There is no confirmed Half-Life 3 announcement or release date. The claim that the game was playable from beginning to end came from gaming commentator Tyler McVicker in May 2025—not from Valve—and his suggested announcement and release windows were speculation. Later reports have not established a Valve schedule.
Is Half-Life 3 playable?
In May 2025, Tyler McVicker said the project he called “HLX” was playable from start to finish and had been playtested widely. VGC quoted him saying, “This is the furthest it’s ever been,” and, “The game is playable end-to-end, period.” Those are McVicker’s claims as reported by VGC; they are not confirmation from Valve.

Engadget also reported the claim as a rumor and noted that Valve had not officially confirmed a follow-up game. “Playable end-to-end” describes what McVicker said about the project’s reported state; it does not establish that the game was finished, ready to ship, or even officially identified as Half-Life 3 by Valve. Engadget’s May 3, 2025 report attributed the claim to McVicker.
Was Half-Life 3 expected to be announced in 2025?
McVicker speculated that an announcement could come in summer 2025 and a release in winter 2025. VGC explicitly characterized that timing as guesswork, not a Valve schedule. The predicted window passed without the reported announcement and release.

A separate report from December 2025 does not confirm that Half-Life 3 was the game in question. VICE said journalist Mike Straw had heard from an unnamed source that an unnamed Valve game was expected to be announced in 2025 and released in spring 2026. Straw said he could not get two other people to verify the date, and he did not identify the game as Half-Life 3. VICE’s report therefore cannot establish a Half-Life 3 announcement or launch window.
Is Half-Life 3 coming out in 2026?
The reports covered here do not establish a 2026 release date. In July 2026, ComicBook.com reported a newer McVicker claim that the project was near completion, but he did not commit to an announcement or release date. The outlet also noted that a similar report in 2025 had not produced the predicted outcome. A claim about progress, even if accurately attributed, is not a confirmed release plan.

Is Half-Life 3 a Steam Machine launch game?
No confirmed information in these reports identifies Half-Life 3 as a Steam Machine launch game. ComicBook.com said the earlier rumor that it would launch with the Steam Machine had not happened. As of the latest reports cited here, none provides a Valve confirmation of Half-Life 3, an announcement date, or a release date. McVicker’s statements, Straw’s unnamed source, and reporting about a possible Valve game should remain attributed to those sources rather than presented as official news.

McVicker also reportedly said the project would not be a VR game like Half-Life: Alyx. That, too, is an attributed claim rather than official platform information, as reported by VGC.

How to judge the next Half-Life 3 claim
- Check who is speaking. A direct Valve announcement is different from a claim by a commentator, journalist, or unnamed source.
- Separate progress from a date. “Playable” or “near completion” does not by itself establish that a game is finished or scheduled.
- Look for a specific, attributable confirmation. A prediction or rumor should not be treated as a release plan unless Valve confirms it.
- Check whether an old prediction came true. The 2025 announcement and release windows reported from McVicker did not materialize as predicted.
