Expansions are the large, paid feature releases in Guild Wars 2; Living World seasons are level-80 episode arcs that carry the story and progression between those releases. An expansion typically arrives with a major region package and headline systems such as gliding, mounts, elite specializations, or raids. A season unfolds as a sequence of episodes, adding maps, events, Masteries, achievements, collections, rewards, and other horizontal progression.
The buying rules changed on October 13, 2026. Seasons are no longer sold one at a time: the base game includes Seasons 1 and 2, the Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire bundle includes Seasons 3 and 4, and End of Dragons includes Season 5, The Icebrood Saga. The Elder Dragon Saga collection combines the first three expansions with Seasons 3–5.

Expansion or Living World season: the practical difference
An expansion is a single, substantial release built around a new chapter of the game. Its content is delivered as one package and usually introduces several maps alongside systems that affect every character on an account. Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire show the scale clearly: one brought gliding, elite specializations, raids, and four Heart of Maguuma maps; the other brought mounts, nine elite specializations, raids, and five Crystal Desert maps.
A Living World season is an episodic continuation. Episodes are written for level-80 characters and move the world forward after an expansion’s main arc. They can still be large additions rather than short cut-scenes: ArenaNet describes them as adding explorable maps, unique rewards, achievements, Masteries, and other horizontal progression. A season’s maps and activities are spread across multiple releases, so its shape is a sequence of connected chapters instead of one expansion launch.

ArenaNet describes Guild Wars 2’s narrative as spanning six expansions and five Living World seasons. That count is useful for understanding the structure, but it does not mean that buying any one expansion grants every earlier release.
What an expansion includes
Expansions are where the game’s most visible system changes normally arrive. They combine a new story arc with maps, progression tracks, and activities that remain useful after the launch chapter is complete.
Heart of Thorns
Heart of Thorns adds four Heart of Maguuma maps. Its feature package includes gliding, three raids, elite specializations, and the Mouth of Mordremoth open-world boss. The maps and the gliding system are linked: vertical terrain and aerial routes are part of how the Heart of Maguuma is explored, while the Mastery and collection systems provide account-wide progression beyond the campaign chapters.
Recommended Free Tools
The expansion’s raids and open-world boss are separate from the story episodes that follow it. Owning Heart of Thorns therefore gives access to the expansion’s own features, but it does not by itself establish ownership of every later Living World chapter.
Path of Fire
Path of Fire adds five Crystal Desert maps, mounts, three raids, and nine elite specializations. Mounts change movement across the entire game world, while the Crystal Desert maps provide the expansion’s principal exploration areas. As with Heart of Thorns, its story and systems are an expansion package; later Living World content is a separate entitlement unless it is included in the product you purchased.

End of Dragons and the wider expansion catalogue
End of Dragons is part of the current Elder Dragon Saga collection alongside Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire. The collection page treats those three named expansions as one purchase path and adds Living World Seasons 3, 4, and 5. The available material does not assign a map, raid, mount, or elite-specialization count to End of Dragons here, so those details should be checked on its own product page rather than inferred from the other expansions.
Do not assume that a newer expansion contains all previous ones. ArenaNet’s Janthir Wilds FAQ explicitly says that Janthir Wilds does not include Heart of Thorns, Path of Fire, End of Dragons, or Secrets of the Obscure. Expansion ownership is therefore package-specific: read the entitlement list for the exact product, especially if you are assembling a collection over several purchases.

Living World episodes are level-80 story chapters that open new areas and add progression without being marketed as a full expansion. Their value is broader than the cut-scenes: each season can add maps, events, achievements, Masteries, collections, currencies, and rewards that remain part of the endgame after the story is finished.
Season 1
Season 1 is the first Living World chapter after the core Guild Wars 2 story. Under the current acquisition model it is free with the base game. It establishes the transition from the core campaign into the later Elder Dragon narrative, so it belongs before Season 2 in a first playthrough.
Season 2
Season 2 is also free with the base game as of October 13, 2026. ArenaNet’s official story descriptions list eight episodes. It continues the post-core narrative and leads directly into Heart of Thorns, making it the final Living World season before that expansion in story order.

- Explore the Maguuma Jungle and the far reaches of the Crystal Desert with Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire in one purchase.
- MASTER YOUR GLIDING SKILLS - Gain access to the glider so that you can glide like a squirrel across the highest points of the Heart of Maguuma. Mastering jungle movement will unlock the ability to hang glide to previously unreachable locations.
- INTRODUCING MOUNTS that are far more than a speed boost— they're new ways to move throughout Tyria. Unlock and train your companions while exploring freely—leaping across canyons, scaling towering cliffs, and skimming over water and quicksand.
- ELITE SPECIALIZATIONS - Each expansion includes access to nine new elite specializations. With a variety of playstyles, weapon choices, and traits to choose from, there are more options than ever to help you customize your character.
- Comes with 1 Level 80 Booster & shared inventory slot – If you can’t wait to see the expansion content, this Booster will put you at max level so you can start your journey in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorn & Path of Fire right away!
Season 3
Season 3 follows Heart of Thorns and is listed with six episodes in ArenaNet’s episode descriptions. It adds level-80 maps, rewards, achievements, and Mastery-driven progression while dealing with the consequences of the Heart of Thorns arc. The episode-access model identifies Heart of Thorns as its prerequisite; the current Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire bundle includes the season, so a buyer using that bundle receives the entitlement together with the two expansions.

Season 4 follows Path of Fire. Its episodes continue the post-expansion story and use the same Living World pattern of explorable maps, events, collections, achievements, and rewards. ArenaNet’s episode information identifies Path of Fire as the prerequisite under the episode-access model. Season 4 is now included in the Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire bundle.
Season 5: The Icebrood Saga
Season 5, titled The Icebrood Saga, is the Living World continuation after Season 4 and before End of Dragons. It is included with End of Dragons in the current acquisition model. The season is still episodic content rather than an expansion: its identity is the connected story chapters and the maps, Masteries, activities, and collections delivered through those chapters.
Story order for a first playthrough
Play the Elder Dragon storyline in this sequence:
- Core Guild Wars 2 story. Finish the base campaign before beginning the Living World chronology.
- Living World Season 1. This is the first post-core chapter and is included with the base game.
- Living World Season 2. Its eight episodes set up the Heart of Thorns storyline.
- Heart of Thorns. Play the expansion’s campaign and explore the Heart of Maguuma systems, including gliding.
- Living World Season 3. These six episodes follow the Heart of Thorns aftermath.
- Path of Fire. Its Crystal Desert campaign introduces mounts and the expansion’s other systems.
- Living World Season 4. Continue the post–Path of Fire story before moving to the next saga chapter.
- Living World Season 5, The Icebrood Saga. Finish this season before End of Dragons.
- End of Dragons. This is the next expansion in the listed Elder Dragon sequence.
This order matters because Living World seasons are written as aftermath and bridge chapters. Starting an expansion before its preceding season will not prevent you from playing, but it can reveal characters, conflicts, and world changes before their setup.
Current access and bundle rules from October 13, 2026
ArenaNet changed the entitlement model on October 13, 2026. Living World seasons are no longer available for individual purchase, so the relevant question is which product includes the season you need.

Seasons 1 and 2 are therefore covered by the free base game, while Seasons 3–5 are attached to the expansion purchases shown above. The change removes the old need to buy a missing episode separately, but it also means that an older account’s entitlements should be checked rather than assumed. The product page for the package you are considering is the authority for what your account will receive.
Do you need Living World if you own the expansions?
Yes, if you want the complete story and the content between expansion campaigns. Owning Heart of Thorns gives you that expansion’s maps, gliding, raids, elite specializations, and story, but Season 3 contains the narrative and level-80 activities that follow it. Owning Path of Fire gives you its Crystal Desert package and mounts, while Season 4 supplies the next set of story chapters and associated maps and progression.
No, if your goal is only to play the expansion you bought. An expansion’s own campaign and systems are distinct from the Living World season that follows. You can concentrate on expansion maps, raids, mounts, gliding, or elite specializations without immediately starting every intervening episode.
For a new account, the current bundles make the decision simpler. The base game supplies Seasons 1–2. Buying the Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire bundle supplies Seasons 3–4 with the expansions that precede them. Adding End of Dragons supplies Season 5. The Elder Dragon Saga bundle combines those first three expansions and Seasons 3–5 in one entitlement, which is the cleanest route if you want the complete Elder Dragon sequence through End of Dragons.

You want the whole story from the beginning
Start with the base game, then use the story order above. The most direct current route is the Elder Dragon Saga bundle after the base game, because it combines Heart of Thorns, Path of Fire, End of Dragons, and Seasons 3–5. Seasons 1 and 2 are already part of the base-game entitlement.

You want the lowest package commitment that preserves chronology
Begin with the base game and its free Seasons 1–2. When you reach Heart of Thorns, obtain the Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire bundle; it covers both expansions and the two seasons that follow them. Add End of Dragons later when you are ready for its campaign and Season 5.
You mainly want expansion systems
Choose the expansion whose system matches your immediate objective. Heart of Thorns is the relevant package for gliding, its four Heart of Maguuma maps, three raids, the Mouth of Mordremoth encounter, and its elite specializations. Path of Fire is the package for mounts, five Crystal Desert maps, three raids, and nine elite specializations. Remember that system access does not automatically imply ownership of every earlier expansion or Living World season.
You are returning to an older account
List the expansions and seasons already attached to your account before buying anything. The October 2026 model changed what new bundles contain, but it does not make a single expansion a universal key for all earlier releases. Compare your missing story chapters with the entitlement table, then select the smallest current package that covers the gap.
Prerequisites, progression, and common pitfalls
Level requirements and character readiness
Living World episodes are level-80 content. A new player should complete the core leveling journey before expecting to follow the seasons as intended. Expansion systems such as gliding, mounts, and Masteries are account progression projects rather than one-time story rewards, so plan time for their associated training and collections when moving between chapters.
Confusing maps with story ownership
Seeing a Living World map in the game does not by itself answer whether the account owns its episode access. Story access, map activities, Masteries, achievements, and rewards are tied to the entitlement for that season. Use the product’s stated inclusions and the account’s own unlocks instead of treating every visible map as proof of ownership.
Assuming an expansion includes earlier expansions
That assumption is specifically unsafe. The Janthir Wilds FAQ says it does not include Heart of Thorns, Path of Fire, End of Dragons, or Secrets of the Obscure. Read the full list of included products whenever you buy a later expansion on its own.
Buying by title instead of by coverage
Because individual Living World purchases are no longer offered, compare packages by the total story and system coverage they provide. A product named for one expansion may also include seasons, while another expansion may not include any earlier campaign. The right comparison is the entitlement list, not the age or position of the expansion title.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A simple checklist before you start
- Write down the last story chapter you completed, not just the last expansion you purchased.
- Check whether Seasons 1 and 2 are present through the base-game entitlement.
- Confirm that your Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire purchase includes Seasons 3 and 4 if those are the chapters you need.
- Confirm that End of Dragons includes Season 5, The Icebrood Saga, for the current product version.
- Follow the order: core story, Seasons 1–2, Heart of Thorns, Season 3, Path of Fire, Season 4, Season 5, End of Dragons.
- If you are adding another expansion such as Janthir Wilds, read its inclusion list separately; do not infer ownership of earlier expansions.
The bottom line
Think of expansions as the game’s major system-and-region releases and Living World seasons as the level-80 story, map, and progression chapters that connect them. For the current October 2026 model, the complete route through End of Dragons is base game with Seasons 1–2, the Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire bundle with Seasons 3–4, and End of Dragons with Season 5—or the Elder Dragon Saga bundle, which combines those first three expansions and Seasons 3–5. Buy according to the story chapter and systems you need, and verify the exact entitlement list whenever you add a later expansion.
