Play Half-Life 2 first, then Half-Life: Alyx. That is the best route for most newcomers because Half-Life 2 establishes the City 17 resistance story in the order audiences first encountered it, while Alyx revisits that world earlier in the timeline. Alyx is a genuine prequel—it takes place between Half-Life and Half-Life 2—but it is also a VR-only game, so it adds a hardware requirement before you even decide whether the series is for you.
Choose Alyx first only if you already have a compatible PC VR setup and deliberately want chronological order more than release order. Both routes are coherent; they simply optimize for different things: Half-Life 2 first favors context, accessibility and the original reveal of City 17, while Alyx first favors timeline purity and an early look at Alyx Vance’s resistance story.

The timeline runs Half-Life, then Half-Life: Alyx, then Half-Life 2. Valve describes Alyx as being “set between the events of Half-Life and Half-Life 2,” with Alyx Vance and her father Eli mounting an early resistance to the Combine occupation. Half-Life 2 begins after the original game’s Black Mesa incident and the lost Seven Hour War, when Earth is living under that occupation.
That makes Alyx a prequel to Half-Life 2, but not a replacement for it. It expands the period that Half-Life 2 later assumes you understand: the occupied Earth, the resistance, City 17 and the people trying to survive there. Chronology answers “when does this happen?” It does not automatically answer “what should a first-time player experience first?”

Why is Half-Life 2 the safer first game?
Half-Life 2 first gives most newcomers the clearest introduction to the setting and requires no VR equipment. The recommendation is an editorial judgment based on Valve’s chronology and presentation, not a quoted Valve instruction.
It preserves the series’ release-order context
Half-Life 2 was released on November 16, 2004; Half-Life: Alyx followed on March 23, 2020. Playing the earlier release first lets you encounter City 17, the resistance and the occupied-Earth premise as the audience originally did. You then return to an earlier point in that same history with the benefit of knowing where the situation eventually leads.
This matters even if you do not care about nostalgia. A later prequel can deliberately leave some relationships, institutions and dangers partially unexplained because the later game has already established their significance. Experiencing Alyx after Half-Life 2 turns that earlier period into context rather than your first orientation to the universe.
It introduces the world without a hardware gate
Valve’s official Half-Life 2 listing includes Windows, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, macOS, Linux and Android. The exact availability and support experience can vary by platform and current storefront status, but the game is designed around conventional first-person controls.
Half-Life: Alyx, by contrast, is listed on Steam as VR Only and supports SteamVR hardware. Starting with Half-Life 2 lets you learn whether the series’ exploration, physics puzzles and combat appeal to you before you configure a PC VR system. If you later choose Alyx, you can evaluate the VR requirement as a separate decision instead of making it the first one.
It makes the prequel perspective more rewarding
Once you know the broad status quo established by Half-Life 2, Alyx‘s earlier setting carries extra weight. You understand that the resistance is operating under an occupation that has already reshaped everyday life, and you can read the earlier events as part of the struggle that leads into the later game.

That is an interpretive benefit, not a claim that Alyx is confusing on its own. It simply means that the same scene or character introduction can land differently when you already recognize the world it is building toward.

Is Half-Life: Alyx a prequel, and does that mean it should come first?
Yes, Alyx is chronologically earlier, but chronological order is only one valid way to approach the series. Valve places it between Half-Life and Half-Life 2; its earlier date in the story does not erase the advantages of release order.
There are two different questions hidden in “which comes first?”:
- What happens first in-universe? Half-Life: Alyx comes before Half-Life 2.
- What should a new player experience first? For most people, Half-Life 2 is the stronger starting point because it is more accessible and establishes the setting before the prequel expands it.
Prequels often assume that the audience already has some familiarity with the world they are explaining. Alyx is built as a complete campaign, but its dramatic framing can be richer when you know the later game’s baseline. If you prefer to avoid any release-order knowledge and want events arranged by the fictional calendar, playing Alyx first is entirely defensible.
What is different about how the two games play?
Half-Life 2 is a conventional first-person campaign; Alyx is designed around physical VR interaction. The choice affects more than display hardware: it changes movement, puzzle solving, combat and how you manage comfort.
| Decision axis | Half-Life 2 | Half-Life: Alyx |
|---|---|---|
| Story position | Follows the original Half-Life and begins the City 17 resistance chapter. | Set between Half-Life and Half-Life 2. |
| Release date | November 16, 2004. | March 23, 2020. |
| Hardware model | Traditional display and controller or keyboard-and-mouse play on the listed platforms. | Windows PC with SteamVR-compatible VR hardware; Steam lists it as VR Only. |
| Core interaction | Exploration, physics puzzles, driving sections, platforming and conventional first-person combat. | Room-scale or seated VR interaction, environmental puzzles, object manipulation and motion-based combat. |
| Best first choice for | Most newcomers, players without VR and anyone who prefers release order. | Players who prioritize chronology and already have a suitable PC VR setup. |
The table is a decision aid, not a quality ranking. Alyx‘s physical interaction is its defining feature, while Half-Life 2‘s traditional controls make it the lower-friction entry point. A player who dislikes VR movement will have a very different first impression of the series from a player who specifically wants an immersive headset experience.
When does playing Alyx first make sense?
Choose Alyx first when you already meet the VR requirement and consciously prefer chronological order. It is a good route for a narrower group of players, not a mistake.
- You already own a capable PC VR setup. The headset, tracked controllers, PC and SteamVR configuration are not obstacles you still need to solve.
- You care more about in-universe chronology than release history. You want to see the early resistance period before the events that follow it.
- You are especially interested in Alyx Vance’s earlier story. The campaign focuses on Alyx and Eli during the occupation’s earlier phase.
- You accept a prequel’s perspective. Some of the setting’s impact may come from knowing that Half-Life 2 exists later in the timeline.
If those conditions do not describe you, starting with Half-Life 2 avoids the most common sources of friction: buying or configuring VR before you know you want it, and approaching an expansive setting through a later-produced prequel rather than its best-known entry point.

Do you need to play the original Half-Life?
No, you can start with Half-Life 2 or Alyx, but the original game provides useful historical and story context. The recommended two-game route is about the choice between Half-Life 2 and Alyx; it does not require you to finish every earlier release first.
The original Half-Life establishes the Black Mesa incident referenced by Half-Life 2. If you want the complete chronology, play it before Alyx, then continue to Half-Life 2. If you mainly want to begin with the most accessible modern starting point, go straight to Half-Life 2; the game supplies enough immediate context to follow its central conflict without treating the first game as a prerequisite.
Do not turn the question into a completionist test. The purpose of choosing an order is to make the first hours understandable and enjoyable, not to impose homework before you can enter City 17.
What do you need to play Half-Life: Alyx?
You need a Windows PC running SteamVR and compatible VR hardware; Steam lists the game as VR Only. Valve’s listing supports SteamVR hardware, so a conventional monitor-and-gamepad setup is not the intended configuration.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Practical Alyx checklist
- A Windows gaming PC that meets the current requirements shown on the official Steam listing.
- A SteamVR-compatible headset and tracked controllers.
- Enough physical space for the play mode you choose, with a clear area and a safe cable arrangement.
- A Steam installation and the ability to launch SteamVR before starting the game.
- A comfort plan: seated or standing play, smooth or teleport movement where available, and regular breaks if you experience discomfort.
The available data does not establish one universal headset model, GPU, cable standard or room size, so do not treat an old hardware list as a timeless guarantee. Check the current Steam system requirements and your headset manufacturer’s compatibility information before purchasing equipment. The important order-of-operations point is that Alyx‘s VR requirement should be verified before you select it as your first Half-Life game.
How should a first-time player decide in under a minute?
Use this decision tree:
- Do you have compatible PC VR hardware? If no, play Half-Life 2 first. If yes, continue.
- Do you want release order and the most accessible introduction? If yes, play Half-Life 2 first.
- Do you specifically want chronological order and Alyx’s earlier resistance story? If yes, play Alyx first; otherwise, play Half-Life 2.
This framework deliberately puts hardware before preference. A chronological route that you cannot comfortably run is not useful, and no amount of story enthusiasm changes the fact that Steam labels Alyx VR Only.
What is the recommended play sequence?
For the broadest audience, use Half-Life 2 as the starting point and follow it with Half-Life: Alyx. If you want the full chronology and are willing to add the original game, use Half-Life → Alyx → Half-Life 2.

Route A: release-friendly introduction
- Start Half-Life 2 on a supported conventional platform.
- Finish the campaign so the City 17 resistance, occupation and major relationships are familiar.
- Set up SteamVR-compatible hardware only if you want the VR-specific experience.
- Play Half-Life: Alyx as an earlier chapter that deepens the setting.
This route minimizes prerequisites and gives the prequel maximum contextual value. It is the default recommendation for a friend who has never played either game.
Route B: strict chronological order
- Play the original Half-Life if you want the opening Black Mesa incident in sequence.
- Play Half-Life: Alyx while you have a working SteamVR setup.
- Continue to Half-Life 2 for the later City 17 resistance chapter.
This route is best for players who value the fictional timeline and are already comfortable with VR. It is not “more correct”; it simply prioritizes a different kind of continuity.
Route C: try Half-Life 2 before committing to VR
- Play enough of Half-Life 2 to decide whether its exploration, physics and combat appeal to you.
- Read the current Alyx hardware requirements and confirm SteamVR compatibility.
- Choose Alyx only if you want its physical VR design, not merely because it is newer.
This is the sensible route for players who have access to a gaming PC but do not yet own VR equipment. It separates a game-order decision from a hardware purchase.
What should you expect if you switch from Half-Life 2 to Alyx?
Expect a change in interaction, not a simple sequel-style control upgrade. Half-Life 2 asks you to aim, move and manipulate objects through familiar first-person inputs. Alyx asks you to reach, grab, inspect and solve problems with tracked motion, so the physical space around you and your comfort settings become part of the experience.
Give yourself time to adjust. Aiming with motion controllers, selecting objects from an inventory and moving through a virtual environment can feel different from conventional controls even when the underlying goals—explore, solve a problem, survive a fight—are recognizable. Begin with the comfort options your hardware and the game’s current settings provide, and stop if VR discomfort develops; there is no advantage to forcing a long session.
Conversely, if you play Alyx first, do not expect Half-Life 2 to reproduce its VR interaction. The later game is a traditional first-person campaign. Its strengths are environmental pacing, physics-driven play and the way it presents City 17 through conventional controls, not headset-based manipulation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are the common mistakes in choosing an order?
- Assuming “prequel” means “mandatory first.” Chronology is a valid preference, but release order can provide stronger context for a first playthrough.
- Ignoring the VR-only label. Do not select Alyx first if you cannot run SteamVR-compatible hardware.
- Expecting identical controls. The games share a world and design lineage, but their interaction models are fundamentally different.
- Treating the original game as compulsory homework. It adds context, yet Half-Life 2 remains a practical starting point for newcomers.
- Buying hardware solely to follow a timeline. Confirm that you actually want VR play before making the equipment decision.
Does playing Alyx first spoil Half-Life 2?
It can change the way some reveals and relationships land, even though it is not a direct retelling of Half-Life 2. Because Alyx is set earlier, it gives you information about the occupation and resistance before the later game presents its version of that world. Players who are highly sensitive to release-order surprises may prefer Half-Life 2 first.

That is a spoiler-sensitivity issue, not a reason to declare the chronological route invalid. If you already know the broad premise, want Alyx’s story specifically and have the hardware, beginning with Alyx remains a coherent choice. Avoid detailed plot summaries before either game if preserving discovery matters to you.
Which game should you start with based on your situation?
| Your situation | Start with | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You have never played Half-Life and do not own VR. | Half-Life 2 | It is accessible on conventional platforms and establishes the central setting. |
| You own PC VR and insist on chronological order. | Half-Life: Alyx | It is set earlier and lets you follow the fictional timeline. |
| You are unsure whether you enjoy the series. | Half-Life 2 | You can begin without adding a VR purchase or setup. |
| You care about how players originally encountered the story. | Half-Life 2 | It preserves the 2004-to-2020 release progression. |
| You are primarily interested in Alyx and Eli’s early resistance. | Half-Life: Alyx | It puts that period and those characters at the center, provided you have VR. |
| You want the complete chronology and have time for three games. | Half-Life → Alyx → Half-Life 2 | It follows the documented in-universe sequence. |
Final recommendation
For a first playthrough, start with Half-Life 2 and then play Half-Life: Alyx. It is the most accessible route, preserves the series’ release context and lets the prequel enrich a world you already understand.
Start with Alyx only when you intentionally want chronological order and already have a compatible PC VR setup. The two games are not competing versions of the same story: one is the conventional 2004 entry that establishes City 17’s resistance, and the other is a 2020 VR campaign set earlier in that history.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play Half-Life: Alyx without finishing Half-Life 2?
Yes. The campaigns are separate releases, and Alyx’s earlier setting can be followed on its own. You will simply approach its characters and resistance story without the later context that makes the release-order route more revealing.
Will I miss important story information if I skip the original Half-Life?
You will miss the full Black Mesa introduction, but Half-Life 2 remains a workable entry point for newcomers. The original game is valuable for chronology and background, not a requirement before starting either of the two games in this comparison.
Can I play Half-Life: Alyx on a regular monitor with a gamepad?
Valve lists Alyx as VR Only and supports SteamVR hardware. A standard monitor-and-controller setup is therefore not the intended supported way to play it; verify the current Steam listing before planning a purchase or installation.

Which game is better for someone who gets motion sick in VR?
Half-Life 2 avoids headset-based movement altogether, so it is the safer first choice for someone uncertain about VR comfort. If you later try Alyx, use its available comfort and movement options, begin with short sessions and stop when symptoms appear.
Should I watch a story summary before starting either game?
Usually not. Both games are designed to introduce their immediate situation through play, and a summary can remove discoveries that make the setting memorable. If you need background, a spoiler-light description of the Black Mesa incident and Combine occupation is enough.
