Halo Support identifies that setting as a cause of a rare multiplayer crash on Series X|S. It is a targeted workaround, not a confirmed fix for every kind of crash.
First, identify what is crashing
Note whether Halo Infinite alone closes back to the Xbox dashboard or the entire console restarts or shuts down. Also note whether the crash happens in multiplayer, campaign, or both. Those details help distinguish a game-specific problem from a wider console issue; the symptom alone does not establish a cause.
Halo Support’s multiplayer known-issues page, updated November 18, 2025, documents a rare crash during multiplayer matches when raytraced sun shadows are enabled on Xbox Series X|S or PC.
Try the documented multiplayer workaround
- In Halo Infinite, open Settings > Video.
- Find raytraced sun shadows and turn the option off.
- Return to the mode where the crash occurred and see whether the problem recurs.
This setting change addresses the specific multiplayer condition Halo Support describes. If your crash occurs in campaign, or continues with the option off, do not assume this is the cause.

Update Halo Infinite and Xbox
Check for a game update
On Xbox, close Halo Infinite, then open My games & apps > Manage updates > Updates. Select Halo Infinite if an update is listed and confirm the update. To enable automatic game updates, go to Settings > System > Updates > Keep my games & apps up-to-date. Halo Support provides these steps in its Halo Infinite update guide.
Check for a console system update
Check for Xbox system updates before moving on to hardware troubleshooting. Microsoft’s Series X service guide and Series S service guide recommend checking device updates. The guides do not identify a system update as a guaranteed fix for Halo crashes.

Choose support based on what else is affected

Halo Support handles bugs in Halo games and says submitted reports go to the Halo development team. It does not handle hardware, account, purchase, or personal connectivity issues outside a Halo game. If symptoms point to a console hardware problem, use Xbox Support or authorized repair guidance rather than opening the console to try to fix a game crash. Microsoft’s service guides caution that repair requires appropriate skill and tools.

Halo’s December mid-season update notes say a crash related to terrain geometry—described as the top crash for Xbox Series X and Series S after the Season 5 update—was fixed. That is a historical fix, not evidence that the same issue is causing a crash now. The notes describe it qualitatively and do not provide a crash rate.

The known-issues page cited above is dated November 18, 2025. It documents the raytraced-sun-shadows multiplayer condition, but does not establish that this is the only possible cause of crashes on October 8, 2026. Consult Halo Support’s current known-issues and patch-note pages for later changes.
