Yes— the official Steam version of Half-Life: Alyx requires a VR headset. Valve lists it as “VR Only” and says a headset is required to play. You do not need Valve’s Index headset, however: any compatible SteamVR or PC-VR system can work. A Meta Quest 3 is one practical route through Steam Link (wireless) or Meta Link (wired), but it still streams from a capable Windows gaming PC running Steam and SteamVR. The headset is therefore only one part of the purchase decision. Check the computer, connection method and tracked controllers before choosing hardware.
What is Half-Life: Alyx?
Half-Life: Alyx is Valve’s return to the Half-Life series built specifically for virtual reality. The official Steam listing describes it as a first-person VR game with SteamVR support, and it includes Source 2 tools for community-created levels. Its design assumes that you look around, reach into the world and use tracked VR input rather than play through a conventional monitor, mouse and keyboard.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThat focus affects every part of the setup. You need a headset that can present SteamVR content, controllers or hand-tracking hardware that can provide tracked input, and a computer able to render the game. Buying a headset without checking the PC is the most common way to end up with an incomplete setup.
Do you need a VR headset to play Half-Life: Alyx?
Yes, if you mean Valve’s officially supported release. Steam’s listing states, “This game requires a VR headset in order to play,” and labels the title “VR Only.” The supported version is not advertised as a flat-screen game, so a normal monitor, keyboard and mouse are not an official substitute for VR hardware.

That requirement is different from saying that one particular headset is mandatory. SteamVR is the software platform the game targets; the headset can come from several manufacturers as long as the complete system is compatible. Community projects that attempt to provide non-VR play are separate from Valve’s release and should not be treated as an equivalent, officially supported mode. Their current completeness and compatibility are not established here.
Do you need a Valve Index?
No. A Valve Index is an option, not a requirement. Valve’s Alyx information says the game runs on SteamVR systems, and Valve describes Steam as hardware agnostic rather than restricted to its own headset brand. The important question is whether your headset has a documented SteamVR or PC-VR path, not whether it carries the Valve logo.
This gives you flexibility when choosing equipment. A compatible headset from another manufacturer can be used if its software exposes it to SteamVR and its controllers provide the tracked input that Alyx expects. The available data does not establish a comfort, display-quality or controller-precision winner among headsets, so those purchase factors should be treated as personal preferences rather than proven rankings.
Can a Meta Quest 3 play Half-Life: Alyx?
Yes, through a computer; it does not run the PC game natively on the standalone headset. Meta’s Steam Link listing supports Quest 2, Quest 3 and Quest Pro, and describes streaming games from a computer’s Steam library to a Quest headset. The computer must have Steam and SteamVR. Meta’s Link documentation also identifies Quest 3 as compatible with a wired PC connection and says Link makes the headset behave as a PC VR headset.
In practice, that gives Quest 3 owners two official connection paths:

| Quest path | How it works | What remains required |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Link | Wireless streaming from the computer’s Steam library to the headset. | A capable gaming PC with Steam and SteamVR, plus a supported Quest headset. |
| Meta Link | A wired USB-C data connection that presents Quest 3 as a PC VR headset. | A capable gaming PC, Steam, SteamVR and a suitable data cable. |
The Quest 3 is therefore a reasonable product path for Alyx when you already have, or plan to buy, a PC that meets the game’s requirements. The headset itself does not remove the need for Windows PC rendering, Steam or SteamVR.
What PC specs do you need?
Steam’s current listing gives these minimum requirements, verified in 2026:
| Component or software | Minimum listed requirement | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Memory | 12 GB RAM | The game and VR software must share system memory while the computer renders the scene. |
| Graphics card | NVIDIA GTX 1060 or AMD RX 580, with 6 GB VRAM | The GPU renders the stereoscopic VR view and must meet the game’s stated graphics baseline. |
| Processor and operating system | 64-bit processor and 64-bit operating system | These are part of Steam’s listed system requirements. |
| VR software | SteamVR support | The game is delivered as a SteamVR title rather than a standard flat-screen application. |
Meeting a minimum specification does not guarantee identical performance in every scene. Steam Support warns that complex VR gameplay can keep a powerful CPU and GPU busy and recommends reviewing Alyx’s advanced performance options. If your computer is below the listed memory or graphics baseline, changing headsets will not fix the underlying rendering limitation.
Before buying hardware, verify the exact graphics-card model and its VRAM, confirm that the operating system is 64-bit, and leave enough headroom for SteamVR and the headset connection software. The headset is an output and input device; the computer still performs the game’s rendering work.
How do you set up Alyx with a PC-VR headset?
You need the game in a Steam library, a compatible VR headset and controllers, SteamVR on the computer, and a PC that meets Steam’s requirements. The sequence below covers the supported setup without assuming a particular headset brand.

- Check the computer first. Confirm the 12 GB RAM, GTX 1060/RX 580-class 6 GB graphics requirement, 64-bit processor and operating system, and SteamVR support listed by Steam.
- Install Steam and the game. Sign in to Steam on the gaming PC and install Half-Life: Alyx to that library.
- Install SteamVR. SteamVR is the runtime that connects the game to a compatible PC-VR headset and its tracked controllers.
- Connect the headset using its supported PC method. Use the headset maker’s documented wired or wireless route. For Quest devices, this means either Steam Link or Meta Link.
- Confirm tracking and controllers. Alyx is designed around tracked VR interaction, so the headset should be recognized and the controllers or supported hand-tracking system should be available before launching.
- Launch from the VR environment. Start SteamVR, then launch Alyx from the Steam library. If performance is inconsistent, use the game’s advanced performance options as recommended by Steam Support.
Is Steam Link or a cable better for Quest 3?
Neither route is universally better; the choice is between wireless convenience and a wired PC-VR connection. Meta documents Steam Link as a wireless streaming option and Meta Link as a USB-C data connection.
Choose Steam Link when you want a wireless route
Steam Link sends the game from the computer’s Steam library to a supported Quest headset without a headset cable. It keeps the computer, Steam and SteamVR in the setup, because the headset is receiving a PC-VR stream rather than running Alyx independently.
Choose Meta Link when you prefer a wired route
Meta Link uses a USB-C data cable and makes Quest 3 function as a PC VR headset. The cable is an accessory for this particular connection method, not a universal requirement for every Quest owner. A charging-only cable is not the same thing as the documented USB-C data connection.
Whichever path you choose, the PC requirements and SteamVR requirement remain unchanged. A different connection method cannot compensate for insufficient RAM, graphics hardware or operating-system support.

- PC-VR compatibility: Look for a documented SteamVR path or an official PC-VR mode. This is the basic compatibility test.
- Connection method: Decide whether you want wireless Steam Link, a wired Meta Link connection, or another manufacturer’s supported PC connection.
- Tracking and controllers: Alyx depends on tracked VR interaction. Quest 3, for example, is identified by Meta as using head and hand tracking with Touch controllers.
- Computer demands: The headset does not replace the gaming PC. Confirm the computer against Steam’s memory, graphics, processor, operating-system and SteamVR requirements.
- Comfort and display preferences: Fit, lens characteristics and image preferences can influence a purchase, but the available evidence does not provide hands-on comfort or image-quality rankings.
These criteria also explain why “cheapest headset” is an incomplete buying question. A lower-cost device that lacks a supported PC-VR path, or a headset paired with an underpowered computer, will not provide the official Alyx setup.
Can you play Alyx without VR?
Not through Valve’s official supported version. Steam marks the game as VR Only and explicitly requires a VR headset. A monitor-and-keyboard mode is not listed by Valve, so non-VR play would depend on unofficial community modifications rather than the released game’s supported controls and presentation.
Those modifications should be evaluated separately from the Steam version. Their current compatibility, completeness and support status are not established, and they should not be presented as a guaranteed way to play Alyx without VR hardware.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhat if the headset connects but Alyx does not run well?
Start with the requirements and software path instead of replacing the headset immediately. Work through this checklist:
- Confirm SteamVR is installed and running on the same computer as the Steam game.
- Verify that the graphics card has the listed 6 GB of VRAM and that the system has at least 12 GB of RAM.
- Check that the operating system and processor are 64-bit.
- For Quest 3, identify whether you are using Steam Link or Meta Link; a cable is relevant only to the wired Link route.
- Make sure the headset and tracked controllers are recognized before launching the game.
- If demanding scenes cause performance problems, review Alyx’s advanced performance options as Steam Support recommends.
If the computer fails the listed baseline, the reliable remedy is a more capable PC rather than a different headset. If the baseline is met but the headset is not detected, verify the headset maker’s PC-VR connection software and the SteamVR connection before changing hardware.

How we picked the setup guidance
The recommendations above follow Valve’s official Steam and Alyx information, Steam Support’s performance guidance, and Meta’s documented Steam Link and Link compatibility. The criteria are official PC-VR support, a documented connection route, tracked input, the computer requirements and clearly stated limits on what the evidence establishes. No headset is ranked for comfort, display quality or performance because those qualities are not supported by hands-on testing here.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Steam Link replace the gaming PC for Alyx?
No. Steam Link streams a game from a computer’s Steam library, so the computer still needs Steam, SteamVR and hardware that meets the game’s requirements. Quest 3 is acting as the PC-VR display and input device in this arrangement.
Recommended Free Tools
Which Quest headsets does Meta list for Steam Link?
Meta’s Steam Link listing names Meta Quest 2, Quest 3 and Quest Pro as supported headsets. That compatibility describes streaming from a computer; it does not indicate that Alyx is installed and rendered natively on those standalone devices.
Is a USB-C cable included in every Alyx setup?
No. A USB-C data cable applies to the wired Meta Link route. Steam Link provides a wireless Quest path, while other PC-VR headsets may use their own documented wired or wireless connection method.
Should you upgrade the PC or buy the headset first?
Check the computer first, because Alyx still requires its Steam-listed memory, graphics, 64-bit system and SteamVR baseline regardless of headset choice. If the PC cannot meet that baseline, a new headset alone will not make the official version playable.
