Why MySQL Needs at Least 1 GB of RAM on a VPS

MySQL’s 1 GB VPS rule is a practical stability threshold, not a hard minimum. This guide explains the 512 MB startup baseline, buffer-pool sizing, connection memory, and when to move to 2 GB or more.

MySQL does not have a hard 1 GB minimum. Oracle’s current manual says the default configuration is designed to let MySQL start on a virtual machine with approximately 512 MB of RAM. A 1 GB VPS is nevertheless a practical floor because the database, Linux kernel, filesystem cache, connection buffers, and any web application must share the same memory. The difference is between starting successfully and remaining stable when users connect and queries run.

Is 1 GB a real MySQL minimum?

No. It is a planning threshold, not a startup requirement. Oracle’s current 26.7 Reference Manual states: “The default configuration is designed to permit a MySQL server to start on a virtual machine that has approximately 512MB of RAM.” That statement describes the default startup baseline. It does not promise comfortable operation, useful cache capacity, or resistance to memory spikes on a busy VPS.

On a 512 MB machine, the operating system and its services consume part of the allocation before mysqld receives any memory. MySQL then uses global structures, InnoDB’s buffer pool, per-connection buffers, thread stacks, and other allocations. A web server, control panel, mail daemon, monitoring agent, or game-related application competes for the remainder. A process can therefore start on 512 MB and still be killed by the operating system or pushed into heavy paging as soon as concurrent work increases.

A 1 GB plan provides a larger margin for those competing allocations. It is still a constrained environment, so the correct question is not whether MySQL can launch, but whether the database’s working set and peak connection workload fit after every other service has been reserved for.

Where MySQL’s memory goes

InnoDB’s buffer pool

The InnoDB buffer pool is the main cache for table and index pages. Keeping frequently used pages in RAM avoids repeated storage reads and is usually the most important MySQL memory decision. Oracle describes a typical buffer-pool target of 50–75% of system memory in the memory-use guidance, but that range assumes the rest of the machine has also been considered.

The default innodb_buffer_pool_size in MySQL 8.0 is 128 MB, according to Oracle’s InnoDB startup configuration documentation. InnoDB reserves additional memory beyond the configured pool, so the configured number is not a complete accounting of InnoDB’s footprint.

Global allocations

Global buffers are allocated for the server as a whole rather than once for every client. The documented memory accounting includes innodb_buffer_pool_size and key_buffer_size, along with other server structures. Reducing one global setting does not make all connection-related memory disappear, and a small database can still have a large total footprint if its global settings are oversized.

Per-connection and per-thread allocations

Many buffers are associated with a client thread. Sort, read, join, and binlog caches can grow as concurrent queries need them. The potential cost is multiplied by max_connections; a high limit is not reserved free memory, but it permits a high peak allocation when many sessions are active. Oracle’s documented memory formula also includes approximately 2 MB of thread stack per connection in its example. The exact workload determines how much of each buffer is actually used, but the concurrency multiplier makes an apparently modest setting risky on a small VPS.

The operating system and neighboring services

Linux needs memory for the kernel, filesystem cache, SSH access, logging, and routine management tasks. MySQL may also share the VPS with a web stack, application runtime, scheduled jobs, monitoring, or a control panel. These consumers must be reserved before choosing the buffer pool. If the pool occupies nearly all physical RAM, the operating system has little room for file cache or sudden connection activity.

What 512 MB, 1 GB, and 2 GB VPS plans mean

VPS memory What the evidence supports Practical implication
Approximately 512 MB Oracle’s default configuration is designed to let MySQL start at about this size. Suitable only for a very constrained installation with low concurrency and almost no room for other services; startup capability should not be treated as a production capacity guarantee.
1 GB A commonly used small-VPS floor that leaves more headroom than the documented startup baseline. Can suit a low-traffic site with a small working set when the operating system, application stack, and connection limit are deliberately budgeted.
2 GB or more A larger allocation is justified when a web application, control panel, mail service, cache, or growing dataset shares the machine. Provides a wider margin for InnoDB caching and connection bursts, but does not remove the need to size settings and monitor usage.

The 1 GB figure should therefore be read as a risk-management recommendation. A database-only VPS with a tiny working set may run below it, while a busy application server may need more than 1 GB even when the database itself is not large.

How much RAM should MySQL receive on a 1 GB VPS?

Start with total VPS memory, subtract the operating system and every co-located service, and size the buffer pool from what remains. Do not assign a percentage mechanically before making that reservation. The 50–75% range is a typical InnoDB guideline, not permission to give the pool 75% of a shared 1 GB machine while ignoring the application.

As arithmetic, 50–75% of 1 GB is approximately 512–768 MB. That leaves roughly 256–512 MB for Linux, MySQL’s non-pool allocations, and all other processes. In a shared VPS, the usable pool may need to be below the lower end of that arithmetic range. A smaller pool that remains resident is safer than a larger pool that forces paging or triggers an out-of-memory condition.

A repeatable sizing procedure

  1. List every resident service. Include the web server, application runtime, scheduled workers, mail or control-panel processes, monitoring, and any cache. MySQL is not entitled to the entire advertised VPS allocation.
  2. Reserve operating-system headroom. Leave memory for the kernel, SSH, filesystem cache, logs, and short-lived maintenance tasks. The reserve must remain available during normal operation, not only immediately after boot.
  3. Estimate concurrent sessions. Use expected active connections rather than an arbitrary maximum. Inspect the application’s connection pool and traffic pattern, then set max_connections high enough for that workload without allowing an uncontrolled peak.
  4. Choose the buffer pool last. Set innodb_buffer_pool_size from the memory left after the first three steps. Remember that InnoDB uses memory beyond the configured pool and that other global buffers still count.
  5. Review per-thread buffers. Sort, read, join, and binlog caches can expand during concurrent work. Large values combined with a high max_connections can consume the remaining margin even when the buffer pool appears reasonable.
  6. Observe real pressure. Check the VPS provider’s memory and swap graphs during traffic peaks, while imports run, and during scheduled jobs. A setting that looks safe at idle can fail when several sessions perform memory-intensive operations.

What automatic dedicated-server configuration does

MySQL 8.0 includes an automatic dedicated-server calculation described in Oracle’s dedicated-server documentation. For servers with 1–4 GB of detected memory, that calculation uses 50% of detected memory for the InnoDB buffer pool. This behavior is intended for a machine dedicated to MySQL; it is not a guarantee that half of a shared VPS is safe for the database.

If the same VPS runs an application or control panel, automatic detection cannot understand the application’s peak needs. Treat the automatic value as a starting point to inspect, then account for the neighboring services, connection concurrency, and InnoDB’s additional allocations. On a shared 1 GB host, an explicitly smaller pool can be the correct choice.

Can MySQL run on a 512 MB VPS?

Yes, it can start under the default configuration, which is the specific scenario covered by Oracle’s approximately 512 MB statement. Running reliably is a separate question. With so little memory, even a small operating-system footprint leaves limited space for InnoDB caching and per-thread work. A handful of simultaneous queries, an import, or an application-side connection surge can consume the margin.

A 512 MB VPS is most defensible when MySQL is nearly alone, the working set is small, concurrency is tightly capped, and occasional slowdowns or an upgrade are acceptable. It is a poor fit when the same instance hosts a web application, background workers, mail, a control panel, or a dataset expected to grow. Swap can prevent an immediate crash in some situations, but swapping database pages is far slower than keeping the active working set in RAM and should not be used to justify an oversized pool.

How to compare VPS plans for MySQL

Advertised RAM is only the first comparison. Evaluate each plan against the workload that will share it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Total RAM: Compare the actual memory allocation, not storage or CPU labels.
  • Memory after the stack: Determine what remains after the operating system, web server, application runtime, control panel, mail, monitoring, and caches.
  • Concurrent connections: Include normal traffic and bursts; max_connections multiplies exposure to per-thread buffers.
  • Working-set size: A database whose frequently accessed tables and indexes exceed the practical buffer pool will generate more storage I/O.
  • Swap policy: Know whether swap exists and how much latency it introduces. Swap is an emergency cushion, not substitute RAM for a database cache.
  • Storage latency: When pages are not cached, storage response time affects query latency and recovery from memory pressure.
  • Service isolation: A database-only VPS has a different memory budget from a host that also runs the public application and management tools.

Choose a 1 GB plan when the working set is small, traffic is low, and connection limits are conservative. Move to 2 GB or more when the application stack is substantial, the dataset is growing, or normal peaks leave little memory headroom. A neutral upgrade to a VPS with more RAM is often safer than repeatedly shrinking caches and buffers around an already crowded machine.

Symptoms that the allocation is too small

Paging and rising latency

If active database pages are repeatedly evicted and read from storage, query latency can rise even though MySQL remains online. Sustained swap activity indicates that the combined resident set is larger than physical memory and that the buffer pool or neighboring services need review.

Out-of-memory termination

An operating-system out-of-memory event can terminate mysqld or another process when concurrent allocations exceed available RAM. A low idle footprint does not rule this out; per-thread buffers and connection stacks are driven by peak activity.

Failed bursts and refused connections

Applications may see connection failures or timeouts when the server reaches its configured connection limit or cannot allocate memory for another session. Increasing max_connections without reserving memory increases this risk rather than fixing it.

Cache misses after an oversized reduction

Reducing the buffer pool can preserve stability but increase storage reads if the working set no longer fits. The objective is a pool that stays resident while leaving enough memory for the rest of the machine, not the largest possible cache number.

A practical decision rule

Use 512 MB only when you intentionally accept a highly constrained, low-concurrency deployment. Treat 1 GB as the smallest broadly practical VPS tier for a small MySQL-backed service, and budget its memory explicitly rather than assigning the whole amount to InnoDB. Select 2 GB or more when MySQL shares the host with a meaningful application stack, when connections are numerous, or when the working set is expanding. The right setting is the largest buffer pool that remains resident under peak workload after the operating system, MySQL’s global and per-thread allocations, and every neighboring service have been accounted for.
