Half-Life: Alyx is a strongly praised, VR-first return to City 17 that tells a meaningful story between Half-Life and Half-Life 2. Its hands-on interaction and tense atmosphere are major strengths; its slower pace, horror elements and requirement for a compatible PC-and-VR setup make it a less straightforward recommendation for players who want a conventional, non-VR shooter.
Is Half-Life: Alyx worth it?
If you have access to compatible VR hardware and enjoy immersive exploration, deliberate combat and a more unsettling tone, the reviews make a strong case for playing it. Valve describes the game as built from the ground up for VR, and its design leans on physically handling objects, searching spaces, solving spatial puzzles and aiming around cover—not simply viewing a standard shooter through a headset. Valve’s official game page and the Steam listing describe those VR features.
The critical praise is substantial but should be read as attributed opinion, not as a universal consensus score. Christopher Livingston gave it 92/100 in a PC Gamer review published March 23, 2020, praising the story and the experience of returning to City 17 in VR. TIME’s review also found it gripping and immersive, while emphasizing that it is slower, more methodical and scarier than Half-Life 2.
Steam’s English-language user reviews were labeled “Overwhelmingly Positive” at 98% from 61,672 reviews in the Steam page snapshot accessed October 8, 2026. That is a changing platform rating, not a critic aggregate or a fixed measure of quality. Individual experiences will also depend on VR comfort, hardware and how much the game’s pace and horror appeal to you.

What kind of story is it?
Half-Life: Alyx is set between Half-Life and Half-Life 2. You play as Alyx Vance, alongside her father Eli, as they resist the Combine in City 17. It is a meaningful entry in the series’ story, rather than Half-Life 3: Valve level designer Corey Peters told TIME, “It’s not Half-Life 3,” and described it as “a different game than people are expecting, but it’s a Half-Life game that’s continuing the story in a new way.”
That framing helps set expectations. The game extends the series’ world and narrative, but it does so through a distinct VR experience rather than as a conventional numbered sequel.
What do the reviews praise—and what may not work for you?
Immersion and interaction
The headset perspective is central to the game’s appeal. You search environments, manipulate objects, solve puzzles in physical space and fight from behind cover. Those actions make exploration feel tactile and keep attention on the immediate environment. The experience is designed around VR interaction, not merely adapted to it.
A slower, more frightening pace
TIME characterizes the game as more methodical and scarier than Half-Life 2; PC Gamer also notes its measured pacing and fewer face-to-face character encounters than earlier games. That can give exploration and suspense more room, but players expecting a fast, near-constant run-and-gun rhythm may find it subdued. The horror elements are also a real part of the experience, not just a brief change of scenery.

A strong review score is not a performance guarantee
PC Gamer’s 92/100 was one reviewer’s judgment, based on a specific setup: an Intel Core i7-9700K, 16 GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 with 8 GB VRAM, and an HTC Vive Pro or Valve Index. The review noted some technical issues in its review build. That score and test configuration do not establish how the game will perform on another PC or headset.
Do you need a VR headset, and what works?
Yes. Steam explicitly lists a VR headset as required and identifies SteamVR support. Valve says SteamVR-compatible computer-connected VR hardware can work; no single historical headset is identified as the only option. Check the current Steam product page and your headset’s compatibility details before buying or configuring equipment, since requirements and supported setups can change.
When comparing a SteamVR-compatible VR headset, focus on the practical fit with your PC and play space: tracking, controller design, connection method, comfort and price. Compatibility with SteamVR alone does not guarantee that a particular headset, PC or room setup will suit you.
Published minimum PC requirements
Steam’s listed minimum requirements include Windows 10, 12 GB of RAM, a GTX 1060 or RX 580 with 6 GB of VRAM, and SteamVR. These are the store’s stated minimums, not a promise of a particular frame rate or visual quality; verify the live listing for current requirements before purchase.

How can you adjust movement and play position?
Valve lists seated and standing play, roomscale, and teleport, shift and continuous movement options. These offer different ways to move through the game, but no option guarantees comfort for every player. If you are sensitive to VR motion, consider starting with an option that minimizes continuous movement and adjusting only if it feels comfortable.
How should you interpret completion-time and review figures?
TIME’s reviewer reported finishing in 12 hours, while explicitly noting that other players may take longer. Treat that as one reviewer’s playthrough, not a standard completion-time estimate; exploration, pace and familiarity with VR can change how long a run takes.
Likewise, keep the main figures in their proper categories: PC Gamer’s 92/100 is a named critic’s score from 2020, while Steam’s 98% from 61,672 English reviews is a user-review snapshot accessed October 8, 2026. Neither figure predicts whether the game’s VR requirements, deliberate pacing or horror will suit a particular player.
