guid.dll Is Missing or Not Found: How to Fix It on Windows 11 and 10

“The code execution cannot proceed because guid.dll was not found” means Windows or a program could not load a required dynamic-link library. The message identifies the missing-library symptom, not its cause. A damaged application install, corrupted Windows component files, an incomplete update, malware tampering or a file-system problem can all produce it. Restart first, note whether the dialog appears during startup or only in one game or application, then update Windows and the affected program. Repair that program with its official installer when the problem is isolated; use Microsoft’s DISM and SFC tools for suspected Windows corruption; scan with Windows Security when malware is plausible; and use Windows Recovery Environment or official installation media only when less disruptive options fail.

What does a “guid.dll is missing” error mean?

A DLL (dynamic-link library) contains code that Windows programs load when they need a particular function. A dialog mentioning guid.dll, “guid.dll was not found,” or “The code execution cannot proceed” means the loader could not find or read the library expected by that process. It does not tell you whether the file was deleted, damaged, blocked, never installed, or unrelated to the copy of Windows itself.

Read the complete dialog and record the executable or game named in it. The same filename can appear in an application-specific error and in a broader Windows startup problem, and those situations require different repairs.

Is a missing guid.dll message proof of malware?

No. The message alone is not evidence of an infection. Corrupted or deleted Windows files, an incomplete or damaged application installation, a failed update, malware tampering and file-system errors are all plausible diagnostic categories; Microsoft does not publish a guid.dll-specific cause distribution.

Do not “fix” the alert by downloading a loose copy of guid.dll from an unofficial DLL website. That file may be the wrong version or architecture, may be modified, and does not repair the underlying installation. Use the affected publisher’s installer, Windows repair tools, Windows Recovery Environment or official Microsoft installation media instead.

What should I check before changing system files?

  1. Capture the scope. Write down the exact wording, the program named in the dialog and when it appears. A message only when launching one game points first to that game’s files; a message before the desktop appears suggests a Windows startup or service dependency.
  2. Restart once. A locked file or an update waiting for a reboot can produce a one-time load failure. If the message returns, continue rather than repeatedly restarting.
  3. Install pending updates. In Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates; install available updates and restart. Use the affected application’s own update mechanism as well.
  4. Protect your data. Before recovery, reset or reinstall operations, copy important documents, game saves, photos and other irreplaceable files to a separate drive or trusted backup. Keep application installers, activation details and any recovery keys available.

How do I fix guid.dll when only one game or application is affected?

An application-specific failure is best repaired with that publisher’s supported maintenance path rather than by replacing a DLL manually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repair or reset from the application’s own tools

Open the launcher or Windows app settings and look for labels such as Repair, Verify files, Scan and repair or Reset. The exact label varies by publisher. Run the least destructive option first, then restart Windows and test the program.

Reinstall from an official source

If repair does not restore the library, uninstall the affected application, restart, and install the current version from its official publisher or your legitimate game store. Do not delete personal saves unless the publisher’s instructions require it; back them up first. Keep the installer and license information so you can restore the program without relying on an unverified download.

When a reinstall does not help

If several unrelated programs report missing DLLs, or the same dialog appears during startup, treat the issue as potentially system-wide and move to the Windows component repair procedure below. Reinstalling one game cannot repair a damaged Windows component store.

  • Store more with capacities up to 8GB (1 gigabyte (GB) = 1 billion bytes. Some capacity not available for data storage.)

How do I run DISM and SFC to repair Windows files?

For suspected Windows file corruption, Microsoft directs users to run Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) before System File Checker (SFC). DISM repairs the Windows component store and supplies files that SFC may need; SFC checks protected Windows files and replaces corrupted copies from the local cache. Microsoft’s documented order is stated in its System File Checker guidance: “You should run DISM prior to running the System File Checker.”

Run the commands in an elevated terminal

  1. Save work, open Start, type Command Prompt or Windows Terminal, right-click the result and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  2. Enter this command exactly, then press Enter:
    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  3. Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window because progress can pause for a while. A successful completion message indicates that the servicing operation finished; it does not by itself prove that every application will work.
  4. Run SFC next:
    sfc /scannow
  5. Allow the scan to reach 100 percent before closing the terminal. Restart Windows, then launch the program that displayed the guid.dll error.

If SFC reports that it found and repaired files, restart before testing. If it reports that no integrity violations were found but the same application still fails, return to that application’s official repair or reinstall path; the missing library may belong to the application rather than Windows.

How do I check for malware safely?

Use Windows Security when the error appeared after a suspicious download, an unexpected system change, disabled security features or other signs that files may have been tampered with. Microsoft’s Virus and threat protection guidance explains the available scan options.

  1. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
  2. Install any available security-intelligence updates, choose Scan options, and run a Full scan.
  3. For a persistent-threat concern, choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save work first: the PC restarts and scans before normal Windows loads, which makes it harder for malware to hide or interfere. Microsoft’s malware troubleshooting guidance is available at Troubleshoot problems with detecting and removing malware.

Follow Windows Security’s recommended actions and restart when requested. If malicious changes have made Windows unreliable, copy data from a clean backup and use the recovery choices below rather than repeatedly replacing individual files.

What can I do if Windows will not start normally?

When the guid.dll dialog appears before you can reach the desktop, use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). Microsoft describes WinRE and its entry points in Windows recovery environment.

Try Startup Repair first

From WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair. Startup Repair attempts to correct startup problems such as damaged system files and boot-configuration data; Microsoft’s feature description is at Startup Repair. Let it complete and restart once.

Use System Restore when a restore point exists

If the failure began after a driver, update or software change and a restore point is available, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore. Select a point dated before the problem. System Restore rolls back system files, drivers and settings while leaving personal files in place, but applications or updates installed after that point may need to be installed again.

Uninstall a recent update

In WinRE, open Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates and use the option that matches the timing of the failure. This is useful when the error started immediately after a quality or feature update and Startup Repair did not resolve it.

Can Windows 11 reinstall itself without removing my apps?

Windows 11 includes a recovery option to reinstall the current version while preserving apps, files and settings. Microsoft documents this approach in Fix issues by reinstalling the current version of Windows. Use it after DISM/SFC and application repair have failed, and back up important files first even though the option is designed to preserve them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Follow the exact prompts shown for your edition and build. Keep the computer connected to power, do not interrupt the restart cycle, and test the previously failing program after Windows finishes.

When should I reset Windows or use installation media?

Reset this PC or a clean reinstall is a last resort when repair, malware cleanup and WinRE options cannot restore a usable system. Microsoft’s Recovery options in Windows explains that Reset reinstalls Windows and lets you choose whether to keep personal files, while applications and settings are removed. Back up files before selecting it, and ensure you can reinstall programs and restore game saves afterward.

Create official Windows 11 installation media

  1. Use Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page and its Media Creation Tool or ISO instructions. The media is intended for supported hardware.
  2. Use a blank USB flash drive or blank DVD with at least 8GB of capacity. Microsoft warns that creating bootable media deletes the content already on that device, so copy anything on it elsewhere first.
  3. Before reinstalling, verify the target PC’s Windows edition, language and architecture. Choosing incompatible media can create activation or driver problems.
  4. Boot from the USB when required. The manufacturer may require a boot-menu key or a change to boot order; the exact procedure varies by PC.
  5. Choose the least destructive installation option that addresses the failure. A clean install removes existing apps and data from the Windows installation, so proceed only after confirming your backup.

Which recovery option should I choose?

Situation First choice What it preserves or changes External media needed?
One game or application fails; Windows otherwise works Official repair, file verification or reinstall for that application Targets the affected program; personal files are normally left alone, but follow the publisher’s save-data instructions No
Several programs fail or Windows files appear corrupted DISM, then SFC Repairs the component store and protected system files without reinstalling Windows No
Malware is plausible Full Windows Security scan; Defender Offline for a persistent-threat concern Scans in normal Windows or before Windows loads; Offline scan restarts the PC No
Windows cannot boot WinRE Startup Repair, then System Restore or update removal when appropriate Attempts startup repair or rolls back system changes; restore points do not remove personal files Usually no; WinRE availability varies with the installation
Windows 11 still fails after repair Reinstall the current Windows 11 version, if offered Designed to preserve apps, files and settings Not necessarily
All less disruptive choices fail Reset this PC or official installation media Reset can keep personal files but removes apps and settings; a clean install removes the existing installation Reset: no; installation media: yes

Choose the least disruptive option that matches the scope of the failure. A restore point must exist for System Restore, and a USB reinstall requires a separate backup because creating the media erases the USB’s contents.

What does Windows 10 support ending mean for this error?

Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, including free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance and security fixes. You can still use the documented application repair, DISM/SFC and recovery procedures to address an immediate guid.dll failure, but a Windows 10 PC no longer receives the same ongoing support. If the hardware meets Windows 11 requirements, plan a supported migration after your files and application data are backed up.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I verify that the repair worked?

  • Restart after DISM/SFC, malware remediation, System Restore, update removal or reinstall operations when Windows requests it.
  • Open the exact game or application that produced the dialog and repeat the action that originally failed.
  • Check whether other programs can start normally. A system-wide improvement matters more than one successful launch.
  • Install remaining Windows and application updates only after the machine is stable, and keep a current backup before making further recovery changes.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for and fix more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, while also offering cleanup and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; its free trial is category-limited (at least two days) before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, and no utility repairs every crash.

Frequently asked questions

Can a guid.dll error be limited to a single user account?

Yes. Per-user application data, permissions or a damaged profile can make one Windows account fail while another account can launch the same program. If the publisher’s repair works in a new test account but not the original one, preserve the affected account’s files and use the publisher’s support instructions before deleting profile data.

What should I back up before using Reset this PC?

Copy documents, photos, desktop files, browser exports, locally stored game saves and project folders to a separate drive or trusted backup. Also record application licenses, two-factor-recovery codes and any settings that are not synchronized to an account; Reset removes installed applications even when you choose to keep personal files.

Can I use an existing USB full of files to create Windows installation media?

Not safely. The media-creation process formats or overwrites the selected USB, so move its contents elsewhere and use a blank drive with at least 8GB. Verify the drive letter before starting because choosing the wrong removable drive can erase unrelated files.
