It brings Episode One and Episode Two into the game’s main menu, adds developer commentary and Steam Workshop support, and makes a wide range of visual, interface, and controller changes. The accompanying free-to-own offer ended on November 18, 2024; Valve’s announcement does not establish the game’s current Steam price.
What did the Half-Life 2 20th Anniversary Update add?
The update was released on November 15, 2024, ahead of the game’s twentieth anniversary on November 16. Valve described its changes in the official anniversary announcement.

Episode One, Episode Two, and Lost Coast
Episode One and Episode Two are accessible from Half-Life 2’s main menu. Completing one advances the player to the next expansion. Half-Life 2: Lost Coast is now available from the Extras menu.
Developer commentary
Valve added three and a half hours of behind-the-scenes commentary recorded by members of the Half-Life 2 team. The commentary offers an additional way to revisit the game alongside its campaign.

Steam Workshop support
Workshop access is integrated into the game, letting players browse, install, and play community-created content. Valve’s examples include campaigns and replacements for weapons, enemies, and the user interface.
Graphics and rendering
The update includes rendering and visual changes such as bicubic lightmap filtering, radial fog support, options for classic effects, and revised Crossbow and RPG models for ultrawide displays. Valve also listed extensive lighting and map fixes. Its announcement says antialiasing is set to 4x MSAA by default.

Interface and controller options
New options include UI scaling, a gamepad settings menu, and controller aim-assist settings. Valve also added a gamepad-friendly interface for Steam Big Picture mode.
Documentary and archived development material
Valve said it commissioned Secret Tape to create a documentary focused on Half-Life 2. The update announcement also points to archived development presentations from E3 2002, E3 2003, and Siggraph 2000.

Is Half-Life 2 free on Steam right now?
The free-to-own offer in Valve’s November 15, 2024 announcement was temporary. Valve said players could claim the game for free through November 18, 2024, at 10 a.m. Pacific. That promotion has expired, and the announcement does not confirm the current Steam price or any newer offer.
Can you use the old version if a mod has problems?
Valve says the pre-anniversary version is archived on the public steam_legacy beta branch. It may be useful if a mod or feature behaves unexpectedly with the updated build. Valve’s news feed also records follow-up maintenance after launch, including a February 11, 2025 notice about a Linux launch-crash fix and localization updates; the feed’s later status is not established here. What about the Raising the Bar book?
In its anniversary announcement, Valve said an expanded second edition of Raising the Bar: The Making of Half-Life 2 was planned for 2025. The announcement described coverage of Half-Life 2’s development, concept art from Episode One and Episode Two, and ideas and experiments for a third episode. It does not establish whether the book is currently available, where it can be purchased, or its price. Details are in Valve’s announcement.
