The Half-Life 2 RTX trailer previews a community-made visual overhaul built with NVIDIA RTX Remix: more detailed models, physically based materials, remastered characters and ray-traced lighting. It is not a trailer for a new Valve sequel, and the playable release established by NVIDIA and Steam is a demo—not the complete remaster.

What does the Half-Life 2 RTX trailer show?

The trailer contrasts the familiar world of Half-Life 2 with a rebuilt presentation: surfaces respond to light and reflections, environments have more intricate detail, and ray-traced illumination gives scenes a different look. NVIDIA’s project page describes hand-crafted physically based materials, remastered characters with subsurface scattering, and models with “up to 30 times the polygonal detail.” That figure is NVIDIA’s feature claim, not an independently measured comparison.

NVIDIA’s GeForce trailer was published on March 13, 2025, and its description says the demo would arrive on Steam on March 18. NVIDIA identifies the footage as captured on a GeForce RTX 5090; that tells viewers how the trailer was captured, not what GPU players need.

What does Half-Life 2 RTX change?

This is a community project that uses NVIDIA RTX Remix to rebuild assets and lighting for the original game, rather than a new game developed by Valve. NVIDIA’s launch announcement describes a broad overhaul, including remade textures and models, upgraded levels built in Hammer, and updated weapons, enemies, skyboxes, atmospheric effects, visual effects and audio.

#1 Best Overall
Half Life 2 - Xbox
  • Amazing new graphics with pre-rendered cutscenes that look like they came from the movies
  • More realistic physics - Objects have varied and appropriate mass, density and physical properties
  • Incredibly advanced AI as enemies adapt, plan, improvise, and respond
  • Hordes of new aliens and other enemies, plus a plethora of new guns and weapons

Assets, materials and characters

Remade models and textures provide the extra surface and shape detail shown in the trailer. Physically based materials are designed to respond to lighting in a more realistic way, while subsurface scattering changes how light appears to pass through character surfaces. NVIDIA describes these as project features; they should not be read as independent performance or image-quality measurements.

Lighting and the RTX Remix runtime

RTX Remix is the modding toolkit and runtime behind the project. NVIDIA says the runtime replaces the original renderer with a Vulkan renderer and substitutes remastered assets and lighting during playback. The original game remains the starting point, while the rendering and content layered over it produce the updated presentation. NVIDIA describes the trailer and demo as featuring full ray tracing, alongside DLSS 4 and Multi Frame Generation.

Which parts of the game are playable in the demo?

NVIDIA’s announcement identifies Ravenholm and Nova Prospekt as the demo’s featured areas. Steam lists Half-Life 2 RTX Demo as free DLC for owners of Half-Life 2. These sources establish a playable demo, not the release of the complete remaster. Check the Steam listing for current availability and ownership details.

What GPU do you need for Half-Life 2 RTX?

The available sources do not establish a specific minimum or recommended GPU for playing this demo. NVIDIA says creating mods with RTX Remix requires a GeForce RTX GPU; for playing Remix-built mods, it describes compatibility with hardware capable of running Vulkan ray-traced games. Those are not the same requirement, and neither statement supplies a verified model-by-model specification for this demo.

  • Battle online with Half-Life 2: Deathmatch – included for no additional charge.

In particular, the GeForce RTX 5090 named in the trailer description is the capture GPU, not a stated minimum or recommendation. NVIDIA’s RTX Remix release notes also describe later platform capabilities, including path-traced particles. They report a 15% performance improvement from Neural Radiance Cache in Half-Life 2 RTX; this is NVIDIA’s platform claim, not an independent benchmark, and applies in the context of the Remix version discussed in those notes.
