What do wanted stars mean?
A wanted level signals that law enforcement is responding to your character. Crimes that attract police attention can start a wanted level; resisting or remaining in pursuit can escalate it. There is no reliable one-to-one crime-to-star chart to apply in every situation, so treat the stars as a measure of the current response rather than a fixed penalty for a specific action. The community-maintained GTA Wiki overview of GTA V wanted levels describes the broad behavior, but exact values and thresholds should be treated cautiously.

How to lose the police in Story Mode
- Stop giving police a clear view. Turn away from officers and their vehicles rather than driving straight back into their sight.
- Break line of sight. Use streets, buildings, or terrain when they help you get out of view; none is a guaranteed hiding spot in every chase.
- Stay hidden while the search continues. Avoid emerging where police can reacquire you, and wait for the stars to disappear.
This is the dependable general approach, not a fixed countdown: the available references do not establish a universal pursuit timer or a route that always works.
How GTA Online differs
GTA Online has mode-specific wanted behavior and options, and availability can depend on the current activity or game update. Do not assume an Online service, fee, unlock, or removal method applies in Story Mode—or that it is currently available to every Online player. If considering an immediate removal option mentioned by secondary guides, check the in-game phone or menus for what is offered in your session. Wanted levels in creator activities
Some activities define their own wanted-level behavior. Rockstar’s official GTA Online — Race Creator guide says: “Enabling Wanted Level allows the police to chase Race participants during the course.” That setting concerns creator-made races; it does not establish a general escape rule for every Online activity.
