Most hakuX problems on Android can be narrowed down by separating three variables: which hakuX build you installed, which game image you are loading, and whether the fault is caused by the Android audio or graphics stack. Start with the current official release, hakuX 1.2.0, or identify the separately maintained jreinach-alt fork, whose latest listed release is 0.5.2. Then verify a readable ISO/XISO dumped from a disc you own, reproduce the problem after one change at a time, and record the device, GPU driver and exact failure point. The steps below cover stutter, crashes, missing sound and misleading compatibility ratings without treating a driver switch or update as a guaranteed cure.
Which hakuX build is installed?
Do not mix instructions, version numbers or compatibility claims between the official project and the community fork. The official rfandango release list marks 1.2.0 as latest as of October 30, 2026. The separately maintained jreinach-alt release list marks 0.5.2 as latest. Check the app’s About screen or the package you installed, then use the matching release notes.

The official project runs original Xbox games on arm64 Android with Vulkan. Its current README says you need an ISO or XISO image dumped from a disc you own; separate BIOS, MCPX ROM and hard-disk images are not required for this current build. The project README states, “hakuX is free, and always will be.” See the official README and official releases.
jreinach-alt community fork 0.5.2
The fork has its own release notes, requirements and test matrix. Its Android 13 and ARMv8.2 requirement belongs to the fork’s 0.5.2 notes; do not silently apply it to official 1.2.0. Likewise, the fork’s Turnip package and compatibility ratings are not official 1.2.0 results.

What should be checked before changing a setting?
Use this short baseline first. It prevents a bad dump, a muted phone or a mismatched build from being mistaken for an emulator defect.
- Write down the build. Record official 1.2.0 or fork 0.5.2, the Android version, phone or handheld model, GPU, selected driver, game title and the scene where the fault occurs.
- Confirm the image. Use your own readable Xbox ISO/XISO and keep it in a location hakuX can access. Official 1.0.0 added a reason when a file is unreadable, is not an Xbox disc or contains a program that cannot be loaded, so read that exact message instead of guessing.
- Reproduce once without changing anything. Note whether the failure happens at boot, during a loading screen, in one room or after a period of play. For audio, note whether every Android app is silent or only this game.
- Change one variable. Update, change a driver or alter an Android audio condition separately. A result is useful only when you can identify what changed.

Why does my hakuX game stutter?
Stutter can come from an older pipeline-cache design, a GPU driver interaction or a title-specific rendering path. Official release notes describe fixes, but they do not promise a particular frame rate for every game or phone.
1. Update before comparing performance
Official 1.0.0 replaced a shared pipeline cache with per-game caches. Its release notes attribute intermittent picture freezes of roughly 0.2 to 0.8 seconds to the former shared cache. Official 1.2.0 later reports fewer stutters with Turnip because frames no longer wait for the CPU at the point described in those notes. These are release-author observations, not an independent benchmark. Install the current official build if you are on an older official version, then repeat the same scene.
2. Reproduce a fixed scene
Use a repeatable location: a menu transition, a room entrance or the first minute after loading. Record whether the pause is a one-time first-play hitch, repeats whenever an effect appears or continues constantly. Do not turn a single first-run pause into a claim about the whole game.
3. Compare drivers only when the device supports it
Official 1.1.0 places system-driver selection and stored GPU-driver packages under Settings → GPU driver. On an Adreno device, compare the system driver with one appropriately sourced compatible stored package, one at a time. Turnip is an Adreno-specific avenue; support beyond Adreno is described as experimental, so a Turnip recommendation is not a blanket instruction for Mali, Xclipse or PowerVR hardware.
After each change, launch the same game image and scene. Keep the driver that gives the more consistent result for that title, but do not assume a different phone or a fork’s exact driver build will behave the same way.

Why does a game crash when it starts or loads a room?
Read the actual error first. A launch failure caused by an unreadable or wrong-format image requires a valid dump, not a graphics tweak; a crash after the title has started may be a game-specific compatibility problem.
When the game fails immediately
- Open the error text and capture its wording. Official 1.0.0 says hakuX now reports a reason when a file cannot be read, is not an Xbox disc or has no unloadable program.
- Check that the image is your own Xbox ISO/XISO and that the file has not been truncated or moved to a location the app cannot read.
- Try that same image again without changing the GPU driver. If the error identifies the file, fix the image or its access rather than deleting app data.
Do not download copyrighted system images or treat a replacement BIOS as a universal requirement: the current official README says separate BIOS, MCPX ROM and hard-disk images are not required.
When the game boots but crashes later
Official 1.2.0 specifically lists fixes involving Doom 3’s main menu, Silent Hill 2 room loading, Splinter Cell: Double Agent at boot and Ultimate Spider-Man shortly after boot. Those entries are examples of addressed regressions, not a general compatibility guarantee. If your title still fails at a different scene, record the exact room, menu or transition and test only a supported driver change after confirming the image.
Avoid uninstalling, clearing app storage, deleting shader caches or replacing files unless a current release note gives a save-safe reason. Those actions can remove useful diagnostic information and may affect local saves.
Why is there no sound even though the game runs?
First separate all-app silence from hakuX-specific audio. Android media volume and output routing can mute a running game even when the emulator is functioning normally.
Rule out Android routing
- With the game running, press the volume controls and raise media volume, not only ring or alarm volume.
- Temporarily disconnect Bluetooth headphones, speakers or a car receiver, then test the device speaker.
- Play another app. If that app is also silent, follow Android audio troubleshooting rather than changing hakuX files. An Android Help Community product expert recommends these volume, Bluetooth and cross-app checks; they isolate routing but do not prove the cause of a hakuX-only failure. When only one game is quiet
Confirm that the game’s own options have not disabled music, effects or voices, then repeat the test on official 1.2.0. Official 1.0.0 identifies AAudio as the output path of its new core and reports audio latency changing from approximately 128 ms to approximately 32 ms. That release figure is not a promise that every silence case will disappear, and there is no current evidence here for installing an alternative audio backend.

When voices stop and the game freezes
Official 1.2.0 notes say games that keep or stop voices during sound-engine updates no longer freeze or play a stopped voice. If the symptom persists, state whether music, effects and speech all stop or only speech, and whether the freeze follows a specific dialogue event. That distinction gives maintainers a reproducible game-specific report.
Should I change the Turnip driver?
Only if the device is an appropriate Adreno target and you can compare one compatible package with the system driver while keeping the game, scene and build constant. Turnip is not a universal Android performance switch.
Open Settings → GPU driver in official hakuX 1.1.0 or newer to see the system driver and stored packages. Keep a note of the exact package name and revert to the previous selection if the game develops new crashes, rendering errors or worse frame pacing. Mali, Xclipse and PowerVR owners should not install an Adreno driver; official notes describe non-Adreno support as experimental.
The fork’s published tests used Turnip Adreno Driver T30 on specific Snapdragon 8 Gen 2/Adreno 740 handhelds. That information can help identify a test context, but it does not establish that T30 is correct for another chipset or for official 1.2.0.
Does this game’s Playable rating apply to my device?
No. A compatibility label is meaningful only with its build, device, driver, test procedure and game scene. The jreinach-alt page, last updated October 18, 2026, reports 97 Playable, 20 running below 30 fps and 11 not playable in its own community-fork test set. Its tests used a Retroid Pocket Nova or AYN Thor, both described there as Android 13 handhelds with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2/Adreno 740 graphics and Turnip Adreno Driver T30.
The fork defines “Playable” with a held gameplay run of at least 10 minutes, a stated play-share and frame-rate threshold, audio checks and hitch checks. The page also says the label does not mean a title is bug-free. Treat those counts as a device-specific fork snapshot, not a percentage for all Android phones and not an official 1.2.0 benchmark. What older advice should not be applied blindly?
The official repository’s older Known Issues page mentions switching to an OpenGL ES renderer, but official 1.0.0 replaced the earlier core. That legacy instruction is historical context, not verified current-menu guidance for official 1.2.0. Similarly, a fork-specific Android 13 or ARMv8.2 requirement must remain attached to that fork’s release notes.
Do not treat a driver change, reinstall or hardware purchase as a guaranteed fix. The evidence supports controlled diagnosis, not a universal remedy.
What information is needed when the problem remains?
Prepare a compact report so another person can reproduce the same branch:
- Official 1.2.0 or jreinach-alt 0.5.2 (or the exact older build).
- Android version, device model and GPU family.
- Selected system or stored GPU driver, including package name if visible.
- Game title, whether the image starts, and the exact menu, room or time at which it fails.
- Whether the symptom is stutter, crash, missing music, missing voices, a full freeze or an input problem.
- Whether other Android apps have sound, and whether Bluetooth was connected.
- What changed after each single update, routing check or driver comparison.
If these checks do not resolve the fault, a game-specific emulator issue or an unsupported title may remain. The available release notes do not establish a universal compatibility percentage, and no driver switch or device purchase can be promised to solve every case.

If the picture and sound continue but buttons do not respond, test the on-screen controls and a second controller before changing graphics or audio settings. Official project notes describe controller mapping, but they do not endorse a particular controller model. A physical Android-compatible controller is optional; it cannot repair a crash, a bad image or an audio-routing fault.
