For a first playthrough, follow Half-Life → Opposing Force (optional) → Blue Shift (optional) → Decay (optional) → Half-Life 2 → Episode One → Episode Two → Half-Life: Alyx. The four-game flat-screen story is Half-Life → Half-Life 2 → Episode One → Episode Two. Valve places Half-Life: Alyx between the first two games chronologically, but playing it after Episode Two is the better first-playthrough choice because it preserves the original Gordon Freeman arc and release-era progression. Add the three Black Mesa side stories only if you want parallel viewpoints, and remember that Alyx requires a SteamVR-compatible headset.

- Half-Life
- Half-Life: Opposing Force (optional)
- Half-Life: Blue Shift (optional)
- Half-Life: Decay (optional, primarily for players with access to its PlayStation 2 release)
- Half-Life 2
- Half-Life 2: Episode One
- Half-Life 2: Episode Two
- Half-Life: Alyx (recommended after Episode Two for a first playthrough)
You can remove all three optional side stories and still follow the complete central arc. If you do not have a VR setup, stop after Episode Two; the flat-screen sequence remains a coherent story without Alyx.
What is the shortest complete Half-Life story route?
Play Half-Life, Half-Life 2, Episode One, and Episode Two. These are the essential entries in Gordon Freeman’s arc, and they are all playable on a conventional PC display. The side expansions add context and viewpoints around the Black Mesa incident but are not prerequisites for understanding the occupied-City-17 storyline.

1. Half-Life
Begin with the original game, released on November 19, 1998 according to Steam’s listing. It establishes the Black Mesa incident and the series’ central conflict: physicist Gordon Freeman becomes a key figure in humanity’s resistance to an alien invasion. Valve’s current official release also includes the Uplink mini-campaign, but Uplink is bonus content rather than a required chapter.
2. Half-Life 2
After the original, move to Half-Life 2. Valve describes Gordon’s return to an occupied City 17, where he joins Alyx Vance and the human resistance. Valve’s company timeline places its release in 2004.

Half-Life 2: Episode One follows directly from Half-Life 2. Valve’s official series description places Gordon and Alyx in a new threat to City 17, and the company timeline dates the episode to 2006. Do not insert another story between these two episodes.
4. Episode Two
Play Half-Life 2: Episode Two immediately after Episode One. Valve describes the chapter as a continuation in which Gordon and Alyx confront a portal threat affecting Earth’s resistance; the company timeline dates it to 2007.
Should I play Half-Life: Alyx before or after Half-Life 2?
For a first playthrough, play Alyx after Episode Two. For strict in-universe chronology, play it after Half-Life and before Half-Life 2.
Valve’s official description says that Alyx is set between the events of Half-Life and Half-Life 2, with Alyx Vance and her father Eli mounting an early resistance to the Combine’s occupation of Earth. That makes it a chronological prequel, but chronology is not automatically the best introduction. Saving it for last lets you experience the original sequel-and-episodes progression before moving to a later-developed story set earlier in the timeline.
This is a recommended player route, not a Valve-mandated order. Valve confirms the placement in the timeline and identifies Episode One as following Half-Life 2, but it does not require one universal sequence for players.

What are Opposing Force, Blue Shift, and Decay, and are they required?
They are optional Black Mesa-era side stories. Each overlaps the broad incident established in Half-Life from a different perspective, so play them after the original and before Half-Life 2 if you want the fullest set of officially released viewpoints.
Half-Life: Opposing Force
Opposing Force follows the Black Mesa events through the viewpoint of an invading soldier rather than Gordon Freeman. Steam lists its release date as November 1, 1999. It is useful for a parallel perspective, but omitting it does not leave a gap in Gordon’s main storyline.
Half-Life: Blue Shift
Blue Shift returns to Black Mesa through Barney Calhoun, the security guard associated with Gordon Freeman. Steam lists its release date as June 1, 2001. Treat it as another optional expansion, not as a bridge that must be completed before Half-Life 2.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHalf-Life: Decay
Decay is an optional 2001 PlayStation 2 entry. Include it if you want every officially released Black Mesa-era perspective and have access to the relevant platform or a legitimate compatible release. Its console side-entry status means it is not needed to understand Gordon’s progression, and it is reasonable to skip it in a PC-only route.
There is no practical benefit to reconstructing an exact chapter-by-chapter order among these three expansions. They overlap the same broad crisis, and the usable recommendation is to finish them after Half-Life in release order before beginning Half-Life 2.
What is the strict chronological order?
The in-universe sequence is:
- Half-Life
- Opposing Force, Blue Shift, and Decay (optional stories overlapping the Black Mesa incident)
- Half-Life: Alyx
- Half-Life 2
- Half-Life 2: Episode One
- Half-Life 2: Episode Two
The three Black Mesa expansions do not form a clean linear chain with one another; they revisit the same disaster from different characters’ viewpoints. The meaningful chronological placement is that they belong to the first game’s era, while Alyx occurs after that incident and before the occupation shown in Half-Life 2.
Choose this order if timeline purity matters more to you than release history or the original player experience. The major cost is hardware: Alyx is a full-length virtual-reality game, so you must have a compatible PC VR setup at that point in the sequence.

What is the Half-Life release order?
Release order explains why many players prefer to save Alyx for last:
- Half-Life — November 19, 1998, according to Steam.
- Half-Life: Opposing Force — November 1, 1999, according to Steam.
- Half-Life: Blue Shift — June 1, 2001, according to Steam.
- Half-Life 2 — 2004, according to Valve’s company timeline.
- Half-Life 2: Lost Coast — 2005, a technology-demo chapter.
- Half-Life 2: Episode One — 2006, according to Valve’s company timeline.
- Half-Life 2: Episode Two — 2007, according to Valve’s company timeline.
- Half-Life: Alyx — March 23, 2020, according to Valve.
Decay is a 2001 PlayStation 2 release and is usually treated as an optional console entry rather than part of the essential PC release path. If you are documenting every release, place it with the other 2001 Black Mesa-era titles.
How should I choose between the three routes?
Use the route that matches what you value: continuity, chronology, hardware simplicity, or completeness.
| Route | Sequence | Best when | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential flat-screen | Half-Life → Half-Life 2 → Episode One → Episode Two | You want the central story with no optional detours or VR | Misses the parallel Black Mesa viewpoints and Alyx’s prequel story |
| Expanded first playthrough | Half-Life → Opposing Force → Blue Shift → Decay (optional) → Half-Life 2 → Episode One → Episode Two → Alyx | You want broad series coverage while preserving the original main arc | Requires extra time, and Alyx requires SteamVR-compatible hardware |
| Strict chronology | Half-Life → optional Black Mesa stories → Alyx → Half-Life 2 → Episode One → Episode Two | You want events arranged by the fictional timeline | Places the later-developed VR prequel before the classic sequel sequence |
| Release history | Half-Life → Opposing Force → Blue Shift → Half-Life 2 → Lost Coast → Episode One → Episode Two → Alyx | You want to follow how the series reached players | Includes optional technology-demo material and postpones the chronological prequel |
Where do Uplink, Lost Coast, and the multiplayer games fit?
These extras should not interrupt the main story unless you specifically want bonus material.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Uplink
Uplink is a short mini-campaign associated with the original Half-Life. Play it after Half-Life if you want additional material from that era; it is not a prerequisite for any later game.
Lost Coast
Lost Coast is a 2005 Half-Life 2 technology-demo chapter. Its purpose is to showcase rendering technology rather than advance the main narrative, so it can be played after Half-Life 2 as a curiosity or left out entirely.
Deathmatch releases
Half-Life Deathmatch and Half-Life 2: Deathmatch are multiplayer products, not story chapters. They have no place in a narrative play order.

Half-Life: Source
Half-Life: Source is a visual upgrade of the original game, not an additional episode. Count it as your version of the opening game if you choose it, then continue with the same sequence.
Black Mesa
Black Mesa is a third-party remake rather than a separate entry in Valve’s canonical sequence. It can be an alternative way to experience the first game’s premise, but it is not required to answer the official Half-Life play order and should not be inserted as an extra chapter.
What hardware do I need for the full sequence?
The four-game flat-screen route needs no special hardware beyond a compatible gaming PC. The only major hardware fork is Half-Life: Alyx: Valve released it as a full-length virtual-reality game on March 23, 2020, and states that it works with any SteamVR-compatible headset.
- Flat-screen route: play Half-Life, Half-Life 2, Episode One, and Episode Two without VR.
- Expanded route with Alyx: add a PC VR setup and a SteamVR-compatible headset when you reach Alyx.
- PlayStation 2 completion route: add Decay only if you have access to its original platform or a legitimate compatible release.
Do not buy a particular headset model solely because of this series. Valve’s compatibility statement is platform-based, not tied to one required brand.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What mistakes should I avoid when following the order?
- Starting with Alyx because it is the earliest event: chronology is valid, but the recommended first-playthrough route saves it for after Episode Two.
- Treating every expansion as mandatory: Opposing Force, Blue Shift, and Decay enrich the Black Mesa setting but are not prerequisites for Gordon’s main arc.
- Counting Source as another story: it is an alternate visual version of the original game.
- Putting Lost Coast in the critical path: it is a technology demo, not a required continuation.
- Expecting an exact order among the Black Mesa side stories: their events overlap, so a practical release-order grouping is more useful than a chapter-level timeline.
- Assuming multiplayer products advance the plot: the Deathmatch releases are separate multiplayer experiences.
- Skipping the hardware check for Alyx: it is the one major entry in this guide that requires SteamVR-compatible PC VR equipment.
How we picked this order
The recommendation weighs four things: continuity of Gordon Freeman’s essential arc, the distinction between mainline games and parallel expansions, Valve’s published chronology, and hardware requirements. Release dates and story relationships come from Valve’s official series and company materials and Steam listings; the preference to place Alyx after Episode Two is editorial guidance for first-time players, not an official rule.

Is Half-Life: Alyx a remake of the first Half-Life?
No. It is a separate prequel centered on Alyx Vance and Eli during the period between the first two main games. Its chronology explains its setting, but it does not replace the original Black Mesa campaign.
Can I use Half-Life: Source instead of the original Half-Life?
Yes, if you prefer that visual version. Valve describes it as an upgrade of the original rather than a new narrative entry, so completing it occupies the same opening position in your order.

What if I cannot access Half-Life: Decay?
Skip it without affecting the central storyline. Its original 2001 release was for PlayStation 2, and the main Gordon Freeman sequence does not depend on its events.
Do Uplink and Lost Coast change the ending of the main story?
They are supplementary experiences rather than required bridges between mainline games. You can finish the principal sequence without either one and add them later as optional historical or technical curiosities.
