GB and 8 TB can hold PS5 games that you are not playing. To launch one, copy it back to the internal SSD or the M.2 expansion. PS4 games can run directly from USB.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
On Xbox, Series X|S-optimized games can be stored on a USB drive but must be moved back to the internal SSD or an official expansion card before play. Xbox One and backward-compatible games can continue to run from USB.
That makes a 2 TB USB Game Drive useful for clearing space: move older games to it, install GTA 6 on the required fast storage, and copy an archived title back when you want to play. HotHardware cited a Seagate 2 TB Game Drive at about $139.99 at Best Buy in its coverage; street pricing is volatile.
Should you buy 1 TB or 2 TB?
Choose capacity based on the number of large current-generation games you intend to keep installed, not on GTA 6 alone. A 210 GB installation leaves substantial room on most PS5 models and on Xbox Series X, but it consumes more than half of a 512 GB Series S’s usable space.
- 1 TB expansion: A reasonable starting point for an Xbox Series X|S owner who mainly needs GTA 6 plus a handful of other games. On PS5, a 1 TB M.2 adds useful headroom but may be filled quickly by several 100 GB-class titles.
- 2 TB expansion: Newegg Insider’s PS5 recommendation and the practical choice if you keep a large library installed. It also avoids repeatedly moving games on a 512 GB Series S.
- 8 TB PS5 expansion: Sony’s maximum supported capacity, but generally unnecessary unless the console is a long-term, all-digital library and the price premium is acceptable.
The Xbox 2 TB console line was discontinued on 1 August 2026, according to PlayDesk. Existing 2 TB consoles still use the same licensed-card expansion rule; discontinuation does not create a different storage interface.

What should you do before the 12 November preload?
- Check free space now. Record the available space on the console’s storage screen. Do not rely on the advertised 825 GB, 1 TB or 2 TB label; operating-system space is reserved.
- Target about 250 GB free. The 210 GB figure is unofficial and a day-one patch may increase the final footprint.
- Remove or archive games you can restore. Use USB storage for PS5 and Xbox games that are not being played, remembering that current-generation titles must be copied back before launch.
- Buy hardware only if the library will not fit. Select a PS5 M.2 that meets every Sony dimension and speed requirement, or an Xbox card carrying an official license.
- Check the store listing at preload. On 12 November, compare the live download and required-space figures with your free capacity. The Xbox figure may differ from the PS5 package.
- Leave patch headroom after installation. Do not fill the drive to its last few gigabytes; Rockstar games can grow with updates.
What are the common storage mistakes?
- Treating 210 GB as official. It is a 27 October PS5 database scrape. Rockstar, Sony and Microsoft had not confirmed it by 28 October.
- Buying a bare PS5 SSD without a suitable heatsink. The heatsink is required, and the assembled drive must stay within 25 mm width and 11.25 mm thickness.
- Using M.2 SATA or a Gen3 NVMe in the PS5 slot. The supported interface is PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe; Sony recommends at least 5,500 MB/s sequential read.
- Assuming a USB SSD is fast enough to run GTA 6. USB can store the game, but the game must be moved to the internal or approved expansion path to launch.
- Putting an Xbox NVMe in an enclosure. Xbox Series native-play expansion requires a licensed rear-slot card.
- Splitting an installation across drives. The complete game must fit in one location.
- Forgetting the format erase. A newly installed PS5 M.2 is formatted on first use, deleting existing data on that drive.
- Buying on an old price quote. Xbox card prices and stock move weekly; verify the live regional listing before ordering.
How we picked the expansion paths
The choices above follow the consoles’ published storage rules and the game’s platform requirements: whether the hardware can run PS5 or Xbox Series games directly, the interface and physical limits, supported capacities, and the difference between native-play storage and archival USB storage. Capacity recommendations also account for the reported 210 GB PS5 scrape, an expected patch buffer and the usable space on each console model.
What is the practical recommendation?
First, free roughly 250 GB and wait for the official store size on 12 November. If the game fits, keep your money. If it does not, install a heatsink-equipped PCIe Gen4 M.2 NVMe in a PS5, or add a licensed Storage Expansion Card to an Xbox Series X|S. Use USB only to park other games and create room.

Will the boxed GTA 6 copy save storage space?
No. Current reports from Drawpie and Juked say boxed copies contain a download code rather than a playable disc. Plan for the same full download and installation space as a digital purchase.
Can I move GTA 6 between the PS5 internal SSD and an M.2 drive?
Yes. PS5 lets you move installed games between the built-in SSD and a compatible M.2, but the complete game must reside on one drive when you play it. The same one-location rule applies when managing Xbox Series installations between internal storage and an expansion card.
Does the Xbox Series S need a different expansion card from Series X?
No. Series X and Series S use the same licensed Storage Expansion Card format. The 512 GB Series S is simply more likely to need one because about 364 GB is usable internally.
Could the final Xbox download be smaller than 210 GB?
It could. The 210 GB report is tied to a PS5 Standard Edition scrape and did not specify Xbox; platform packages can differ. Treat the Xbox figure as unconfirmed until Microsoft’s store listing shows the requirement.
Is a PS5 Pro’s 2 TB drive enough without expansion?
The PS5 Pro has about 1.86 TB usable, leaving approximately 1.65 TB after a 210 GB installation estimate. Expansion is therefore unlikely to be necessary for GTA 6 alone, though a very large installed library can change that decision.
