Hall effect and replaceable sticks describe different things: Hall effect is a way to sense stick movement; replaceability is a way to service or change the stick assembly. A controller can have either feature or both. Check the sensor type, exact model compatibility, and replacement process separately—especially because a replaceable module is not automatically a Hall-effect module.
What Hall-effect sticks do
A Hall-effect stick uses magnetic sensing to detect movement. Thrustmaster describes its ESWAP H.E.A.R.T. modules as using magnetic sensors and contrasts them with traditional potentiometers. The company says potentiometers can wear over time, lose precision, and cause drift; that is the manufacturer’s explanation, not an independent durability comparison.

For its ESWAP SH2 and SH5 modules, Thrustmaster claims stick movement can be tracked to within 0.01 degree. This is a manufacturer specification, not a result from an independent test. The product pages also cite 15 years of H.E.A.R.T. expertise in flight simulation, which is background about the manufacturer’s technology, not a measured lifespan for these modules. What replaceable stick modules do
A replaceable module is about serviceability: the owner can swap the stick assembly rather than treating it as permanently built into the controller. PlayStation says of the DualSense Edge module: “If a stick module doesn’t work properly or stops working, you can replace it with a new stick module (sold separately).” Its instructions describe removing the front cover and using a release lever; the left and right modules are interchangeable. The module is for DualSense Edge only. PlayStation support: replacing a stick module · PlayStation DualSense Edge stick module
Those PlayStation pages document replacement and compatibility, but do not identify the module’s sensor technology. Replaceability alone is not evidence that a stick uses Hall-effect sensing.

Some controllers combine both features
Hall-effect sensing and user-swappable modules are not competing categories. Thrustmaster sells Hall-effect SH2 and SH5 modules for compatible ESWAP controllers. The listed compatible models are ESWAP S, X, X2, and XR. That compatibility list is specific to these modules; it does not make them universal upgrades for other controllers. Compare controllers on the details that affect ownership
| What to compare | What to verify | Example from official product information |
|---|---|---|
| Sensor method | Does the manufacturer explicitly identify Hall-effect, TMR, or potentiometer sensing? | Thrustmaster identifies SH2 and SH5 as Hall-effect. PlayStation’s cited DualSense Edge module pages do not state the sensor type. SH2 · SH5 · PlayStation support |
| Replacement process | Can you swap the complete module, or does service require disassembly or soldering? | PlayStation documents a module swap using the front cover and release lever. Thrustmaster describes SH5 replacement as tool-free. PlayStation support · SH5 |
| Compatibility | Does the part fit your exact controller model and revision? | SH2 and SH5 list ESWAP S, X, X2, and XR; the PlayStation replacement module is for DualSense Edge only. SH2 · SH5 · PlayStation module |
| Input tuning | Can you change stick sensitivity, dead zones, or profiles? | PlayStation lists adjustable stick sensitivity and dead zones for DualSense Edge. These settings are separate from the sensor mechanism and whether the module is replaceable. PlayStation DualSense Edge features |
| Parts and price | Is the module available locally, and what is its current price and stock status? | Availability and price depend on region and time. Check the manufacturer’s current listing and authorized local sellers. |
| Repair support | Would a repair need calibration, and who is responsible if the result is unsatisfactory? | A repair provider describes calibration and testing as part of its service; that is one provider’s offering, not a guarantee about repair services generally. Repair-service example |
Use this checklist before buying
- Identify the sensor. Look for an explicit manufacturer statement. Do not infer Hall effect from a module being removable.
- Match the exact controller. Confirm model and revision against the part listing; similar names or a shared platform do not establish fit.
- Understand the swap. Check whether replacement is designed for the owner, whether tools are needed, and whether the part is sold separately.
- Separate tuning from hardware. Sensitivity and dead-zone settings can change how a stick behaves, but they do not reveal its sensor type or make the module replaceable.
- Check the local repair path. Verify stock, regional price, calibration requirements, and warranty or service coverage before committing.
There is no independent head-to-head lifespan or failure-rate comparison in the cited sources. Treat manufacturer claims as product information, not proof that one category lasts longer in every controller.
