Valve’s October 26, 2026 patch adds desktop foveated rendering to Half-Life: Alyx—more than six years after the game launched on March 23, 2020. The new Advanced Performance option can reduce GPU workload by rendering the area under your gaze at higher detail and lowering detail in peripheral vision. Valve supports the feature on DirectX systems with NVIDIA GTX 16XX-series-or-newer and RTX 20-series-or-newer GPUs; AMD users are directed to launch the game with -vulkan. Valve recommends enabling headset eye tracking for the best result, but it publishes no FPS or percentage improvement.
What did the October 2026 Half-Life: Alyx patch add?
The October 26 update introduces Foveated Rendering on desktop under the game’s Advanced Performance settings. Foveated rendering concentrates rendering quality where the player is looking and reduces quality outside that area, potentially freeing GPU resources for higher performance or steadier frame delivery.

Why is this being described as six years late?
Half-Life: Alyx released on March 23, 2020. The desktop setting arrived on October 26, 2026, so the feature appeared more than six years after launch. The delay is especially notable because eye-tracked foveated rendering has been discussed as a way to reduce the heavy GPU demands of high-resolution PC VR.

How does foveated rendering work in Alyx?
With compatible eye tracking, the game follows the player’s gaze and renders the central field of view at higher detail than the periphery. Human vision is less sensitive to detail away from the fixation point, so reducing peripheral rendering can lower GPU work while preserving apparent sharpness where the player is looking.
Valve recommends turning on headset eye tracking for the best result. The October note does not provide a supported-headset list, a guaranteed visual-quality threshold, or a measured performance increase. Treat any FPS gain as hardware- and headset-dependent rather than as a published specification.

Rendering is not the same as streaming
Foveated rendering changes how the game is rendered on the device running it. Foveated streaming reduces wireless bandwidth by allocating the highest-detail video stream around the viewer’s gaze. They can be used in different parts of a VR setup and should not be treated as interchangeable features.
Which desktop GPUs and APIs are supported?
| Desktop path | Valve’s stated requirement | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA DirectX | GTX 16XX-series or newer, or RTX 20-series or newer | Enable desktop foveated rendering in Advanced Performance. |
| AMD | Valve specifies an AMD Vulkan path rather than a complete model matrix | Launch Half-Life: Alyx with -vulkan, then check the performance settings. |
Valve does not state that every headset with eye tracking will work, nor does it publish a complete compatibility matrix for Quest, PS VR2, or other models. GPU support and headset eye-tracking support are separate requirements: meeting one does not establish the other.

How do I enable the new setting?
- Update Half-Life: Alyx through Steam so the October 26, 2026 build is installed.
- Open the game’s video or performance options and locate Advanced Performance.
- Turn on Foveated Rendering on desktop.
- If you use an AMD GPU, add
-vulkanto the game’s launch options before starting Alyx. - Enable eye tracking in the headset or SteamVR software when available, then check for edge artifacts, blur during rapid eye movements, or tracking loss.
The exact visual result depends on gaze-tracking accuracy, headset resolution, render scale, and the GPU’s available headroom. If the image becomes distracting, disable the option or reduce other performance settings instead of assuming the feature is malfunctioning.
Does the patch improve FPS?
It may improve rendering headroom, but Valve’s October patch note gives no FPS increase, frame-time reduction, or percentage benchmark. A numerical uplift cannot be stated from the official announcement. The practical benefit is most likely to appear as steadier frame delivery or room for a higher render scale on systems that are GPU-limited.

What changed for standalone Half-Life: Alyx on Steam Frame?
A September 14, 2026 update added standalone Alyx gameplay on Valve’s Steam Frame. Valve lists major rendering and performance optimizations, an ARM64/aarch64 port, foveated rendering for standalone play, and depth reprojection intended to make play smoother at lower frame rates. That update also addressed Linux, launch, cloud-save, subtitle, menu-flicker, interaction, latency, and GPU-warning issues.
| Characteristic | Desktop Alyx | Standalone Steam Frame Alyx |
|---|---|---|
| Compute device | PC GPU; NVIDIA DirectX support starts at GTX 16XX/RTX 20XX families, with AMD Vulkan guidance | Steam Frame’s Snapdragon-based standalone hardware |
| Foveation | New desktop foveated-rendering option; eye tracking recommended | Native foveated rendering for standalone play |
| API/software work | Existing PC VR path | ARM64/aarch64 port plus more than one year of Vulkan-driver and SteamVR work, according to Valve as reported by Road to VR |
| PC connection | Runs through the normal PC VR connection | Can run natively; PC streaming uses Steam Frame’s included 6 GHz wireless adapter, as reported by PC Gamer |
Road to VR reports that Steam Frame has 16GB of VRAM. Valve also said it avoided changing Alyx’s assets for the native port, which should allow existing Workshop content to carry over. Valve described much of the work as platform-level rather than Alyx-specific: “The vast majority of that work was not HL:A specific, so it benefits every other game that runs on Steam Frame.”

Does this mean Alyx now runs standalone on Quest or PS VR2?
No. The documented standalone release is for Steam Frame. The desktop patch’s GPU and API notes do not establish native support for Quest, PS VR2, or another headset, and Valve has not published a universal headset-compatibility table in the cited update.
What should players check before turning it on?
- GPU path: Confirm that an NVIDIA system meets the stated GTX 16XX/RTX 20XX-or-newer guidance, or use Vulkan on AMD as Valve directs.
- Eye tracking: Verify that the headset and runtime expose working gaze tracking; otherwise the intended quality allocation may not be available.
- Artifacts: Watch for peripheral shimmer, visible resolution changes, or blur when your gaze moves quickly.
- Workshop stability: Update the game first, since the patch also addresses Workshop-related rendering crashes.
- Performance expectations: Do not assume a fixed FPS gain; Valve provides no benchmark figure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can foveated rendering work without eye tracking in Half-Life: Alyx?
Valve recommends eye tracking, but the October note does not define a complete fallback mode or promise equivalent benefits without it. If your headset lacks reliable gaze tracking, test the visual result cautiously and disable the option if peripheral artifacts are distracting.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What launch option do AMD players need for Alyx’s desktop foveated rendering?
Valve’s guidance is to launch the game with -vulkan. The note does not publish a full AMD GPU-by-GPU compatibility list, so Vulkan driver support remains an important variable.
Is Steam Frame the only native standalone way to play Half-Life: Alyx?
The cited September 2026 announcement documents native standalone Alyx support on Steam Frame. It does not announce native standalone builds for Quest, PS VR2, or other headsets.
Will Workshop campaigns work on the Steam Frame version?
Valve avoided changing Alyx’s assets for the native port, and Road to VR reports that existing Workshop content should carry over. Individual add-ons can still have their own compatibility issues.
